Planned useI'd like to use this property to indicate the number of people donating blood at least once during humanitarian activities of an aid organization. Is important specify the year within which the declaration is valid with a qualifier point in time (P585).
See alsonumber of volunteers (P6125)

Motivation edit

At the moment i could add for a person the role of blood donor, but for an organization the number cannot be added; i'm proposing this property because i would like to add the number of blood donors of the national Red Cross and Red Crescent society (Q1968122) avaiable on Federation-wide Databank and Reporting System (FDRS). Discussion edit

  • The example that list the numbers without any regard for the time frame for which the statement is true seem questionable. ChristianKl21:58, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • sorry, i didn't add, but for each data about the number of donors, the period within which the declaration is valid should be specified with a qualifier point in time (P585) (about Italian Red Cross example, is important add 'point in time' to specify '2018' as valid data). Are you agree? LiaFla 11:21 24 November 2020 (UTC)
    • Yes, specifying that we want to store yearly data is important. It makes it clear how the property is intended to be used. Yearly data is likely fine while daily data would be too much statements. ChristianKl13:32, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • thank you, i just added it in "planned use". LiaFla 19:07 24 November 2020 (UTC)

  •   Oppose Organizations like Red Cross may have had thousands of blood drives a year, which is more data than Wikidata can handle for the item of an organization. The kind of modeling which I would imagine is a Wikidata item for individual blood drives, then maybe "number of participants" or "number of volunteers" on that item. I support inclusion of this data in Wikidata, but I think blood drives like the ones in the examples are worth modeling independently of the organization. Blue Rasberry (talk) 22:08, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@LiaFla: I am not sure that I understand. Can you please tell me how many times you expect to see this property on an item like Swiss Red Cross (Q456988)? Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:39, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bluerasberry: I would like to use this property just like member count (P2124) on item National Coalition Party (Q304191): add a new value specifying the year for which the number of blood donors expressed is valid. --LiaFla (talk) 16:43, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@LiaFla: Okay, I suppose that various organizations will have annual reports of how many people per year donate blood, and then this number captures an annual report. That seems responsible. Does this mean that if there is a smaller blood drive, like one which lasts for a month at a university and which does not have an annual report, then this property would not apply to that kind of blood drive?
Should we rename this to "annual number of blood donors" so that people will not try to model their local blood drives, and instead only seek out top-level data from the larger organizations? Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:55, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bluerasberry: I agree, we could add in this description that it is a total data of a year. Could small associations add the total number for the year, even if the campaign lasted only one month, but the value is valid for the year, right? --LiaFla (talk) 08:01, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@LiaFla: Small associations are unlikely to make annual reports mentioning blood drives. If they do a one month campaign, they might report the results of that campaign, but Wikidata reviewers will not be able to determine whether the organization did another campaign in that year. Also, suppose that a student organization did a blood drive at a university and reported a one-month campaign, then the university did multiple blood drives and reported all the outcomes in an annual report. It is going to be unclear whether the student blood drive is part of the campaign by university administration, as sometimes students and staff collaborate but often they do not. I think there would be confusion and low quality data if we tried to capture and cite small campaign and event reports. If we only accepted annual reports from large organizations, then I think we are more likely to find quality data.
What do you know and what can you say about available data? I trust large well funded organizations like Red Cross to report, but I have doubts about self reporting or volunteer reporting. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:04, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. At the moment, about the number of blood donors, I only found info on the official websites of the national red cross societies (from the reports published for each year). LiaFla (talk) 20:50, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
