- In principle support, but do we need multiple gazetteer IDs if we have SCAR Composite Gazetteer place ID (P3230), which aggregates them all? In theory (and AIUI in practice, give or take a little update lag) everything in this should be in there, particularly as they're maintained by the same people... - Comment @Andrew Gray: I just tried searching SCAR Composite Gazetteer place ID (P3230) for "Fiftyone Glacier" as used in the example above and no results were returned. Dhx1 (talk) 16:59, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Dhx1: Aha - I see what's happening. The SCAR Composite Gazetteer place ID (P3230) *only* covers places in the Treaty area, south of 60S. The Australian national one includes the Heard and McDonald Islands, which are sub-Antarctic; as they're outside the Treaty area (and so Australian territory proper) they're not included in SCAR Composite Gazetteer place ID (P3230). So for the small number of items in Heard & McDonald, which includes Fiftyone Glacier, this gazeteer will have coverage and SCAR won't. Andrew Gray (talk) 12:53, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- Comment @Andrew Gray: Thanks, that's a great explanation of the situation. If this property was just a duplicate/subset of SCAR Composite Gazetteer place ID (P3230), I would have questioned why it was needed as well. Dhx1 (talk) 12:50, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
