Merging items

edit

Hallo Commonssense,

If you were not already using it, you may want to check out the merge.js gadget for merging items. It has an option "Request deletion for extra items on RfD" to automatically nominate the page you are merging from for deletion. This way of nominating also makes it easier for the admins to process such requests. For support and other options you can check the help page about merging.

With regards, - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 12:06, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have no idea which gadget I've been using, something I've found by searching Special Pages. Wikidata is extremely difficult and time-consuming, it's not like I remember the next time around how I previously merged items. I wish I can limit my contribution to the site to the absolute minimum. Commonssense (talk) 14:55, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
When you install this one you will have it the next time as well, so next time you don't have to think about it any more and you don't even need to go to Wikidata:Requests for deletions anymore. You would have been able to merge Q26463505 into Q8500859 with two clicks and been done with it. Or you could have been able to perform the merge from the svwiki bij linking it to one of the entries of Q8500859 (the en:Category:Greenwood County, Kansas, for instance) and bots would have picked it up here without you even actually entering Wikidata. - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 08:56, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
If you don't want to help me out with merging the item by merging it, don't. I hope I can avoid this website as much as possible. Commonssense (talk) 08:58, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Bots might have picked it up if whoever created the category had linked it to one of the other items when they created it. Now it's a bit late and I've already wasted enough of my time here. Commonssense (talk) 09:02, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
So, basically you can't be bothered. - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 09:21, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Wikidata is not my thing. But I did help out the other user with their main problem (item on dewp was linked to the wrong WD page) because you were being rude to them. Commonssense (talk) 09:23, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
You the question: "What's the matter?" is a rude one? - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 09:40, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Let me just retract the rude bit. This is a site where speakers of various languages interact with each other, it can be a challenge sometimes. Commonssense (talk) 09:48, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I was a bit afraid of that. So, it was more how you thought, at that moment, I intended what I said that what I actually said. That diffenrence tricky. I try to be obvious when I'm rude. Like "So, basically you can't be bothered" was obviously somewhat rude. On Wikidata:Requests for deletions I tried to be helpful, but I should look into how I can formulate it so it's not easlily misinterpreted. - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 11:28, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
What I would be really interested in would be a possibility to close the account, so that neither I nor any other user could log into it (and possibly the username could be released for someone else, but if not, just closed). Responsible websites have a clear exit strategy for users that is not dependent on the weak impulse control of people. Commonssense (talk) 09:30, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'll look into that, no problem. - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 09:33, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
That would be highly appreciated. Commonssense (talk) 09:51, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
An account cannot be fully deleted because your edits needs to be linked to something. It needs to be linked to a name, but it doesn't have to be linked to any content. There are some templates for some wikis to have your user page deleted (see Q13107194) but Wikidata doesnt't have an entry itself. You could use the Template:delete but that won't prevent it from being recreated and you could just stop using wikidata and coming but that wouldn't stop notifications comming up on the project you still want to be active in. In this case you could use the Template:Retired (see Q5848674) and trust us to respect your request; We usually do. You could add a link to a userpage on a project you're still active in but just stating you don't want to be active anymore is a valid option. I hope this is the information you liked but if you'd like something additional I could look on, but I cannot garantuee there's much more. - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 11:46, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
There has to be something else apart from this and if there isn't, there should be. But thanks anyway for your good work, I wonder if I should take this matter up someplace else, at the community portal or something when I have the time to do it. Commonssense (talk) 14:35, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I suppose Wikidata:Project chat, but that would mean you have to get a lot more involved with Wikidata which would be a bit of a paradox. It all depends on how important this matter is to you. Good luck if you choose to take it up. - cycŋ - (talkcontribslogs) 15:38, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
