Geronticus thackerayi

Could someone please take a quick look at Geronticus thackerayi (Q116698445) to see whether all is well? This is a little out of my wheelhouse. Pinging @Rdmpage who created the article that describes it. Cheers! Aluxosm (talk) 12:07, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Aluxosm I've had a quick look and made a couple of tweaks. I've added Index to Organism Names ID (P10420) so we have an external identifier (always handy to show that a thing exists somewhere else). I also removed your chosen parent taxon and added Geronticus (Q913200) which is the immediate parent of this species - parent taxon (P171) is always the closest parent (although "closest" may vary among classifications). I'm not sure that species nova (Q27652812) belongs where you've put it. I think this is best used to "tag" an article using main subject (P921) (as it is for Geronticus thackerayi, sp. nov. (Aves, Threskiornithidae), a new ibis from the hominin-bearing locality of Kromdraai (Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng, South Africa) (Q104453973), so personally I'd delete it from taxon name (P225). Lastly I've added subject has role (P2868) first valid description (Q1361864) to the original publication of this name, which I'm beginning to think is the best place to assert that a name was published by an article. Hope this is helpful. Rdmpage (talk) 13:49, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
@Rdmpage Very helpful indeed, thanks for the changes and the in depth explanation. Not sure how I managed to get the parent taxon mixes up, oops! I think I got the object has role = species nova thing from looking at Python regius but can't remember how I got to that specific combination so I've deleted it. Cheers again and sorry for the late reply! Aluxosm (talk) 15:12, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Should species templates be merged with article items?

Should Template:Boddaert, 1783 (Q28595222) be merged with the article that the template describes: Table des planches enluminéez d'histoire naturelle de M. D'Aubenton : avec les denominations de M.M. de Buffon, Brisson, Edwards, Linnaeus et Latham, precedé d'une notice des principaux ouvrages zoologiques enluminés (Q54799939)? I've just fixed an instance of this conflation (diff). Thanks, Aluxosm (talk) 12:21, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

They should not be merged, but they should be pointing to each other. --Lymantria (talk) 12:46, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
@Lymantria: Why not? It looks to me as though they should be merged. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:24, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: IMHO the instance of (P31) of both items say it all. Lymantria (talk) 15:31, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
With the current Wikidata data model, it would be impossible to accommodate the situation where a Wikipedia has both an article for the work and a template, as with Flora URSS (Q5862833) and Q15302782 both having links to the Russian Wikipedia. William Avery (talk) 17:42, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
