Phase 1 key activities

edit

Prong 1: Map EMEW IDs to existing Wikidata items, or create new items when they do not exist.

edit
  • A) propose and seek approval of a Wikidata property for EMEW ID
waiting on first-iteration EMEW ID landing page for some examples
will need items for EMEW, VR (TODO) done
Most EMEW IDs will relate to things from imported gazetteers --> matching the contents of these gazetteers are important datasets
May want a second ID for EMEW facts, so that we can easily reference eg coordinates in EMEW from a particular gazetteer to the relevant EMEW factoid.
It is possible we may not have wikidata items for all EMEW IDs (notability?) -- but we certainly should if any other online resource has an identifier for the same thing.

Prong 2: Create or improve Wikidata items for concepts significant to the EMEW project

edit
See also Specific items
  • Identify maps, texts and other sources of value for improving and referencing Wikidata's content about early modern England and Wales.
    • Create or improve items about mapmakers and diarists
    • Create or improve items for works by these mapmakers and diarists
    • Create items for manuscript and printed editions of these works
    • Create or improve items for individual copies ("exemplars") of these editions, especially digitized copies
    • Add "Main subject" to scholarly articles of relevance to this project

Prong 3: Investigate & prototype ways for the EMEW Gazetteer to present information pulled from Wikidata

edit
  • EMEW should have core ability to present info for a single EMEW id, and for a single "EMEW fact" ID.
  • Possible usages of WD info:
    • eg plot a list of EMEW ids on the VR map pulled via giving a URL for a query on WDQS. (lists also specifiable in a VR url ?)
    • eg infoboxes on the VR-wiki ?
    • eg routinely using information from wd to augment info presented by VR for a mapped place ?
INVESTIGATE sweet spot between pulling across data from wd on the fly vs keeping it locally at VR, perhaps updating it weekly vs full integration at VR
Best methods for plumbing in on-the-fly re-use? Should be well-established how to best do by now. Need to find & ask the right people.
  • On the Wikidata side, need to quality-improve those external-id datasets. Are they well-matched? How complete are they - are there more matches that could be made? (esp for items likely to appear in EMEW) --> also relevant datasets for Prong 2.

Status report (Friday 5 March 2021)

edit

VR current priority is upgrading to support cycle 1 projects;

  • so WD current focus is on assessing and building content at WD, even before being able to link to EMEW
  • also building out the WikiProject pages, & starting to announce our presence to the wiki world.

Thematic Pilots

Dashboards now in place, can be cloned. Eg: Wikidata:WP EMEW/Monasteries/Items, Wikidata:WP EMEW/Monasteries/Properties

Monasteries: first stage of clean-up is to add coordinates and (modern civil) parishes, where missing, so items list together on dashboard. Then to compare against the list on English Wikipedia to ‘weed’ the list – eg identify modern organsiations & add ‘inception’ dates so the query doesn’t pick them up; investigate Grade II listed buildings (houses) that may be called “… Priory”, but should they actually be identified as a priory ?

Manors: first data drop from Jo Pugh (TNA) came in on Wednesday – basic info of existence & C19 ecclesiastical parish.  Y Will create new items for all of them, & (as a first cut) link them to nearby settlements where the parishes can be matched to these. These relationships will later be refined.

Identifiers (places)
  • EPNS DEEP
  • GB1900

Property request now filed for GB1900: Wikidata:Property_proposal/GB1900_ID : now in the process of community consideration.

EPNS: extract (i) wapentakes/hundreds, (ii) larger places, ready for matching.

People
  • Leland people
  • Politicians (MPs, Lords) 1509-1707

Work on Leland index of people underway by User:DrThneed

Briefing next week from Andrew Gray on data model and state of data for MPs (reasonably good, for info that exists), and Peers (not yet worked over systematically).

Information board for external ID properties in use for people of the period created at Wikidata:WP_EMEW/People/Identifiers

Documents
  • Saxton maps
  • U of Chicago "History of Cartography" series

Draft data model for Saxton maps now circulated. All Saxton engravers now have WD items. Some clean-up work done on Welsh historical counties. Metadata collection for Saxton maps is ongoing. WD items for Saxton maps in Burghley Atlas will be done in the next week (via several batch jobs, some passes may be later if modelling isn't agreed or new properties aren't available).

WD items for U of Chicago "History of Cartography" books series and online chapters relevant to VR to be created(stretch goal).

Cross-cutting
  • Counties
  • Sub-county divisions (hundreds, wapentakes, cantrefs etc)
  • Ecclesiastical parishes

WD currently has two different series for English counties, which haven’t been related each other. One series represents counties as ‘Ship of Theseus’ entities from 1066 to the present day, based on today’s ceremonial counties. The other (more recently created) series represents ‘historical counties’, defined by their borders in the 1880s, but still considered objects of current existence. The exact proper purposes and uses of the two series has not really been well established, & the ‘historical counties’ series in particular, although well linked to by the ‘historical county’ are not well populated with statements, nor well related to the ‘ceremonial county’ series (which are well-populated in statements), making the historical counties less useful than they should be in queries
Plan is to create dashboards to better reveal state of both series, and just how they are being used, and then start a community consultation with people who have worked on the series in the past, to try to get community agreement on just how the modelling should work, and how the different county items should be understood going forward.
