---|---|
Represents | wind assistance (Q2272605) |
Data type | Number (not available yet) |
Domain | for use on athlete items with personal best (P2415) and on competition items with participant (P710) to qualify race time (P2781) |
Allowed values | any positive or negative value to one decimal place (e.g. +2.1, -4.8) |
Allowed units | metre per second (Q182429) |
Example | Tyson Gay (Q200683) race time (P2781) 9.68 seconds, wind speed → +4.1 m/s (he holds a personal best of 9.69 for the 100 metres, but also has a best time of 9.68 (+4.1 m/s wind-assisted) Emile Erasmus (Q24951734) personal best (P2415) 10.08 second, wind speed → +2.0 m/s |
Motivation
I'm currently looking to flesh out the model we'll need to store Olympic results in Wikidata. In the sport of athletics the wind speed is measured for short sprints and horizontal jumps. The impact of this is that the athlete performance is not viable as a record or world ranking if the wind speed is over +2.0 m/s - hence a performer could win gold with a wind-assisted long jump, yet another athlete could have set the Olympic record at a shorter, non-wind-assisted distance. This data is standard recording practice in athletics (e.g.). I'm not aware of common use of this concept outside of track and field events. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 12:58, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
Discussion
- Support David (talk) 15:21, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- Support Hmmm - maximum sustained winds (P2895) is also a wind speed, but a very different context; I can see the need for a separate property for this. ArthurPSmith (talk) 22:42, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- Question can you give a structured example? NMaia (talk) 22:33, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
- @NMaia: For example, there is no windspeed data on the personal best at Emile Erasmus (Q24951734). The wind speed data for that performance is +2.0 m/s. This could be added to the personal best entry as a qualifier with this property. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 19:37, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
@NMaia, ArthurPSmith, ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2, Sillyfolkboy: Done: wind speed (P5065). − Pintoch (talk) 21:33, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- Support Wind speed is necessary for any complete recording of an athletics performance because any sprint performances with wind over 2.0m/s are considered not record-eligible by the IAAF. Currently, it's impossible to create an accurate record-eligible all-time listing with e.g. a SPARQL query because of this, as it would contain ineligible performances with no way to tell which don't count.
