Motivation

edit

The Cutting Room Floor (Q55635148) is a wiki dedicated to content cut from video games − with current 15K+ articles. Quite some usage on English Wikipedia. Their data-model is per-platform-realization, hence one of our Q7889 entry may map to more than one entry.

It also has a Proto: namespace for prototypes, probably not notable here in general (with the occasional exception, see example 5). Being a MediaWiki website, it also has a category system so we could also link Final Fantasy (Q12391356)Category:Final Fantasy series or Category:GameCube games (Q8789750)Category:GameCube_games)

Discussion

edit
If you want it as an external identifier, maybe we should have separate items for the versions of the games on different game systems, as they have different ID's here? ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:20, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ArthurPSmith: Thanks for your comment! That situation is not uncommon, many external videogame IDs link to games-as-platform-realization rather than games-as-work − eg GameFAQs game ID (P4769), Metacritic ID (P1712), UVL game ID (P7555), OpenRetro Game Database ID (P7683), TheGamesDB game ID (P7622), OGDB game title ID (P7564)….
Adopting a more complex data-model, with potentially items for each platform-realization, is something some editors are thinking about very seriously, and we may end up doing that… But deciding on that will need a wide discussion, that has not quite started yet. So, personnally, I would agree (and part of my master-plan is to piggy-back on identifiers such as this one to do it), but we may or may not end up doing it.   Support Valuable site definitely worth including. The split-by-platform debate can be held later; no reason for it to hold up adding TCRF. –IagoQnsi (talk) 16:16, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
