Sound Power (Pac) is measured in watt (Q25236), Sound Power Level (Lw) in decibel relative to 1 picowatt (Q23977060).--Kopiersperre (talk) 20:10, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Reference value of 1 pW

edit

ISO 80000-1:2009 Quantities and units—Part 1: General (Q26711930) recommends in section 7.2.1 that "Any attachment to a unit symbol as a means of giving information about the special nature of the quantity or context of measurement under consideration is not permitted.". This means that a unit like "decibel relative to 1 pW" is not recommended. Instead, the "context" should be included in the property description or elsewhere. Hello @Lymantria: About my "decommissioning" of item Q23977060, above is the explanation why I think this is the right course of action. Toni 001 (talk) 09:06, 12 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
It would still be an "informal" unit and is used as such. Lymantria (talk) 14:10, 12 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Lymantria: I propose to make this standard conform. Assume that every property which warrants some qualifier (reference value, substance, temperature, ...) were to follow the current model used by this property, then we would have a proliferation of units like "cubic metres of water", "cubic metres of sulfur", "cubic metre of water at 300K", ... The recommended way of stating such qualifiers is in the property, like this: "water volume: 5 cubic metres", "sulfur volume: 2 cubic metres", "water volume at 300K: 1 cubic metre". In that way, we'll be able to reuse the same unit in different contexts (as opposed to creating a new one - with all of its associated properties like conversion factors, ... - for each context). For this property, we would have (schematically): "sound pressure level (reference value 1 pW): 7 dB". Toni 001 (talk) 07:28, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
But note that references use this unit. Therefore the item is IMHO notable. Lymantria (talk) 07:49, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Lymantria: The change I propose is not about notability, but rather about moving the reference value from the unit into the property definition (in this case, into the description). This would also be consistent with current use of the property, whose constraints allow exactly one unit and reference value. Toni 001 (talk) 08:24, 14 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

I doubt Wikidata fully conforms to ISO 80000 in many respects. Maybe it should - I think that would take an RFC though. In the meantime, the situation here before Toni's edits seemed fine to me, everything appeared clear and self-evident, and I don't see the changes as a real improvement (though I don't think they're harmful per se either).
