The collection emphasizes
The New York University Library manga collection is global in its holdings. It contains over 300 Japanese manga titles, and a growing collection of manga in Russian, Polish, and other Slavic languages, along with other East Asian languages, and some English translations. Many of the Japanese manga are shōjo manga or “girls comics” and were written by female authors who are a part of the Year 24 Group (Q1141868) who practiced in the 1970s (athough the collection is not limited to these authors). In addition to manga, the NYU Manga Collections contain periodicals that published manga or contain critical inquiry into manga, as well as secondary sources in both English and Japanese about shōjo and other manga genres.
It can be found in Wikidata as Q105071992.
Our goal for the Wikidata Project is to highlight New York University Library's collection of manga as represented in books and periodicals produced in Japan and beyond; to document the evolution of the genre as an international phenomenon; to highlight influential women manga artists whose work affected the field in Japan and beyond, and to create a template for others working on manga inclusion in Wikidata.
- create a list of manga in the NYU Library collections for Wikidata editing
- identify genres of manga for inclusion
- Use OpenRefine Reconciliation to identify Q and P numbers for titles and authors when needed
- examine existing manga pages in multiple languages to see what might be missing
- determine language of entry, if there is already a QID, then edit that page. If creating a new page, follow original script, transliteration, and then translation.
- determine consistent terminology for use in descriptions
- identify statements for inclusion in the Wikidata title and author pages
- login to Wikidata and edit existing manga entries and create new ones for those that need it
