Introduction

edit

Properties are used to assign statements to items. For example one of the symptoms of dengue fever (Q30953) is headache (Q86). To add this statement the property symptoms and signs (P780) is used. Anybody can suggest new properties in the subsections of Wikidata:Property proposal. Statements are used to centralize infobox information and add additional information to an item.

Property proposal

Overview of a Wikidata statement
  • Properties can link to:
  • Another item
  • String
  • Number
  • Image
  • Properties can be proposed at:
  • Properties need to be reviewed (Ideally 3 supports):
  •   Support
  •   Comment
  •   Oppose
  • Look for properties that are still missing from various infoboxes
  • Propose properties that connect medical items together with meaningful statements. Meaningful statements are more powerful than links, categories, lists, and other static representations of information on Wikipedia. Don't think of answers, but what kind of questions (queries) you would like to answer. E.g.:
  • I want to know all the diseases that have the symptoms: running-nose and fever.
  • That means that diseases have to be linked by a property "has symptoms" to certain systems. Qualifiers can be used to say things like: Frequency = 30 %, if a certain symptom only appears in 30 % of the cases.
  • I want to know all the diseases that are caused by ingesting berries that are endemic to the Galapagos Islands.
  • The biology task force are hopefully already adding plants to geographic places. We can query all the berry-forming plants on the Galapagos Islands that are known to be poisonous.
  • Not only will this allow for extremely powerful queries in the future, but it will also allow us to generate lists, categories, infoboxes, stub-class articles, all automatically. The translation work will be kept to a minimum because the items and statements are already being translated.
  • Another good thing is that most of the work is done by bots. After we agree on a property a request can be made at Wikidata:Bot requests for a bot to gather the information and add sources. Queries can be done by hand or by using certain visually appealing web interfaces (e.g. example)
