Short URL link edit

If a SPARQL query is run you can create a "Short URL to result". Is the link persistent or time-limited? If I make a small change to the query will it create a new short URL?--Wolbo (talk) 13:15, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Persistent. The short URL links to the query URL as it was at the time you caused the creation of the short URL. Changes made to the query after causing the short URL to be created, will not be found if the short URL is used. Neither is a new short URL created automatically in such circumstances, unless you go through the process of causing a new short URL to be created. --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:20, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
That's good to know, thanks. Two follow-up questions. It seems the variable part of the URL is only the three characters after https://w.wiki/ eg https://w.wiki/y2U. With all those queries run (must surely be millions) how does the URL link stay unique? Also it seems the URL link defaults to the table view of the query result. Is it possible to create a direct URL link to e.g. the timeline or map view of a query? --Wolbo (talk) 13:45, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
As to the first, short URLs are created (in WDQS) only when the user selects Link / Short URL to result. As to the second, you can create a short URL for any wikimedia URL at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UrlShortener - and there is more info on the service at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_URL_Shortener ... so you could copy the URL of a WDQS query such that you're taken to the WDQS UI or - I presume - to a timeline or other specific visualiation. I think the salient difference is the embed.html part of the URL - which takes you to the result, versus no embed.html which takes you to the WDQS UI.
Thanks again, will have a look. One of the nice aspects of wiki is that if you don't know something there is always someone else who does.--Wolbo (talk) 14:13, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Wolbo, For the other part of your question, you can change the target by using the #defaultView... code in the query itself; eg this query (result) will default to showing images, while this one (result) will show the normal table view. Andrew Gray (talk) 22:30, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Andrew Gray, that's also useful as well as easy. Thanks.--Wolbo (talk) 17:31, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
