Wikidata:WikiProject European Bathing Waters

Summertime and Europe starts to open up, lets add bathing waters to Wikidata

More than 27000 beaches have been identified by European Environment Agency (Q632988). This project's intention is to add more of bathing waters and beaches to Wikidata (see new property Eionet bathing Water ID (P9616)) and maybe some other bathing waters. Next step is to link existing pictures, get more pictures taken and articles written and add more properties....

Scope

connect wikipedia articles already written in this area with Eionet bathing Water ID (P9616), see Wikidata:WP_EBath/Items
- connect bathing waters with located in or next to body of water (P206), see map what has been done in Sweden
- nature reserve they are located in
- ...

in Sweden we have connected > 2800 bathing waters and we also hope to have a dialogue with Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (Q10518645) so we can access better information about bathing waters using an API

- lesson learned in Sweden is that coordinates reported can sometimes not be good enough for Wikipedia, see issues and SPARQL

The overall goal is making it easier to find bathing places and improve Wikidata objects with pictures and maybe in the long run get everything connected related to bathing waters like status of bathing, reviews, water quality, potential pollution problems....

eea.europa.eu License problem

to mass upload a countries data we need to ask the country if the data they deliver to EEA is CC-0
- EEA is licensed CC-BY-SA and Wikidata needs CC-0 see issues/4

Bad quality of some coordinates

In the Swedish data we have seen coordinates of bathing waters that are not good enough for Wikidata. I have logged them in GITHUB as Issues and also changed Wikidata ranking see SPARQL. When having better sources updated Wikidata... today we dont know how to error report back to Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (Q10518645) I guess they will ask us to contact 290 Swedish municipalities that has no error reporting system ;-)

Do we need new Wikidata properties?

see what is used today Wikidata:WP_EBath/Properties
- in the Swedish project we have created Badkartan.se ID (P9615), which is a site for the community to add reviews of Swedish bath places
- since before we have unique external IDs for Nature reserves and lakes in Sweden
  - Naturvårdsregistret ID (P3613) - identifier for an area protected under the Environmental Code of Sweden
  - Lake ID (Sweden) (P761) - identification code for lakes in Sweden

Open Issue - Wikidata - How do we define available API's per country ?

The Swedish Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (Q10518645) has an API with rather good data (not multilingual) --> you can see the status of the latest tests and planned activities for better water quality (sadly text strings in Swedish) see issue in Swedish
