Welcome to my User talk page! -- Deborahjay (talk)
Introduction
editHi again Deborahjay, and thanks for your message. As a first step, and since you speak several languages, my recommendation would be that you use the babel template to list your language proficiency on your user page. You can use my user page as inspiration or take a look at Help:Navigating_Wikidata/User_Options. Once you have this enabled you will see the labels/aliases of the items in your preferred languages. As a next step, I would recommend taking a tour which will introduce you to the basics of Wikidata editing. After that if you want you can join any wikiproject, if you feel like. Then you are ready to start editing! There is a Wikidata:List of properties, but there are many more that you can explore with tools like SQID. Once you are acquainted with the project, you can take a look to the tools that the community has built to make life easier. And of course if you have any question, just ask ahead.--Micru (talk) 19:24, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
Shalom Deborah!
About your edit in Ophir Award for Best Original Music (Q28782509).
This ophir award is not for soundtrack, there is a seperate Ophir Award for soundtracks in Ophir Award for Best Soundtrack (Q28782538). This Ophir Award is for the best music.
--Mikey641 (talk) 18:15, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
@Mikey641: Of course I want to correct this. The official website is only in Hebrew and difficult to navigate, and I don't trust IMDb entries in English. I only see the Hebrew text in he:פרס אופיר which is also the Hebrew label for the Wikidata item. So just to translate it literally, "best original music"? (I also saw there the separate prize for soundtrack which you mention here. רב תודות עבור התעניינותך וההכוונה! -- Deborahjay (talk) 19:02, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
- I think that "best original music" would be the best translation. To be honest I really didn't understand the difference between best music and soundtrack. בשמחה .--Mikey641 (talk) 19:04, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Hi Deborahjay AND @Mikey641: Sorry for butting in here. I have just edited the WD page in question. I hope my change is acceptable, if not I apologize. Ottawahitech (talk) 22:53, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
Sensoring of information
editYour edit of Major of the Mossos d'Esquadra (Q42108911) was not in good taste, and in my mind is attempt to gag information. You say that it was done because of 'excessive detail in description'. The description was short and to the point: 'Prif Heddwas y Mossoss, hyd at 2017 pan diswyddwyd ef gan Lywodraeth Sbaen.' Do remember that our mission is to further the 'sum of all human knowledge' and not just the bits which fit in with your political agenda! Celtica (talk) 13:31, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

Removing constraints on Commons category (P373)
editHi, this is not the right way to fix a typo. Multichill (talk) 20:57, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, Multichill. Besides the typo, my mistake was not having placed the template {{Wikidata infobox}} on the Commons Category page for that individual. In appreciation for your picking up and reverting my errors in WD, I thanked you for both. Cheers -- Deborahjay (talk) 07:28, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi
editHi Deborahjay,
I hope you remember me from simple? It looks like you speak pretty good wikidata-ish and I need some basic help. Can you spare a moment? Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 19:39, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Ottawahitech:, I'm here - let's see what you've got. -- Deborahjay (talk) 19:44, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- wow, thanks. Here is my problem: I have just created a duplicate item and don't want to get in trouble. I have committed this error before, and I think someone was mad at me because of it (sorry I don't remember any details). I am only an occasional contributor here, and I seem to forget many of the quirks in between visits.
- One thing I just remembered after creating this new item (hope I am using the right terminology), is that often when I do a search to see if it exists on wd, I get a negative, but after I create a new item, suddenly my search finds another incarnation. I hate to make work for the volunteers who now must delete my new redundant creation.
- This is what happened when I created d:Q130718730, lo and behold I now see d:Q6962947. Sorry for rambling. I hope I am making sense? Ottawahitech (talk) 19:58, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Just from what you've written (and I have yet to actually look at the items you describe, I'm on a long-distance chat with family at present) - the matter may be solved with a Merge of the two items. Have you looked at the edit History? -- Deborahjay (talk) 20:04, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for your help. Please carry on with your chat. I'll check here again next time I'm on wd. Ottawahitech (talk) 20:10, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Just an update: I found Help:merge (which btw, was not easy because I had to track it from the bottom of d:Q102426144 after finding several alternatives at the wd search box), and am still trying to figure out which is the better alternate for me to use. Should I use Automatic merge or Manual merge step by step both which seem pretty daunting judging by the lengthy explanation.
