Er zal een Wikidata datathon worden gehouden om de Wikidata's 12e verjaardag in India (Q668) te vieren. Gedurende de maanden oktober-november zullen de leden van WikiProject India en verschillende gemeenschappen in India de 12e verjaardag van Wikidata vieren door middel van een reeks evenementen en activiteiten die zich richten op het verbeteren van de inhoud in Wikidata en het verbeteren van het gebruik van India-gerelateerde eigenschappen op Wikidata. Thema

Overview

To mark the 12th birthday of Wikidata the members of WikiProject India (Q11037573) in Wikidata organized and celebrated Wikidata's 12th birthday with a remarkable month-long event held in October and November 2024. It brought together the Indian Wikimedia communities, including members of WikiProject India, regional groups, and individual contributors, to improve and enhance India-related content on Wikidata. The primary objectives of the Datathon were to expand the use of India-related Wikidata properties, propose and improve relevant properties, enrich items by adding statements, qualifiers, and references, and improve items with labels and descriptions in multiple languages. Additionally, there was a strong emphasis on adding coordinate location (P625) and image (P18) to enhance the visual and locational aspects of the items.

To make the campaign more engaging, each week was themed around specific topics, with communities taking the lead to ensure focused contributions. The first week highlighted Hospitals and Health Centers in India and was led by the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group (Q57414284). The second week focused on Dams and Reservoirs, led by the Karavali Wikimedians (Q28953869). The third week saw contributions related to Persons in Indian Politics, led by Punjabi Wikimedians (Q23008463), and with a special focus on Indian Muslim Academia and History from October 29-31 led by Deoband Community Wikimedia (Q113125660). Schools in India were the focus of the fourth week, led by the Tamil community, while the fifth week concentrated on Music Albums, particularly those used in movies, led by the Odia Wikimedians User Group (Q35214529).

Each theme saw significant improvements and advancements. During the week dedicated to Hospitals and Health Centers, new health center items and medical facilities were created, enhanced with geographic coordinates, and made publicly accessible, providing valuable data for all. Additionally, a new Wikidata property was proposed and successfully implemented during the period of campaign, further expanding the structure of health-related data on the platform. In the Dams and Reservoirs focus, key properties were updated, including Project Identification Codes, locations, capacities, inception dates, reservoir creation dates, lengths, and operator information, significantly improving the completeness and accuracy of data for these critical infrastructure elements. The Political Figures theme contributed to enriching Wikidata with details such as political affiliations, languages spoken, educational backgrounds, and other biographical information, offering a more comprehensive portrait of notable individuals in the political sphere. Schools theme week led to the enhancement of data for educational institutions, adding critical information such as establishment dates, locations, school codes, and more, helped to create a more detailed and organized educational database. Finally, the Music Albums week focused on creating and improving entries related to music albums featured in films, as well as refining album classifications by language and genre. This effort not only enhanced the existing records but also contributed to the cultural richness of Wikidata, offering a deeper insight into the intersection of music and cinema.

As part of Wiki Loves Onam 2024 campaign a workshop was organized for students and Wikimedians. The college students and Wikimedians has participated in the data-a-thon for improving the data related to Health centers in India.

A special program introduced Wikidata to school students, fostering digital literacy and global collaboration. A week-long training program for students from Government Higher Secondary School Nangur in Tamil Nadu marked the first initiative of its kind in the state. Conducted after school hours, the sessions taught students to explore and edit Wikidata, with guidance on contributing data, such as school IDs for specific regions.

Outcomes

The Datathon recorded impressive outcomes, including 1.1K items created, 14.3K unique items edited, and a total of 24.7K edits. Participants added 21K references, enhancing the credibility of the information, and garnered nearly 23K item views. A total of 57 editors registered for the event and 50 participants contributed to the event, with notable contributions from editors like SijiR, who edited 7.1K unique items, and Athulvis, who made edits to 1.4K unique items. Other contributors like Kuldeepburjbhalaike, Ssgapu22 and Gnoeee also made significant impacts, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the campaign.

The India Datathon 2024 showcased the strength of collective action within the Wikimedia movement, achieving remarkable results in both the quantity and quality of India-related content in Wikidata. By engaging communities through targeted themes and simpler tasks, the Datathon set a new standard for collaborative efforts. The success of this initiative paves the way for future campaigns, inspiring broader participation, collaborations and further contributions to open knowledge about India.

Together, these focused community collaboration efforts have significantly enriched Wikidata, broadening its scope and utility for diverse fields of knowledge.
