format constraint
editset the pattern to [1-9][0-9]*, so only numbers are allowed --Akkakk 23:55, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- leading zeros seem to be allowed, changed it to [0-9]+ --Akkakk 10:34, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
Format display
editI don't know much about this, but should it not be displayed as www.worldcat.org/oclc/XXXXXX, clickable? Littledogboy (talk) 22:49, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
- Support I also think that this should be link to WorldCat. --朝彦/Asahiko (talk) 21:51, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hm... When I added an OCLC it wasn't clickable at first, but became clickable when I reloaded. Well now I know how that works. --朝彦/Asahiko (talk) 21:55, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
Editions
editPerhaps "(but not individual edition (Q3331189)" should be removed from above. Different editions (and even different formats of the same edition) have different numbers. Hazmat2 (talk) 15:31, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
oclc links to several versions of a book
editI am getting a warning that my oclc link is being used by another entity. It is being used by the other entity properly. The oclc is a list of several hard copies of a book a couple which have been scanned and are available online. Q50852923 and Q51472682 --RaboKarbakian (talk) 20:58, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Different OCLC numbers for the same edition
editI have the reverse problem: There are in same cases (especially old books in German) different OCLC numbers for the same edition of the same book (all examples concern the same work, but different editions and volumes):
- First example Q56426615 – second edition of the second volume:
- 473154002: Ausführliches und möglichst vollständiges deutsch-lateinisches Lexicon oder Wörterbuch zur Übung in der lateinischen Sprache; Autor: Imman Joh Gerhard Scheller.
- Correctly the author name is not treated as part of the title of the edition.
- 1003957837: Imman. Joh.
- The author name is treated as part of the title ('Schellers' is the w:genitive of the name 'Scheller' - so in English it would be like: 'Imman. Joh. Gerhard Scheller’s book "Ausführliches und möglichst vollständiges Deutsch-Lateinisches Lexicon"' or 'the book of Imman. Joh. Gerhard Scheller 'Ausführliches und möglichst vollständiges Deutsch-Lateinisches Lexicon'".
- (By the way, contrary to OCLC, this volume has not "xxxx, 2839 pages". Rather it has xxxx pages + 2839 columns.)
- Second example Q56433224 – as well the second volume, but the first edition:
- 311252944: Imman. Joh.
(1984 Sp)
- In the second case the words 'ausführliches und möglichst vollständiges' from the title are lost and same pages are not counted; but in reality both OCLC numbers refer to same edition, as the identical number of columns (in German: 'Spalten') and the same year of publication etc. (Leipzig : Fritsch, 1784) indicate.
- Third example Q56379945 – the first volume of the first edition:
- 311984954: Imman. Joh. 1, Lateinisch-deutscher Theil
- Again, the author name is treated as part of the title.
[1], Latinische-deutscher Theil; Autor: Immanuel Johann Gerhard Scheller
- Correctly the author name is not treated as part of the title. However, "Latinische-deutscher Theil" is misspelled: rather it should be 'Latinisch-deutscher Theil'.
(For the structure of the entire work cfr.: Bitte prüfen und (Geschmacks)Urteile und andere Bewertungen abgeben. Further items should be created, especially for the 3rd edition.)
Type constraint: need an addition
editThis should allow items of type "newspaper". See, for example: Q7760062 -Pete F (talk) 01:33, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
- About 5,600 journals know their OCLC-Control nr. which is already correct to identify the journal in the Worldcat. Try it!
PREFIX psn: <http://www.wikidata.org/prop/statement/value-normalized/> SELECT ?journal ?journalLabel ?OCLC_Worldcat WHERE { SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en". } ?journal wdt:P31 wd:Q5633421. ?journal p:P243 ?OCLC_ID. ?OCLC_ID psn:P243 ?OCLC_Worldcat. }
- This OCLC-ID is also available in the journal metadata stored in the German Union Catalogue of Serials (Q186844). It's fully correct to make a restriction for books on the edition/manifestiation level, but for journals that won't work. Mfchris84 (talk) 11:36, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Mfchris84: I wish I could understand what you're trying to tell me, but I can't. I guess I lack the technical expertise. Are you able to make whatever correction you're suggesting to Q7760062? If I could see an example, maybe I would be able to do better with the dozens or hundreds of newspaper entries I expect to work on. -Pete F (talk) 19:24, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Peteforsyth: my aim was to underpin your statement, that we need OCLC control number (P243) for periodical literature. Even that journals in wikidata won't be modeled like books (with work, version/edition level and item level). Maybe @Pasleim: could explain his change on this property here. Mfchris84 (talk) 06:39, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, I see -- sorry to misunderstand. I'll keep an eye on the discussion. -Pete F (talk) 18:03, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Peteforsyth: I forgot to mention that I already added the type constraint class periodical (Q1002697). So actual there won't be type constraint warnings on oclc-id by newspapers.
- Just catching up with this somewhat belatedly -- OCNs are associated with everything that is in WorldCat, which means (in my opinion) they should not have a constraint at all. WorldCat has descriptions for anything that can and has been cataloged by a library, which goes well beyond print materials and could even include things like statues and spaceships. I added maps as a workaround but I think that long term the constraint should be removed. What do you think, move this over to project chat? Merrilee (talk) 04:43, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
This property should allow albums
editFor example, Mockroot (an album) is in the OCLC at [1], but currently Q63927920 has a type constraint warning for the OCLC statement. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 12:47, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
- I have boldly added "music album" to the type constraint. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 13:11, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
- also done this for EPs (Q169930) 23:34, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Posters also need to be added.
editThis should allow items of type "poster" Lots of posters have been cataloged by libraries and are in OCLC. For instance, Q99204892 is in OCLC with a control number of 1033999872.
Control = Accession number
editI've been using and adding to OCLC for about 20 years. OCLC itself refers to this property as an accession number. Why do you call it a control number? - Kosboot (talk) 00:36, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
Another property constraint problem
editDatabases, not just "version, edition, or translation ; periodical ; individual copy of a book" are cataloged and so can have OCLC numbers (OCN). I just added an OCN to an item for a database, Eighteenth Century Collections Online (Q5349070). – The preceding unsigned comment was added by BethGuay (talk • contribs).
- And I got one for Internet encyclopedia WikiFur (Q84316379) when I submitted it for an ISSN. Perhaps (indirect) subclasses of encyclopedia (Q5292) or reference work (Q13136) should be added? GreenReaper (talk) 23:26, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
Remove the single value constraint
editCurrently there is a single value constraint on this property, with the separator of distribution format. This is not adequate. There are often numerous records in OCLC that describe the exact same manifestation of a publication. This happens because there may be different rules used to describe a resource, or libraries enter duplicate records, or an agency with a different language of cataloging (e.g., an American library and a library in Spain) contribute different records because the notes and other descriptive details are in different languages). In these cases, one edition/manifestation can have multiple records in OCLC and we should be able to record all of the OCLC numbers in a single Wikidata item. Here's an example: Crown and Realm: A Review of the British Empire, its Builders and Rulers: Souvenir of the Coronation of King George V (1911 Edition) (Q108576517). All of the OCLC control numbers in this item represent records in OCLC that are all for the 1911 edition of this publication. You cannot necessarily record one single best OCLC number. There is no way to use the separator qualifier to make these different numbers validate in Wikidata. They are all the same hardback distribution format, just cataloged on different OCLC records by different libraries. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 22:28, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
OCLC is not a number anymore
editOCLC links are now in hex https://entities.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJfcHGvWPxbHhBXP8XwQv3.html how should this be addressed and is there any corelation between the old format and new? Back ache (disabletalk) 10:31, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