- Anyway I wonder if the page I created is worth anything since the only additional piece of information on it is the url of the NBC article that mentions Shlomo Vishinsky. Maybe deleting it and adding the url to the existing wd item is much easier? Ottawahitech (talk) 13:53, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Another update: Looks like a good soul has merged my useless wd page with the existing wd item and saved me the embarrassment. I see you have also added a lot to it. I used the info to create a page about Shlomo Vishinsky on the English wikiquote and tried to include two of the quotes from the Hebrew wikiquote with the help of google (which I find works pretty good most of the time). The translation is a bit clunky, but it works, I think? Ottawahitech (talk) 01:20, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Deborah J. Oyer
editHi again, I wonder if I may impose one more time? I am trying to start new item at wd about Deborah J. Oyer Who was the author of at quote on the English wikiquote page about abortion
This what the quote looks like at enwq
- How does a doctor's ability to stop an abortion supersede a woman's right to full knowledge of her medical condition? Doctors in the antiabortion movement continue to declare themselves more virtuous than me. But I ask which one of us tells only the truth to our patients, and which of us is willing to lie to get what we want. I will not lie to my patients, no matter how difficult it may be to deliver the news. I trust them to ask good questions and make educated decisions, with my help if they ask for it. I had hoped that the rest of the medical community shared my beliefs about being honest with patients. I am greatly saddened to learn otherwise.
- Deborah J. Oyer, M.D., "Playing politics with the doctor–patient relationship". New England Journal of Medicine. 366, (24): 2326–2327. 2012.CS1 maint: extra punctuation (link)
I searched wd, and even though some of her work shows up, I can't see an item about her and would like to add one if I can. I am assuming that a person whose work is already present on wd items is considered notable enough to have a page here?
Again my apologies if m terminology is not up to snuff, and as usual no hurry. Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 21:00, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Ottawahitech:, here are my thoughts about the matter you've raised here - though I do this based on reasoning without a systematic review of WD policy (due to lack of opportunity on my part at present):
- The WQ item comes from the New England Journal of Medicine, which in itself doesn't grant notability to authors who publish articles there though prestigious in its professional field.
- Findings of online search show the author to be a practicioner of family medicine in a populous part of the Pacific Northwest, but not a researcher which is usually what grants notability in the medical profession.
- Having an item in WQ justifies having a WD item so that background about the author is easily accessible as part of the Wikimedia database.
- I'll follow through by creating a WD item for Deborah J. Oyer, M.D. based on the information in this web page and linking to the enwq item. -- Deborahjay (talk) 10:51, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Fantastic! Ottawahitech (talk) 17:17, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- UPDATE: I've created the item but don't know how to add the Wikiquote. (My attempt was only for the page on the topic Abortion, which is already linked to that WD item.) -- Deborahjay (talk) 11:00, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- I did not remember that this item was already linked to wd on the abortion page. Off to enwq to see :-) , til latte most logoff. Thanks again Ottawahitech (talk) 17:22, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- As far as Deborah J. Oyer on the enwq I hope it will bear fruit eventually.
- Sorry to take so long to communicate. I'd like to fill in some of the gaps I left out before because was not sure you would be interested. <snip> cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:31, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

English Wikiquote and the #shesaid campaign
editUser:Ottawahitech writes:
- The English Wikiquote is currently participacipating in the #shesaid campaign. The campaign will last until the end of December. We have been participating in this campaign since 2020. From my pov this campaign has done wonders for our little sleepy project: We have tons of new editors, some of whom stay around and continue to grow with the project. The downside is that during the campaign this causes havoc in a project without enough experienced volunteers.
