Q5395595

Hi, how to see this description in Q5395595? --Termininja (talk) 20:19, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

The api shows everything. Multichill (talk) 09:38, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
Ok, this is great, but how to start this thing, is there some button, link? --Termininja (talk) 13:58, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
And the 2nd question: When I see "value:Februari 1933", how to remove it? --Termininja (talk) 14:00, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
Found it, go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets and enable "labellister". You should be able to see more languages. Multichill (talk) 18:26, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Wow, this is great. I found also many other interesting tools. Thank you. :) --Termininja (talk) 16:49, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Invalid commons links

Hi, some errors: [1], [2], [3], [4]. Have you planes to fix these error types? — Ivan A. Krestinin (talk) 05:47, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

  • Please do not restore invalid links: [5]. — Ivan A. Krestinin (talk) 20:43, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
    • Not the best category, but it's a valid link. Why would you remove that? Multichill (talk) 20:50, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
      • So I was thinking. We have plenty cases where we have an article is about a specific topic ("Salyut 1"), but links to a more general category on Commons ("Category:Salyut") because a more specific category is not available. It would be nice to mark these cases with some sort of qualifier saying "yes we know this is a more general category, that's why we tagged it". Now just figure out what qualifier to use. Do you agree with this approach? Multichill (talk) 09:38, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
        • I do not understand suggested approach, sorry. In commonscat template these cases are marked using the second parameter, for example {{commonscat|Salyt|Салют}}. Cards are more problematic case, for example ru:Template:Река. Cards have no analogs of the commonscat's second parameter. Usually only specific commons category is placed to card, not more general category. I think we must separate specific Commons category and more general categories, for example use two different properties for these cases. Or do not move more general categories to Wikidata and stay its in Wikipedia. — Ivan A. Krestinin (talk) 15:52, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
        • Hi, again, please stop your bot until the problem is not solved. Bot add invalid links to cards again: Q2977085, Q261052,... Could you do not import links from commonscat templates with non-empty second parameter? — Ivan A. Krestinin (talk) 19:14, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hoofdwacht, Haarlem

1 and 2 :-) odder (talk) 23:27, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

Also, the article got nominated for DYK on the Polish Wikipedia today, and will hopefully be featured on the main page in a few days' time :) odder (talk) 15:40, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
Great, that's really nice to hear! Multichill (talk) 19:04, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
And it's on the main page, with a picture! go check it out! odder (talk) 22:59, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
That's pretty awesome! Great Job Odder. Multichill (talk) 05:10, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Commons category

You are doing a great work by mass importing links to Commons, but you are also mass importing errors. Some errors need to be fixed by humans, but other ones can be easily detected by the bot before uploading:

  • Links to deleted categories in Commons.
  • Links to redirected categories in Commons (e. g. categories with {{category redirect}}).

It would be great if your bot could check and not to upload such errors. It would be even greater if somebody checked the already uploaded links to clean this kind of errors - which are quite common.--Pere prlpz (talk) 14:42, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Guess what, I'm already doing that :-)
When I just started it had some bugs, but now it's fully operational. It checks (and follows) redirect and deleted categories (if someone bothered to set a decent edit summary). It will skip disambiguation categories too.
Btw, en:Category:Commons category Wikidata tracking categories is very useful for hunting down wrong links. Multichill (talk) 16:54, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
I know. We have ca:Categoria:Manteniment plantilla commonscat and I collected ca:Usuari:PereBot/Commonscat_i_Wikidata to ease the work of checking.
Besides than checking before uploading, are you going to check the links that are already uploaded?--Pere prlpz (talk) 18:19, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
I'll first focus on getting stuff imported here. Later on I might write something to compare links here with Commons every once in a while. Multichill (talk) 18:23, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi Maarten, another case that can be fixed, if you have not it in mind yet: underscores should be replaced with spaces before importing. Great work. --Vriullop (talk) 13:39, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
I might already be doing that. I'm using commonscat.py and I'm pretty sure underscores get replaced with spaces somewhere. Did you happen to find a case where my bot added underscores? Multichill (talk) 13:42, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
Two examples: Q89917, Q157968, but there are more cases with other bots involved. --Vriullop (talk) 14:25, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
Judging from the date these are early edits when the checking did not function properly. Did you happen to find recent ones? Multichill (talk) 19:36, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
I have not found any recent one. --Vriullop (talk) 07:51, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Pigeon breeds and Taxa

Would you please stop to ad Taxa-informations to domestic pigeon breeds? Maybe do ad P279:Q5433715 or/and P279:Q204179 to items with Property:P303 (ELRT-number). maybe

aswell, but please stop adding Taxa-informations to domestic pigeon breeds. My last information was that domestic animals are no taxa in general.

If there is a language-version who wants to ad these informations in a breeds box, they can look at the domestic pigeon for that. --PigeonIP (talk) 13:34, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

As you see in the source field, we use this on the Dutch Wikipedia so I don't have any intent on not importing it. Multichill (talk) 14:46, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
You use it, because it is the taxa of the domesticated pigeon/feral pigeon. show me a reliable source, preferable the ICZN, naming the Pauwstaart or any other breed Columba livia f. domestica. Even breeding associations don't do it.
Breeders do have an own rank and sorting system for breeds of domesticated animals. for example: the Pauwstaart/Faintail is a member of the fantail-pigeon-familiy along with the Garden Fantail, the Indian Fantail and others. with Australian breeders the Fantail pigeons are part of the Asian feather and voice pigeons, along with the trumpeter pigeons. in Europe they are Structure pigeons, a group that includes the nl:Oud-Hollandse Kapucijn. In the US they are "only" Fancy pigeons. Structure pigeons, are in Europe and Asian feather and voice pigeons in Australia groups of the Fancy pigeons. But these groupings are not strongly hierarchical. The Gelderse slenk for example is a member of the "Spielflugtauben" (German), along with the Groninger Slenk and the "Ringschläger" (a group of four pigeon breeds). "Spielflugtauben" belong to the large group of "Tumblers and Highflyers". And these are fancy pigeons – but not only. They are also performing/sporting pigeons and there are sporting events to show which of them is flying best.
And last but not least: races of different groups may be genetically more "identical" than breeds of the same group. And there are scientists who presume, that different breeds are decendents of different subspecies or in some cases even results of crossbreeds with other pigeon-species. So breeds are more complicated than a (biological/zoological) taxobox is able to show.
The Pauwstaart is no member of any zoological-ranking. The ICZN stops with species or subspecies, breeds are no part of this system. --PigeonIP (talk) 05:12, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Bot and Mr Oldfield

diff. The family of these rabbits is Mr Oldfield Thomas? Could you please add basic validity test if you add information with you bot? FelixReimann (talk) 13:42, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

That's a nice one, someone (ab)used the family field in the template to also list the author. I'm afraid it's next to impossible to check before import. I was thinking about adding some constraint checking afterwards. For example, if item A has a Property:P71 claim, the linked item B should have a claim Property:P105 with contents Q35409. That way the quality of the data can be improved. Multichill (talk) 14:44, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Perhaps, you could also cross check another linked wikipedia and add information only if the wps confirm to each other. FelixReimann (talk) 17:47, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
