Wikidata:WikiProject Stanford Libraries/Describing people

These properties and guidelines are associated with entities represented by personal names.

General properties edit

Labels and sitelinks edit

Label edit

Enter the name by which the person is most widely known, in natural order (i.e., firstname lastname for Western languages). Examples: Annie Lennox, Anna May Wong, Elizabeth II, George Eliot. Do not enter dates or other disambiguating information as part of the label -- include it in the description instead. Neither the label nor the description need to be unique in themselves, but the combination of label and description should be unique. For more information, see Help:Label.

Description edit

Enter a brief description with further identifying information about the individual. A common formula combines the person's main occupation and their country of origin. Example: for Georgette Heyer, the description is "British historical romance and detective fiction novelist". Wikidata guidelines state that the description should be about two to twelve words in length, should not be a complete sentence, should begin with a lower case letter (except for cases where the word is usually capitalized, as "British" is in the example, and should not have ending punctuation. For more information, see Help:Description.

Also known as edit

Enter alternate names for the person, such as the full form of name for someone commonly known by a nickname, or who changed their name at some point. If the name contains diacritics, also enter a value using only ASCII. These alternate labels will be searchable along with the main label. As labels, alternate names are assigned per language. For more information, see Help:Aliases.

Sitelinks edit

Link to a Wikipedia article (or other Wikimedia page) that exactly corresponds to this person. The presence of a sitelink helps ensure the item meets Wikidata's notability standards. For more information, see Help:Sitelinks.