- Am I making any sense at all? cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:31, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
(reply at q:User talk:Deborahjay) -- Deborahjay (talk) 11:49, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Just visiting again. I have been sidetracked on other wmf-wikis, but today I went in to see what was happening at the#shesaid campaign on enwq. I started by looking at recent changes and right at the top I noticed q:Floretta Boonzaier, so went in to check if this was related the campaign, and bingo. So I came to WD to add a link for this new page at Floretta Boonzaier (Q31247425) and started rooting around. On her enwp page there was mention of another person who did not have an enwp page, but there is one at WD: Shose Kessi (Q112323043) doctoral candidate at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
- I then proceeded to check who Kessi's doctoral advisor(s) are/were and, no surprise, two women:
- Caroline Howarth (Q112184258)
- and
- Claudine Provencher (Q112264507)
- Dr Howarth has 5 doctoral students listed, all of which I assume are women judging from their names. One of her doctoral advisors, a woman, is listed as: Sandra Jovchelovitch (Q7416650). Dr Jovchelovitch has/had 10 doctoral students of which only 2-3 are men. Her one doctoral advisor is a man. As far as her wikimedia presence there is only one lonely article about this Brazilian social psychologist on enwp. But it appears that many of her doctoral-descendants will flourish if things continue at the same rate.
- I hope I did not bore you, just my way of expressing thanks to all the tireless contributors at WD. Ottawahitech (talk) 14:40, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
Charles Gordon-Frazer
editHi again Deborahjay,
I am again stuck, not knowing if I should add this apparently famous painter Born: 1863 Died: 1899 who was also known as Charles E Gordon Frazer. I can't find him on enwp and I can't find him here on wd.
Do you have time to help? Don't worry if you don't, I'm sure I can find another victim if you are too busy:) Ottawahitech (talk) 12:37, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- WikiCommons has a reproduction of a painting of his, Cannibalism on Tanna, that's in public domain (being >100 yrs old), which has been used to illustrate the topic of "Cannibalism" on several WP projects. For access to information about the artist, a WikiData item would be helpful. However: the link you gave to askArt.com gives rise to the question of the reliability of content there. It's evidently a commercial site and unclear what sourcing the contributing authors of artists' biographies there have to provide. Have you looked at this artist's presence in established museums and galleries (such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia, where this painting was displayed in the late 19th C.)? -- Deborahjay (talk) 19:34, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I first saw Cannibalism on Tanna in the wq article about cannibalism and when I clicked over to Commons, I Was intrigues when I could find no trace of Charles Gordon-Frazer anywhere in wiki land. I wonder if this is because he is "not notable" (I know very little about paintings), or is Cannibalism simply a taboo subject just like pedophilia is in wiki land? Ottawahitech (talk) 16:38, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- Seeking a reliable source referencing bio material, I searched the artist's name in Google which yielded records from auction houses. Among them, Christie's is probably best known. The content for that link had two valuable instances:
- the provenance: "Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904)" - which association is mentioned in the AskArt bio.
- the bio content (more expansive than on AskArt) clearly gave a published source: "(from Our Contemporaries -- A Biographical Repertoire of the Men and Women of the Day 1897-1898, London, 1898, p.198)"
- It appears that the AskArt site displays the "first 750 characters" of that bio but requires site visitors to log in to view the rest. The top-flight, venerable Christie's provided it quite nicely and formatted, plus they apparently hold a collection including the original "Cannibal Feast." This is why we pursue better sources, even on the web without having to visit remote libraries! Let me know if you want to create the WD item, or I can make a very basic one and you can take over if you like. Having the one file in WikiCommons already, the WD item won't be an "orphan" and risk deletion for lack of notability, and if/when another editor wants to write an entry on the artist, the WD item will be in place (thanks to your initiative). I hope the process I've described has encouraged your involvement with WikiData. Cheers, -- Deborahjay (talk) 12:33, 7 December 2024 (UTC)

Hebrew alphabet on the English wikiquote
editHi Deborahjay,
As a professional translator I wonder if you have an interest in wikiquote:Hebrew alphabet or any of its category siblings? cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 19:57, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, @Ottawahitech:! Thank you for bringing this project to my attention. My education, unfortunately, leaves me essentially unqualified to edit in the Hebrew language, including its alphabet. As is the case with many in the profession, I translate from my acquired languages to my native English in which I have a B.A. in Literature (magna cum laude from UCLA. 1976).
