Annotated proof map of Northumberland from Lord Burghley's Atlas, ff.71v-72

Lord Burghley's Atlas (Q105468439) is a unique bound volume in the British Library (Royal MS 18 D III) combining a set of 35 coloured printer's proofs of maps from Saxton's Atlas of the Counties of England and Wales (Q27919282), prints of other maps of Scotland and Wales, 18 manuscript maps, and various lists of reference material, all annotated by hand, owned by William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley (Q354309) and updated by others for some years after his death.

The Viae Regiae project will be working extensively with this resource.

The combined VR and WD project teams will be developing a best-practices data model for creating items for each of Saxton's maps and each folio of the Burghley Atlas. That model will be documented here.

That model should be flexible enough to be used for other early Saxton maps in museum or library collections.

Questions

edit

Core questions about the Burghley data model can be collected here. Additional questions, discussion, and comments should be posted on the Burghley Atlas data model discussion page.

  •  Y Should Burghley's proof maps be considered a separate "map edition" of each map, or a proof of the first edition? > Modeled as separate editions.
  • How will we handle one-to-many and many-to-one relationships using "has part/part of"?
  •  Y How should we record the style of handwriting? > New property script style (P9302)
  •  Y How should we model the complex cartouches and other non-topological items on Saxton's maps? > New Property proposed has graphical element
