Motivation

We have around 58k items with instance of (P31): sports season of a sports club (Q1539532) type. It is currently difficult to relate them to the sports competitions which the teams/clubs they are about competed at during their season.

Alternatively league or competition (P118) could be broadened in scope (domain and values), as it is currently defined too narrow for this purpose. Another alternative would be to use the generic facet of (P1269), but since this would also need to hold the team/club which played the season (see parallel proposal Wikidata:Property proposal/season of club or team), this approach seems to be undesirable. —MisterSynergy (talk) 06:05, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

Support The property should only added to item that are sports season of a sports club (Q1539532), as it said above. Not to teams items. We are using participant in (P1344) to teams items. Xaris333 (talk) 07:18, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  •   Comment A step further might be that "Bayern in the 2010 final" would use league or competition (P118) for "2010 final" too? I'm not really convinced by this approach. A possible alternative could be to use significant event (P793).
A general issue with sports items is that they relate to articles useful in Wikipedia, but not necessarily as items for Wikidata. We could just ignore these countless items, but attempting to place them in a basic structure can make it easier to navigate them.

    • I agree that items with types such as sports season of a sports club (Q1539532) have a somehwat Wikidata-incompatible nature, but they are here in great numbers and I think it is even worth to equip them with actual data beyond basic organization. Sure, we have arbitrary access, but in Wikipedia it is much simpler to pull data from a connected item rather than collecting data from various different items. However, without a basic structure—which this proposal is aiming for—it is difficult to add anything else … —MisterSynergy (talk) 06:35, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