- The main contribution I can make in the Wikimedia projects is to provide and improve romanized (i.e. Latin alphabet) transcription of names from the Hebrew alphabet, which even many Jews outside of Israel don't read. This includes placing the DEFAULTSORT template so that pages and categories are displayed in their respective categories according to surname. So I'm largely working in Wikicommons, from which I discover Wikidata items with missing, inadequate, and incorrect labels. The other major involvement is maintenance and improving content (e.g. romanized names from Hebrew, Russian and Arabic) of the Women in Red/Israelis list in the English Wikipedia.
- This is fairly minor, technical work based on my fund of knowledge - and to be honest, in a year when I'm trying to avoid conflicts, even here I find the occasional editor reverting my contributions with no explanation. I hope to gain improved resilience as we plan to start moving back home when the security conditions stabilize, and that this will be reflected in more meaningful, content-based edits. Stay in touch! Cheers, -- Deborahjay (talk) 10:48, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
- I hope you get to move back home soon! What a terrible situation, which I am afraid most contributors here are not aware of, sigh... Also, Just a few moments ago I added some of the women you have added to WD to Wikiquote:WQ:SheSaid/RedLists, this is how I discovered your post which has just shown up on my notifications, even though the timestamp shows it was posted hours ago.
- As far as wikiquote:Hebrew alphabet it is an article in the English language explaining (correctly or incorrectly) how the Hebrew alphabet works.
- Sorry for the brevity, must get back to wiki-work. Ottawahitech (talk) 17:02, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
Haredi burqa sect (Q5656781)
editI continue to look at your contributions to WD to learn new things. Today I discovered Haredi burqa sect (Q5656781) which sounds really interesting so I'll have to follow up on ENWP to understand how this article got this unusual name :-) Ottawahitech (talk) 19:06, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, Ottawahitech! You're of course welcome to sample my contributions which feature the intersectionality of Israel, Jewish history, and women's matters as I work through the WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by nationality/Israel. While I have a focal committment to the arts and letters, there are so many women in the fields of business and sports I do attempt to cycle them into focus. The somewhat marginal Haredi burqa sect and the related Lev Tahor have been in the news recently, but a far more widespread and insidious topic not well-covered in the enwiki is Gender separation in Judaism as it's expressed in Israeli society with encroaching exclusion of women from the public sphere. Examples are prohibiting women's performance (as speakers and singers) in military and civic ceremonies so their voices literally won't disturb men in the audience; segregated classes in academic institutions and in public entertainment for families (with premium seating reserved for males, i.e. fathers and sons); and the institution of dress codes for underage (kindergarten!) girls in certain neighborhoods including buses traveling through. I appreciate your bringing my attention to these pages that would benefit from expansion and careful editing for neutral language, e.g. "cult" is POV. Watch for updates! Cheers, -- Deborahjay (talk) 14:28, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- Talking of marginal topics, have you seen this: wikiquote:Anarchists Against the Wall? I just discovered this one because of one of its cats. Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:39, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
California fires
editHi Deborahjay, I have been glued the TV set since I heard about the ceasefire actually going ahead. So far, even though I had my reservations, it seems to be going smoothly, I think? Does that mean you will be going home soon? I still cannot findtoo much info on the tens of thousands of displaced Israelis, but there is tons of information the displaced Los Angeles Fires evacuees. For example: should they continue to pay their mortgage even though their house is gone (the answer I saw was yes, which I will have to check for accuracy when I get a chance).
Holding my fingers (and toes) for you! Ottawahitech (talk) 20:25, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
