Lafayette

edit

Hello Kostas,

My name is Alex Labat, Director of Online Engagement with Lafayette Travel. I was the one recently editing the Lafayette Wikidata page, and I'm hoping I might be able to explain myself in the hopes I might be able to clear things up, and hoping you might be able to help me in finally fixing an issue that has persisted for years.

I am attempting to update the Freebase/Wikidata information for Lafayette in order to reconcile an error that has been persisting on Facebook for months.

This stems from Facebook pointing to LafayetteLa.gov as the "official website" for the city of Lafayette. However, Lafayette Travel is the main website for the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission. We handle "visitors" both online and offline. Festivals, Events, Historical and Hotel information, our website "is" the main resource for the city, its list of local businesses as a directory and handles all major events.

While I understand the argument that the city government maintains a presence, its causing major reconciliation issues for us. For example, we are now an official partner and Google DMO. When visitors are looking to call for any information about our area, they call us. If they are visiting the city for official information, they come to the Visitor's Center. The Lafayette Convention and Visitor's Commission is a government agency that works on behalf of lafayettela.gov. In fact, you can see our website on the main page. As such, I have been attempting as an official with the city of Lafayette to update this information appropriately and correctly, as to not cause these "spam cloud" issues.

But. We operate the Facebook Page and online presence for the city of Lafayette, Louisiana. However, because lafayettela.gov is listed as the resource, here is what has happened.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lafayette-Louisiana/109690282390922

If you scroll down on the page, you'll notice it has close to 50,000 likes and checkins. Here is the issue. This page was auto-generated and I believe it is from the Wikipedia dump of 2013. Either that, or, Facebook searched city names with .gov after it and generated the page from there.

I say this with the utmost confidence because, it you look at the Graph API Explorer for Facebook and plug in this page, what will return is this schema

If you compare this with the google search for lafayette.gov

https://www.google.com/search?source=hp&ei=6UB2Wu7sMtCUjwOGqZOACg&q=lafayette.gov&oq=lafayette.gov&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0j0i10k1j0l5j0i10k1j0l2.614.4628.0.4751.14.9.0.0.0.0.579.879.3-1j0j1.2.0....0...1c.1j2.64.psy-ab..12.2.879...46j0i46k1.0.rso7xY9iFMw

You will see that this is how the Facebook Page is constructing itself. It is utilzing the wikidata entry /Q128891 along with Freebase.

https://m.facebook.com/pages/Lafayette-Louisiana/109690282390922

The profile image, the information, everything is auto generated. But the page has sat stagnant because no one has realized what was happening. People are checking into a place and page that technically "doesn't exist" because it isn't tied to the correct page. I know this, because Las Vegas has their Visitor's Center page listed as a City, with the canonical URL pointing to the place.

So, I need to update this entry, as well as the freebase entry so that Facebook can recrawl it, carrying over all of the appropriate information. Pointing to photos, information, etc. I want to ensure I do this the right way, and I am looking into the article you sent.

We'd mainly need the website lafayettela.gov to now be lafayettetravel.com instead. I'd like to add additional information, like the citied official social networks, but I'll take one step at a time. I was going to attempt the fix with OpenRefine but I wanted to come here first. Any help you might be able to offer in helping me submit updated information would help me fix an issue no one else has been able to solve

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our gift is better than the one at Commons or Meta)

Here's your badge: {{User admin}}/{{#babel:admin}} and {{Admin topicon}}. Enjoy!

Congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Wikidata. Please take a moment to read the Wikidata:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Wikidata:Project chat, Wikidata:Requests for comment, and Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikidata-admin @ irc.freenode.net. If you need access, you can flag someone down at #wikidata @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Wikidata:Guide to Adminship to be useful reading. You may also want to consider adding yourself to meta:Template:Wikidata/Ambassadors, and to any similar page on your home wiki if one exists. (Check Wikipedia:Wikidata/Wikidatans (Q14964498).)

Please also add/update the languages you speak to your listing at Wikidata:List of administrators. You may also like to add your username to this list if you would not like that items you delete at RfD get marked as deleted automatically. Again, welcome to the admin corps!

Right requests

edit

Hi Kostas20142,

Congrats to your adminship. I noticed that you granted a series of properties creator rights. While this is a good thing (we lack them, even though admins can also create properties), I was wondering how you decided to grant them to Amitie_10g. I'm asking as I found myself fixing their proposals in the past. --- Jura 15:02, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Jura1: Hello and thank you. Examining their contributions, I determined that they roughly meet the requirements for granting (being trusted, having some history working with properties, understanding relevant concepts - even if not perfect) so, given that no objections were raised, I decided to grant, and I think that they are and will be a net positive. Their only creation so far was ok (some improvements were made by another user and I left then a message after you contacting me). Thanks for sharing your concerns; if you have any other concerns/remarks in the future feel free to contact me again. Also if you have some specific concerns/advice for the user, it might be a good idea to contact them to discuss them. --Kostas20142 (talk) 16:02, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's true that they might figure it out by actually trying to create properties. One would think they would at least try to do the steps outlined on the property creator's page. But maybe that's just my POV. In any case, I think I (and a few others) did their share of explaining, it's your decision after all. --- Jura 20:10, 13 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Add and remove?

edit

Hello Kostas20142 Why do you add a link to the page on [elwikiquote] Πάτζι Ξάμπι Λεζάμα Πέρι on April 25, 2020 and 3 days later you delete it Page on [elwikiquote] deleted: Πάτζι Ξάμπι Λεζάμα Πέρι 28 April 2020? If everything was the same, why did you add it and then remove it? I do not understand.--83.213.130.73 17:25, 28 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

The page was restored by me due to a miscommunication on the initial deletion rationale (was "no meaningful content" if I recall - which wasn't the case) and hence I added it at the respective item. I investigated the topic further and deletion was done due to notability issues. The removal from WD item is done automatically. If you have any concerns about this, it would be better to raise it at elwikiquote project chat ("Βήμα") so that editors are given the chance to comment. --Kostas20142 (talk) 18:32, 28 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
