Dafydd Iwan

edit

Hi, why did you restore pensaer to Q1157150 (Dafydd Iwan), reverting my edit? I am not a Welsh speaker, but I think in this context pensaer means architect. Dafydd Iwan studied architecture at university, but I can find reference to him working as an architect, and this is not mentioned in the articles on him in English or Welsh Wikipedia. The Welsh language description now reads pensaer, cerddor, gŵr busnes a chanwr Cymreig, which Google translate renders as architect, musician, businessman and Welsh singer. I would expect this list to be in order of significance. Singer and politician are his most important activities, and his business and architecture activities are probably so insignificant that it is misleading to mention them here. Verbcatcher (talk) 21:48, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Verbcatcher: Thanks for your response. There are a couple of problems with you reverting MY edit to DI. They start with my having known the man for over 60 years. If a person studies and qualifies for a trade s/he can be referred to as an artisan of that trade whether s/he plies the trade or not. Dafydd is a member of the RIBA, he is a qualified architect. More importantly, in the late 70's and early 80's there were a number of (what would now be called crowdfunded) nationalist campaigns to buy houses and shops for local Welsh people. Dafydd provided the architectural plans, on a voluntary basis, for most of those projects. He is not on the same level as Antoni Gaudí etc. of course. But he is, without doubt, an architect. AlwynapHuw (talk) 06:13, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
@AlwynapHuw: Thank you for your reply. I am relatively new to Wikidata, although I am an experienced editor on English Wikipedia. My understanding is that the sourcing requirements for Wikidata are similar to those for Wikipedia, although the referencing method is different, see Help:Sources. Knowing the man personally is not sufficient.
Your information on Dafydd Iwan is interesting. I can't find him in the RIBA Chartered Member database, so perhaps he is an affiliate member or a retired chartered member.[1]. You indicate that he completed his architecture studies. What degree did he receive (probably B.Arch or M.Arch)? Did he complete the RIBA three-part examinations? If you can find sources then this would be useful information for Wikidata and Wikipedia.
I disagree that someone who has qualified should be referred to as a practitioner of the trade or profession, a practitioner is someone who practises. Dafydd Iwan qualified as an architect, but it is misleading to call him an architect unless he has worked professionally as an architect. The same applies to people qualified in medicine, education or the law.
I recently added DI's work with Cymdeithas Tai Gwynedd to his English Wikipedia article. Can you identify sources that expand on this? I am not aware of any business activities other than his involvement with the record company Sain, which could be seen as an extension of being a musician.
The description field of Wikidata pages is a short phrase designed to disambiguate items with the same or similar labels, see Help:Description. It is not meant to be a potted biography, and in my view it should not contain anything not supported elsewhere in the Wikidata entry. I think 'Welsh musician and politician' is the phrase we need. Verbcatcher (talk) 16:10, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Verbcatcher: Thanks for your message. I have no interest in getting into an edit war with you over a minor issue. I stopped editing English Wikepedia because of such nonsense. Every word wasted on such futile arguments are words lost from Wicipedia Cymraeg. If, because of some political partisanship, that is beyond my understanding, you cannot accept that Dafydd is an architect fine. Create Wikidata as a reflection of the Anglosphere and your own prejudices. I had hoped that wikidata would be a means of sharing multi-cultural information, but it appears that it is another exercise in Anglo American cultural dominance, with the "English" opinion as sacrosanct - sod that! You have deleted my last contribution AlwynapHuw (talk) 04:22, 1 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@AlwynapHuw: Your intemperate attack on my motivations is insulting and is without foundation.
I am definitely not prompted by political partisanship or an Anglocentric viewpoint. I have spent the last few days working through thousands of clips of Welsh music on Commons that have been nominated for deletion, many of which I hope to be able to preserve. Most of these clips are in Welsh.
On the issue here I am motivated by a desire for good scholarship and accuracy. We appear to be disagreeing on what an architect is. I am not trying to bully you, but I am trying to encourage you to share sources on Dafydd Iwan that you may well be aware of that could help us to expand his Wikipedia articles and Wikidata page. Verbcatcher (talk) 04:49, 1 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Verbcatcher: O for F**k sake you were the one who started an edit war over a single data entry, on a not very contentious issue. How many data edits could you have made in the time that you have used to troll post me and DI for political nonsense reasons? Get a grip. AlwynapHuw (talk) 05:11, 1 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@AlwynapHuw: I deleted an entry that was questionable and unsourced, adding an explanatory comment. You restored it without leaving a comment. I asked you why here. How is that edit warring? Deleting a bad data entry is often more useful than adding data. How am trolling you? How am I trolling DI? How is this 'political nonsense? Please stop insulting me. Verbcatcher (talk) 05:20, 1 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Verbcatcher: When you are stuck in a hole the best advice is to stop digging. There is no doubt that Dafydd Iwan studied Architecture, there is no doubt that he has given planning advice to Adfer, Arianrhod & Cymdeithas Tai Gwynedd. The claim that you are trying to "work through thousands of clips of Welsh music on Commons that have been nominated for deletion" is rubbish. Those clips were provided by Dafydd's company, Sain, under Sain Music Clips licence and are in no danger of deletion. Wikidata is a fantastic tool. Better to contributed to it by adding data rather than creating futile talk/argument pages AlwynapHuw (talk) 05:14, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@AlwynapHuw: I am not questioning that Dafydd Iwan studied architecture at university but whether it is accurate to describe him as 'an architect'. You have offered no source to confirm that he gave planning advice to these organisations, your personal knowledge is insufficient here. I have made a positive contribution by locating finding a source for DI being a founder of Cymdeithas Tai Gwynedd,[2] and adding it to English Wikipedia. Please add this source to the Welsh article. This source describes DI as 'Trefnydd' and does not appear to mention him giving planning advice. Can you find more sources?
On the Sain clips, please see c:Commons:Deletion requests/SAIN audio files. Sain have nominated for deletion about half of the clips that they released, on the basis that they do not own the copyright of the music. For these clips to be kept on Commons we need to establish that the music is public domain. This means that the composer, the lyricist and where relevant the arranger and the translator all must have died more than 70 years ago. This is sometimes hard to establish, and your help would be welcome. For example, who wrote the music and words in c:File:Pan Ddawr Nos - Miriam Bowen.ogg, and when did they die?
Please do not question my good faith, I have not questioned yours. Verbcatcher (talk) 17:32, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Badge

