Description | collection/tree of rooms (channels) on matrix |
---|---|
Data type | URL |
Example 1 | Programvareverkstedet (Q113262282) → #pvv:pvv.ntnu.no |
Example 2 | NixOS (Q21998874) → #community:nixos.org |
Example 3 | Matrix (Q22906785) → #community:matrix.org |
Expected completeness | always incomplete (Q21873886) |
Formatter URL | matrix:r/$1 NB: we'd need to strip the # – WRONG FORMAT |
Motivation
editMatrix is becoming increasingly popular in free software communities
For matrix rooms we're using P8009 (IM channel), which we could reuse for spaces, but they are semantically very different, being more closely related to P9345 (Discord server), being as it's a collection of channels/users, and not an actual channel
it'd be nice if we could insert just the alias, but if we can't I guess they'd have to be entered the same way as in IM channel

Discussion
edit- Strong support I oppose using IM channel URL (P8009) for storing Matrix rooms because that property is used in multiple contexts and filtering IM channel URL (P8009) to only show Matrix rooms require using regular expressions which is a skill that some users lack. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rdrg109 (talk • contribs) at 20:04, August 2, 2022 (UTC).
- Comment Another idea would be to add a matrix room property, with a qualifier for type of room. Which could then be "chat", or "space", or "video room", or whatever else room types which get standardized in the future. Dandellion Dali99 (talk) 00:52, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose The name of this property is confusing for mathematicians. It sounds like a space that contains mathematical matrices. Can we make the name less ambiguous? — The Erinaceous One 🦔 05:25, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support Maybe the name can be changed to "Matrix space ID". Anyway, description must explain that this property refers to the IM system, not to the mathematical concept. --Tinker Bell ★ ♥ 04:42, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
- Comment is the type actually URL? Shouldn't it be external identifier? BrokenSegue (talk) 04:11, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose technically spaces are a subtype of room. +1 to using qualifiers instead. --Tgr (talk) 19:02, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- Comment I proposed Wikidata:Property proposal/Matrix channel. --Tgr (talk) 18:22, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
- Now renamed to Wikidata:Property proposal/Matrix room (2). --Tgr (talk) 18:48, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
- Comment Moving to Wikidata:Property proposal/Authority control#Social networking service for better categorization. Feel free to revert back if needed, hope it helps. TiagoLubiana (talk) 15:35, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
- Added the subpage to that list. --Tgr (talk) 18:48, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
- Comment FWIW, for Wikidata:Property proposal/Matrix room (2) we ended up on the
https://matrix.to/#/$1
formatter URL, which is more user-friendly thanmatrix:r/$1
which would only work if a Matrix client is already installed. (Also with matrix.to there is no need to strip the#
so it does not require software changes which I think the formatter URL proposed here would.) --Tgr (talk) 18:48, 25 December 2022 (UTC) - Oppose for the same reason of The-erinaceous-one – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Danysan1 (talk • contribs).
- Not done The newly created Matrix room ID (P11478) can also be used for Matrix spaces. I added "Matrix space" as an alias to that new property to make it discoverable. --Push-f (talk) 15:38, 8 January 2023 (UTC)
