Discussion
- Oppose The IDs in the examples are not for the works, but for particular editions. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:58, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, indeed they are Amazon products, like iTunes IDs are related to Apple products and Spotify too. I don't see any problem --★ → Airon 90 12:13, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Airon90: It might be worthwhile for you to read https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Sources#Books . It explain what we mean with book (Q571) and (and what, @ChristianKl:? Mahir256 (talk) 13:22, 29 June 2018 (UTC))

- Comment This was rejected once before here: Wikidata:Property proposal/Amazon Standard Identification Number. I believe the main problem is amazon.com is US-only; the shops in other countries use different ID's. ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:43, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Support It's not US-only. Amazon uses the same ASIN over their different websites see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Standard_Identification_Number. I think the property name should be ASIN (or Amazon Standard Identification Number) given that's what the identifier is commonly called. I think this is very diferent than OLX.eg ID because the number is for many ebooks the only good authority control number. The fact that the number is notable enough to have a EnWiki article also makes it very different from the OLX.eg ID. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 09:56, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
- Comment Perennially there have been people who have come to Wikidata:Project chat asking about (starting) product ontologies; this may be a safe way to begin working on them, though I am concerned about when products are taken off Amazon and their IDs are no longer usable to find more information about them. Mahir256 (talk) 13:29, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Mahir256: If an ebook gets unpublished by Amazon it might still be useful to have information about the ASIN of the product. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 15:45, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

- Comment Why would Milk (Q201687) link to B001RU311W and not B001PSULSM? I actually like the idea of this property, but I assume that for something like Milk (Q201687) it would actually contain several values. I don't think that's inherently an issue, but perhaps if we added a qualifier constraint of distribution format (P437) (at least for media) that would be acceptable? - Support Amazon's ASINs are also used for their App Store which has thousands of apps. That alone would make it a useful identifier, though some things are clearly not so suitable for use as an external ID on Wikidata. (i.e. dozens of third party listings for the same item). Lewis Hulbert (talk) 23:26, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
- Support Ok, the arguments against this now don't seem super-strong; I've updated the label and marked this as ready. ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:51, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
