About edit

On February 23, 2015, a meeting will take place at the Natural History Museum, Berlin (Q233098) that builds on the submitted EINFRA-9-2015 proposal "Enabling Open Science: Wikidata for Research" and is intended to facilitate one or more follow-ups with a focus on Germany, as per #Concrete research ideas and proposed actions and #Potential funding lines.

Concrete research ideas and proposed actions edit

ID tag on a tree in Berlin
  • Building a "knowledge of life" database in Wikidata in a collaboration between professional and citizen scientists. Collect the traits/features/characters of relevant species. Application: identification tools for medicine, agriculture, border control, citizen science. Research: best practices for efficiency in the interaction, measures and processes to improve data quality, relative data quality comparisons. (Gregor Hagedorn)
  • In Berlin, all trees meeting certain criteria are numbered ("Stadtbäume"), and a lot of information about them is being collected systematically but only partially made open (e.g. map). A Wikibase instance could capture that information in a more structured way and also be expanded to cover other species living in the city, with excellent opportunities for public engagement and citizen science. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 01:13, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Due to several transcriptome analysis studies performed by us and collaboration partners we possess a large body of gene annotation information. We suggest to explore how Wikidata could be used to store, manipulate and represent genome and transcriptome information of microbial species. This would not only lead to more sustainable accessibility and improved re-usability of such results but would additionally offer members of the research community as well as other citizens the opportunity to improve gene annotations easily. There are similar initiatives ongoing and we first need to to assess their current status and compare their aims, ideas and needs with ours. --Konrad Foerstner (talk) 21:30, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Potential funding lines edit

Initially, we will consider the following funding lines of the German Research Foundation (Q707283):

  • "Digital publishing infrastructure" (de/en), which is aimed at research infrastructure providers (mainly outside universities).
    • In principle, the "Virtual Research Environments" funding line (de/ en) would be the closest match to the EU project, but it is focused on building new infrastructures and explicitly states "Projects to establish databases or enter data into existing infrastructures are not eligible for funding."
    • The new Merkblatt Infrastruktur für elektronische Publikationen und digitale Wissenschaftskommunikation (guidelines on infrastructure for electronic publications and digital research communication) mention that "publications" are to be understood "in the broadest possible sense", e.g. including through wikis, and that they can occur all along the research cycle.
      • Provisions for experimental projects ("experimentell ausgerichtete Projekte") to explore innovative approaches in research communication.
      • Focused on discipline-specific infrastructures.
  • Research Units/ Forschergruppen (cf. forms and guidelines)
    • aimed primarily at universities
    • up to nine partners collaborating on the exploration of a research topic
