- Discussion
- Comment The example given uses https://www.nga.org/cms/home/governors/past-governors-bios/page_new_jersey/col2-content/main-content-list/title_edwards_edward.default.html which, given the formatter URL, implies a value of
page_new_jersey/col2-content/main-content-list/title_edwards_edward.default.html

OpposeThe ID and formatter URL are incompatible - when I plug "Governor Edward Irving Edwards" into the formatter it produces a 404. I'm not convinced there's any actual external ID involved here. Use described at URL (P973) for this. ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:38, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
- As Andy pointed out I malformed the formatter, sorry, can you try again. --RAN (talk) 16:47, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): "https://www.nga.org/cms/home/governors/past-governors-bios/Governor Edward Irving Edwards.default.html" is no better. Do you really intend that long string Andy listed as the identifier? ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:37, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

- Comment Just a technical note: It seems that URL pattern varies. Some have really short urls for which
https://www.nga.org/cms/$1
could work. Maybe eventually the longer ones will have that format. Alternatively one could go for URL datatype.

@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): Currently the formatter Url doesn't produce the links you listed in the examples and doesn't work. Given that you haven't reacted to the request by ArthurPSmith, do you still want this property? ChristianKl (✉) 21:47, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
- It looks like they have changed their URL format since I started the nomination. Let me look at their new system and make sure that the transition is complete for their entire archive. --RAN (talk) 05:19, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
- You could add the old ones too and just deprecated them once new ones come out.

- @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): I have updated the id's in the example section of the proposal template to follow the statements you suggest here - is this actually the ID format you are proposing? ArthurPSmith (talk) 16:25, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
- It appears correct. --RAN (talk) 16:32, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
- I don't think that would work for the shorter ones I had seen. I think they were just
https://www.nga.org/cms/john-doe

- Support Ok, I struck out my oppose comment above, this seems fine. However, if there are some that use a different URL pattern as Jura suggests (do we have a specific example?) that may be another issue. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:22, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Url format
edit- https://www.nga.org/cms/home/governors/past-governors-bios/$1.default.html
- $1=page_california/col2-content/main-content-list/title_davis_gray
- $1=page_new_jersey/col2-content/main-content-list/title_livingston_william
- https://www.nga.org/cms/home/governors/past-governors-bios/page_new_jersey/col2-content/main-content-list/title_livingston_william.default.html
- https://www.nga.org/cms/home/governors/past-governors-bios/page_california/col2-content/main-content-list/title_davis_gray.default.html
The url format is complicated, but a bot should be able to load them to Wikidata.
Question
editDo you think it would be better as "National Governors Association biography URL" and we skip the complicated formatter information? We do the full url for Linkedin profiles. --RAN (talk) 23:12, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
- That's definitely an option, it would still be linked, and it wouldn't be much longer than what is being proposed now. Plus it can be adapted if there are multiple URL schemes (as Jura is concerned about) or if they change their scheme later. I think I favor using URL datatype then here. - @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ), ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2, ChristianKl, ArthurPSmith, Jura1, Pigsonthewing: I have marked this as ready as it looks like the issues have been resolved (and the urls have been stable for a few months, which seems to be a grand achievement for the administrators of this website…) − Pintoch (talk) 10:38, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): actually I did not realize that the English label and the English description are the same, therefore marking as not ready. − Pintoch (talk) 10:32, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
