Wikidata:WikiProject Biodiversity
WikiProject Biodiversity started as WikiProject iNaturalist: iNaturalist (Q16958215) is a citizen science project focused on biodiversity. It has a large community of enthusiasts, of which some are also active in the various Wikimedia communities. This WikiProject aims to improve the cross-pollination between iNaturalist and Wikimedia communities. Wikimedia Commons is an ideal platform to reuse iNaturalist observations, while iNaturalist with its high-grade annotations of observations provides valuable references to Wikidata statements. "Research grade" observations are incorporated into other online databases such as Global Biodiversity Information Facility (Q1531570). iNaturalist supports many Wikimedia-compatible licensing options, including Creative Commons CC0 License (Q6938433), Creative Commons Attribution (Q6905323) and Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (Q6905942). English language Wikipedia articles are also ingested into iNaturalist onto individual taxa pages.

iNaturalist licensing
editiNaturalist defaults to non-open licences, both for images and for observation data. To set these to open licences, or make a public domain declaration, see "How to simply modify licenses at iNaturalist".

Wiki loves iNaturalist!
editWiki loves iNaturalist! helps you find articles of species on Wikipedia and Wikidata that lack images and find appropriately licensed images in iNaturalist to use in Wikipedia articles. Note that you need the upload_by_url
user right to import the images directly to Commons.
iNaturalist2Commons
editiNaturalist2Commons is a user script that lets you import free-license images from iNaturalist to Commons. Note that you need the upload_by_url
user right to import the images.
iNat2Wiki
editiNat2Wiki enables navigation by iNaturalist users or projects, facilitating upload of openly licensed photos to Commons.
There is also an iNat2Wiki add-on for Chrome that helps connecting pics to Commons while browsing the iNaturalist interface.
Tarsier GBIF image search
editTarsier is a wrapper around the GBIF api. Given a scientific name of a taxon, links to images are returned. When the license allows reuse in Wikimedia commons and the host servers are allowed to directly upload to commons, images can then be directly uploaded. For usage stats of Tarsier-uploaded images, see here.
Currently, images from the following institutes can be uploaded to commons using Tarsier:
- iNaturalist
- Naturalis Biodiversity Center (NL)
- Artsobservasjoner (NO)
- MNHN - Museum national d'Histoire naturelle (FR)
- The Natural History Museum (UK)
- Kew botanical gardens (UK) (original request)
- Species recordings from the Danish National portal Arter.dk (DK) (original request)
- Lauri Mällo private collection of Lepidoptera (EE)Original request
- Natural history museum Rotterdam (NL)Original request
- Meise Botanical Garden (BE)
Images from the following domains can be uploaded by manually changing the url to the redirected URL (see github issue):
- The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) (AUS)
- California Academy of Sciences (US)
- The Bavarian Natural History Collections (DE)
Images from the following domains can be uploaded by first downloading them locally (Some links provided in GBIF do not refer to an image, but direct to a link from where the image can be downloaded.):
- NMNH Extant Specimen Records (USNM, US)
- California Academy of Sciences (US)
- Meise Botanical Garden (BE)
The following institutes are proposed to be included in the list of domains from where images can be uploaded to commons automatically:
