WikiProject Biodiversity started as WikiProject iNaturalist: iNaturalist (Q16958215) is a citizen science project focused on biodiversity. It has a large community of enthusiasts, of which some are also active in the various Wikimedia communities. This wikiproject aims at improving the cross-pollination between iNaturalist and Wikimedia communities. Wikimedia Commons is an ideal platform to reuse iNaturalist observations, while iNaturalist with its high-grade annotations of observations provides valuable references to Wikidata statements. "Research grade" observations are incorporated into other online databases such as Global Biodiversity Information Facility (Q1531570). iNaturalist supports many Wikimedia-compatible licensing options, including Creative Commons CC0 License (Q6938433), Creative Commons Attribution (Q6905323) and Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (Q6905942). Snippets from Wikipedia are also used on iNaturalist to describe individual taxa.

iNaturalst licensing edit

iNaturalst defaults to non-open licences, both for images and for observation data. To set these to open licences, or make a public domain declaration, see "How to simply modify licenses at iNaturalist".

Commons Templates edit

Commons:Template:Inaturalist can be used with media files to link to an observation on iNaturalist that includes those files. Use {{iNaturalist|1234567}} on the Wikimedia Commons description page to link to https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/1234567.

Commons:Template:Gbif can be used with media files to link to an occurrence on GBIF that includes those files. Use {{Gbif|1234567}} on the Wikimedia Commons description page to link to https://www.gbif.org/occurrence/1234567.

Wiki loves iNaturalist! edit

Wiki loves iNaturalist! helps you find articles of species on Wikipedia and Wikidata that lack images and find appropriately licensed images in iNaturalist to use in Wikipedia articles. Note that you need the upload_by_url user right to import the images directly to Commons.

iNaturalist2Commons edit

iNaturalist2Commons is a user script that lets you import free-license images from iNaturalist to Commons. Note that you need the upload_by_url user right to import the images.

iNat2Wiki edit

iNat2Wiki is a Flask app on toolforge that enables navigation by iNaturalist user, enabling identification and upload of openly licensed photos to Commons.

There is also an iNat2Wiki add-on for Chrome that helps connecting pics to Commons while browsing the iNaturalist interface.

Tarsier GBIF image search edit

Tarsier is a wrapper around the GBIF api. Given a scientific name of a taxon, links to images are returned. When the license allows reuse in Wikimedia commons and the host servers are allowed to directly upload to commons, images can then be directly uploaded. For usage stats of Tarsier-uploaded images, see here.

Currently, images from the following institutes can be uploaded to commons using Tarsier:

Images from the following domains can be uploaded by manually changing the url to the redirected URL (see github issue):

Images from the following domains can be uploaded by first downloading them locally (Some links provided in GBIF do not refer to an image, but direct to a link from where the image can be downloaded.):

The following institutes are proposed to be included in the list of domains from where images can be uploaded to commons automatically:

Usage stats edit

Files that are in the Wikimedia Commons category Media from iNaturalist are used thousands of times across Wikimedia projects, as detailed here.

Wiki Loves Earth edit

iNaturalist & Wiki Loves Earth edit

Wiki Loves Earth, the international photo contest on local natural heritage, is a fine occasion to combine iNat and Wikimedia. Use this Petscan-Query to search for Media from iNaturalist submitted to Wiki Loves Earth.
