Hello, I'm Andreasmperu. In case you didn't know, descriptions begin with a lowercase letter except when uppercase would normally be required or expected. Essentially, you should pretend that the description is appearing in the middle of a normal sentence, and then follow normal language rules. Most terms would not be capitalized if they appeared in the middle of a sentence. However terms such as proper nouns (e.g. the names of specific people, specific places, and specific titles) should be capitalized. Thank you for your work in maintaining Wikidata. I have a small suggestion to improve your future work. If you notice that two items are duplicates, please merge them instead of blanking one of them as you did with the item Q108881533. External sites use Wikidata identifiers, so it is important that we preserve the chain of references. We do this by making one item a redirect for the other. In particular, item ids are intended to be a permanent identifier, so we never reuse them for another concept. Pepper - sublcass of

Hi Sofie, i reverted your edit on Pepper (Q17190252) because we have a structural need for subclass of (P279) there, because we have Items for invidual Pepper robots in Wikidata like Luzi (Q111313567). Best, Mfchris84 (talk) 10:04, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Aliases

If you say it, and spell it, exactly as the French name is, then are you speaking in Czech language or is it a loan from the French? And if the spelling and orthography is exactly the same as native French, why do the aliases need to be repeated in foreign languages? Does not the French name suffice for these as well? That is the implied status quo for blank aliases.

In regards to Delta, the same principle applies, of course, to an obviously English name such as that, but also some aliases were kept such as "Airlines" "Air Service" and "Connection" which are all clearly English words, not German or Spanish. Again, if the Germans call it "Delta Airlines" then perhaps they are not speaking German at all. I eat tacos and burritos without trying to claim that these are English words for ethnic food. 1) I disagree with the implication that using e.g. "Delta Airlines" in German is somehow not speaking German. Firstly, this is a name and those are commonly used in the same form across languages, secondly languages evolve every day and loaning words (like "burrito") from another language is one of the basic processes in that evolution. If you wanted to apply that principle ad absurdum than English would barely be a language at all since most of it has origins in other Germanic languages, French etc.

2) The question of whether it's enough to have the "original" name in the "origin" language in Wikidata (e.g. "Notre-Dame" as a French alias) and not add it for other languages that might use it as well: obviously there can be different approaches to this but isn't the point of the whole Wiki project to make information accessible to as many people around the world as possible? If someone, e.g. a Czech speaker is looking for Notre-Dame (which when used in Czech refers primarily and obviously to the cathedral in Paris), it would be nice to have that label available among the Czech aliases as this person might not even see the French ones in their WD settings. The rules for labels and aliases in WD help says to reflect common usage - therefore if a name is commonly used in a language for an object, it should have this name listed as a label or alias in that language. Hi, that's a bit of a philosophical question :) When it comes to the Czech expressions, "požitek" is a short-term pleasurable feeling, typically caused by something physical (good food etc.), while "libost" is more long lived and more meta-physical. Sofie Geneea (talk) 07:45, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
