Il progetto è stato avviato da Adriano Rutz e Pierre-Marie Allard del University of Geneva (Q503473): public research university located in Geneva, Switzerland e a cui si è aggiunto Jonathan Bisson.
L'obiettivo iniziale era quello di costruire un database aperto che raccogliesse i prodotti naturali, le strutture chimiche, gli organismi produttori e un riferimento bibliografico associato che documentasse tali collegamenti. A tal fine, abbiamo raccolto dati tassonomici, chimici e bibliografici da risorse esistenti e li abbiamo standardizzati.
