Merging items edit

Hallo Lugnuts,

For merging items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It has an option "Request deletion for extra items on RfD" to automatically place a request to delete the emptied page. This way of nominating makes it a lot easier for the admins to process the requests.

With regards, -      - (Cycn/talk) 09:25, 27 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

(Cc @Cycn) Just thought I would butt in to point out that deletion after merge should be the rare exception, rather than the rule. If there's any chance that an external site may have a reference to an identifier, we want to make sure that we keep the redirect. Redirects are cheap and preserve the history, and it's not as if we are ever going to reuse an identifier for a new concept. Cheers, Bovlb (talk) 18:36, 23 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Removal of death claims edit

If anyone is wondering why I'm removing many claims of death dates, please see this:

Duplicate items edit

Hello! Please check if an item already exists before creating it. I just merged Christophe Blanchet (Q30348928) and Christophe Blanchet (Q30437598), Philippe Chassaing (Q30431548) and Philippe Chassaing (Q30434779). In both cases, you created the later ones. Thanks. — Envlh (talk) 15:13, 21 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Nikolaos Kaloudis edit

Hey Lugnuts, I am wondering whether this merge of Nikos Kaloudis (Q17401784) into Nikolaos Kaloudis (Q15987527) was correct or not. Do we have any evidence that the association football player and the water polo player are the same person? —MisterSynergy (talk) 22:14, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Looks like there's two profiles on Sports Reference with the same name/DOB, but each having info on one sport and not the other. I think the EN WP article has all of this info merged into one article. Drop me a note on my EN WP talkpage if you have any further questions about this (more likely to see it!) Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 09:52, 2 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Let's continue the discussion here—it does not matter if you need a while to see new comments.
I was already assuming that you (and others) are claiming identity for the persons based on the "same name and year of birth" situation. However, if there is really no other evidence for the identity, I find this a little vague to be honest. Would you mind if we continue with two separate items, one with the elwiki article and the other with itwiki and enwiki, until there is better evidence available? There is indeed some likelihood that this is one person, but at this point I am really not convinced at all… Thanks for your input, —MisterSynergy (talk) 16:18, 2 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi. I've asked for more help with an editor who knows about this sort of thing. Hopefully have an answer soon. Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 11:07, 4 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MisterSynergy: - Paul has posted a reply on his talkpage - "while it seems very likely that they are the same individual, they have never been able to prove conclusively that this is the case. So, probably the same, but no proof unfortunately". Happy to create a new article on EN WP for the waterpolo player for now, if you wish. Please let me know. Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 08:53, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I think it would be the best to do it as the only source (Sports-Reference) does. Once you have an article for the waterpolo player, I can undo the merge here and we continue with two items. We can link them to indicate that they *might* be the same person. —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:10, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MisterSynergy: - Apologies for the delay. The water polo bio has now been created on EN WP. Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 08:41, 9 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Cool, thanks. The items have been separated as well, and there are some additional identifiers for both of them. They also mutually link to each other with said to be the same as (P460) to express that they *might* be the same person. —MisterSynergy (talk) 09:57, 9 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Please de-activate enwiki import script edit

Hi Lugnuts,

There seem to be a malfunction with your "helper script". It keeps overwriting valid descriptions with short descriptions from enwiki. Please de-activate it. --- Jura 14:37, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Jura1:, @Pamputt: - Hi. I don't edit Wikidata directly, I add content via the EN WP and rarely visit Wikidata directly. However, I've just seen this as I was trying to add an interwiki link to Américo Simonetti that I just created on EN (they have an ES entry). If you look at my contributions, I've edited/imported more than 30,000 items from EN WP to here without issue. Please take a look through the past few days' worth of edits to get a feel for what I'm importing. It seems a bit harsh to block based on a couple of edits one editor disagrees with. Maybe reverting those would be better? I can't fathom the unblock process on here, so apologies for that, but I'd be grateful if you could look into this. Thanks! Lugnuts (talk) 17:23, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

I suspected that you don't seem to be following the edits here on Wikidata. You hadn't responded to any revert and kept doing more similar edits.
Can you de-activate the overwriting option? The default option of the script doesn't overwrite.
I don't see a problem with merely adding your descriptions instead of blank ones. --- Jura 17:27, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi Lugnuts, I've just unblocked you. I decide to block you because, as said by Jura1, you made non-valuable modifications and did not answered to the message let here. The block does not mean that you are a vandal, it just prevents to continue automatic edits that are not valuable. For the technical issue, Jura1 explains what is wrong, so please check what you can do on your side to avoid this happens again in the future. Pamputt (talk) 18:11, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Pamputt: I'm not sure if they actually addressed the problem, but I guess we will find out soon. Not sure why they'd expect that we should just clean up behind them or discuss the edits on some other website. --- Jura 18:14, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Pamputt: - thanks for this. I don't know what is defined as a "non-valuable modification(s)" or what are edits that are "not valuable". ONE editor didn't like the short descriptions I was adding here. ONE. That's fine, I don't expect to please every single editor. Please take a look at the information that is being imported with my edits. I've been importing data via EN WP for about a year, and this is the first time it's an issue. I don't pull through blank summaries, but add data to Wikidata, or tidy up existing summary descriptions. I've also put a note at the top of this page for the best way to contact me if you have any further questions. Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 18:31, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Lugnuts: to talk about the point I described as "non-valuable" modifications, let's take this example. Could you tell how "1940 film" is better than "1940 film by Lester Orlebeck"? The goal of the descriptions is to disambiguate two elements with the same label. So, if two movies with the name title (Pioneers of the West) have been released in 1940 (I do not know whether it is the case for that specific example), the description before your change is better because it may help better to understand which movie is about this item. That is why your modifications are not "valuable". And so I would also prefer you change that, this mean you can add short description only if no description is present yet. If the "problem" has been seen only know, it does not mean it is a good practice. Anyway, if you persist, please start a discussion on the project chat to explain your point of view and then to get more comments for the community. Pamputt (talk) 19:11, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
The description you overwrite is the preferred descriptions for film items per WikiProject Movies. It's the recommended way for years.
You may need to activate "Cross-wiki notifications: Show notifications from other wikis" at enwiki, if you don't get notified about comments on your talk page with questions and/or reverts to your edits at Wikidata that need to be adddressed at Wikidata. The simplest solution would be to click "Save changes to Wikidata only when no Wikidata description exists" on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Shortdesc_helper_settings_screenshot.png --- Jura 19:26, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Right, I've changed the settings on EN WP. Ironic that Jura1 complains about using a script, when they're making hundreds of edits every few minutes in this fashion. Maybe someone should check their contributions to see if they are "non-valuable modification(s)". Lugnuts (talk) 08:03, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Of course, the flip side is edits like this now don't updated here. @Jura1: - fix it here. Lugnuts (talk) 10:05, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
