Wikidata:WikiProject Conflation

WikiProject Conflation

WikiProject Conflation is an effort to detangle conflated items in Wikidata.

Conflation is the state of an entity representing more than one thing.

For example, if an item such as Google (Q95) has instance of (P31)website (Q35127)and instance of (P31)company (Q783794), then it is considered conflated because the entity represents both a website (Q35127) and a company (Q783794) when they are in reality two separate things and should have two separate items (Google (Q95) and Google Search (Q9366)).

All types of Wikidata entities can be considered conflated, including items, properties, and lexemes. This project will focus on identifying and fixing conflated items. Conflated items contribute to conceptual ambiguity, one of the key problems identified by Wikidata reusers in a recent survey.

Untangling conflated items can be simple or complex, depending on the number of sitelinks and statements on the conflated item. Complex items may require domain expertise or familiarity with best practices established by other Wikidata WikiProjects such as WikiProject Books, WikiProject Taxonomy, or WikiProject Medicine.
