Devices edit
Is there any reason to restrict this item to software? It looks useful for devices too, e.g., Zoom H6 Handy Recorder (Q81525088) writable file format (P1073) MP3 (Q42591). The device would contain software which actually writes the file, but it doesn't seem worth creating a separate item for such unknown software. Ghouston (talk) 05:25, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
- I ran a query to see what devices this would be useful for. At the moment they account for 7 out of the 18 total constraint violations, however I was planning on adding this property to at least 11 others, and I'm sure there are loads more devices with firmware capable of writing files where this could be used. So it'd be great if appliance (Q1183543) could be added to the list of type constraints. --Aluxosm (talk) 10:57, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Aluxosm: I've added it to the constraints, since there were no objections, as electronic machine (Q2858615). I've also allowed subclasses as well as instances, since device models should be subclasses. I also added electronic machine (Q2858615) to Zoom H6 Handy Recorder (Q81525088), since sound recording device (Q66087652) is not a subclass of electronic device, since things like mechanical recorders using wax cylinders exist. - @Ghouston: Amazing, thanks for that! Good thinking about the phonograph cylinder (Q691783) haha. That reminds me, I had thought about this a while ago; Do you think that it would be a good idea to add two new subclasses - analog sound recording device and digital sound recording device to sound recording device (Q66087652)? At the moment it's pretty flat and would save having to add electronic machine (Q2858615) on every instance. Definitely one for Help:QuickStatements either way! --Aluxosm (talk) 10:07, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Aluxosm: It would make sense to have such items. Often there will be Commons categories for them to link with, e.g., c:Category:Digital sound recorders, which isn't a good match for digital recording (Q2473736). Ghouston (talk) 10:35, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

Useful as qualifier edit
I have added as qualifier (Q54828449) to the allowed scope constraint, since I find it useful with properties such as output device (P5196) to be able to state more precisely what formats are available for each output method (text, table, graph, animation etc). Sometimes similar file formats can be used for multiple outputs from the same application, in which case stating writable file format (P1073) as a main value only is insufficient to specify its purpose. In case this broadening of the scope is inappropriate or creates some unforeseen conflict, feel free to revert it as needed, but please leave an explanatory note here to let us know the reason.