edit

Hello AlwynapHuw, could you explain why you added a badge validated (Q20748093) for the link to cywikipedia? This badge is used only for Wikisource pages. It is probably a mistake but there could be another reason. That's why I am asking. Pamputt (talk) 09:18, 13 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@User:Pamputt. There is a problem with linking wikidata pages to those in lesser used languages where an article about the subject is unique to the leser used language, where wikidata won't allow one to publish the link without a badge. This is especially true in (but not exclusive to) the case of unique articles where a new wikidata category has been created to reflect an unique article in a lesser used language. So the answer to your question is, quite simply, that clicking a random badge resolves a frustrating problem for me. If you know of a better way of overcoming this problem I would be pleased to know about it. Thank you. AlwynapHuw (talk) 22:44, 14 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

You imported links on items, adding a validated (Q20748093) badge, here and on other items, which is wrong, since these badges are only meant for wikisource Wikisource work status indicator.

Please do not add those badges, that were not meant for wikipedia articles. Thanks. --Hsarrazin (talk) 11:31, 13 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Hsarrazin, if you could find a way to reword your question into a form that doesn't sound bullying, angry, threatening and authoritarian, I might consider replying to it. If not please don't contact me again. AlwynapHuw (talk)
sorry if my wording seemed bullying, angry, threatening and authoritarian… that was not my intention   ; English is not my native language and sometimes my wording seems harsh, because I cannot find the right word for what I mean - I was not sure it's yours either…
I only wanted to tell you that I had removed those badges (among hundred other badges, that other contributors added - in many languages) and that it would be nice that you do not do it again because it's an error, an error that is much longer and more difficult to clean up than the addition of the badge when linking an article.
I see on your answer above (to @Pamputt) that wikidata prevents you from adding a link without a badge ? I don't understand what you mean... I've never encountered this behaviour before, whatever the language... and if you really have this problem, you should ask about it on the Project Chat because it surely is either a bug or a mistake, which should be solved. - no badge is compulsory... on the contrary, badges are an exception, so there should not be any technical obligation to add one...
hope you'll continue enjoy contributing on wikidata :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 23:09, 14 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
