Wikidata:Wikinews/Development. --Infovarius (talk) 21:33, 18 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

--Russian Rocky (talk) 23:50, 19 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
--Infovarius (talk) 10:57, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Infovarius: Спасибо. --sasha (krassotkin) 11:41, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
--sasha (krassotkin) 11:41, 21 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews LGBT vs homosexuality edit

Hi. I notice you moved several wikinews links from LGBT (Q17884) to homosexuality (Q6636).

This raises a somewhat awkward issue.

The trouble is that from a purely Wikidatan, ontological perspective, the move you made seems plausible; but if the purpose of such links (from Wikidata items to Wikinews pages) is to generate useful interwikis on the Wikinews pages, then the move is counterproductive. The category hierarchies on different Wikinewses are arranged differently in lots of subtle ways; I won't invite trouble by naming some of the difficult cases I'm familiar with, but in this particular case, there is a simple solution — for purposes of interwikis. All of the Wikinews categories involved, the ones associated with "LGBT" and the ones associated with "homosexuality", should interwiki to each other. It's just pointlessly damaging to the Wikinews projects to deprive their readers of interwikis between, for example, n:en:Category:LGBT and n:fr:Catégorie:Homosexualité, which are clearly the closest analogs to each other on English and French Wikinews.

The simplest solution I see is to link all of these things from LGBT (Q17884), which is (for most purposes) the more general of the two topics. It would make less sense to link all of them from homosexuality (Q6636), since that is apparently (for most purposes) a narrower topic than the LGBT topic categories. The third option would be to manually provide all the individual point-to-point interwikis using local interwikis on the projects (which will be rather awkward in the short term, although in the long run I hope to provide facilities that would make it practical). --Pi zero (talk) 22:04, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps, the impending trouble is when some Wikinews language versions eventually get both categories, Category:LGBT and Category:Homosexuality. It is important to decide whether such Wikinews categories should correspond to each other or to Wikipedia articles of the same name. As far as I have been informed, the current unofficial consensus in Wikidata:Wikinews/Development prioritizes the second, and is strongly in favor of Wikipedia readers.
I personally have no objection against your suggestion. You can merge them as you wish, but make sure to share your rationale with the community in Wikidata talk:Wikinews to help approach the ultimate solution.--Russian Rocky (talk) 16:18, 24 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Those are interesting thoughts; thanks.

(Starting to think these things through... The point about Wikipedia articles versus Wikipedia categories seems largely orthogonal to this one. That's about correspondences between namespaces on different projects, whereas this is about correspondences between topics on different projects. In all cases, the uncomfortable truth is that interwikis are not properly an equivalence relation, but rather a directed graph with some surprisingly weak constraints. It's entirely possible the most appropriate use of interwikis could have several pages on one project all linking to the same page on another project; but the way the software currently uses wikidata for interwikis does not support that.) --Pi zero (talk) 23:47, 24 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

nlwikinews edit

Has been closed and locked for quite some time. You shouldn't be adding links to that graveyard. Multichill (talk) 21:15, 24 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the information. I will do other things.--Russian Rocky (talk) 22:26, 24 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Outline edit

Hi Russian _Rocky, similar to topic's main Wikimedia portal (P1151), there is a proposal at Wikidata:Property_proposal/Wikimedia_outline. I thought you might be interested.
