Explanations [Edit]

DNB edition ID (P1292) is a Wikidata property to identify books (Q29547399). It links to the catalog of the German National Library (Q27302) (DNB).

Editions

This property is mainly used for editions, see Wikidata:WikiProject Books

Works

The main property for works is GND ID (P227)

Organisations

The main property for organisations is GND ID (P227)

The data of the German Music Archive (Q27901) (DMA) has not yet been fully integrated into the GND. Music publishers, record companies and record labels sometimes still have a DNB ID.

Type constraint edit

Right now "DNB editions" can be used for gymnasium (Q55043), fictional human (Q15632617), municipality of Slovakia (Q6784672), architectural structure (Q811979), academic library (Q856234) etc.

Can someone define the use more narrowly? @Emu: FYI. --Kolja21 (talk) 00:28, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

The number is used for publishers as well, e.g. LT:s förlag (Q10552340). Why should there be contraints at all? If something's in the DNB, shouldn't it be linked? Förbätterlig (talk) 13:53, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
In the case of LT:s förlag (Q10552340) the DNB ID provides the correct link to GND 1129695662 (Q10552340#P227) but it is still a GND. However, there are exceptions: The data of the German Music Archive (Q27901) (DMA) has not yet been fully integrated into GND. Music publishers, record companies and record labels sometimes still have a DNB ID. For German readers see: de:Vorlage Diskussion:Normdaten#Musikalienverlag. --Kolja21 (talk) 21:50, 15 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I propose to use a fact and source based method to derive the name of the property.

  1. ensure "ID" or some reference to it is included in the label, as is done in other labels of properties for identifiers in Wikidata

Result:

  1. DNB title ID (as in GND records of type=person at that place "Person" (=person) appears), or
  2. DNB manifestation ID (if each catalogue item is of that type, source missing), or
  3. DNB catalogue ID (on the top it says "KATALOG DER DEUTSCHEN NATIONALBIBLIOTHEK"), or
  4. DNB idn ID,
  5. DNB idn (the "id" in "idn" may refer to the type of the string, here identifier)
  6. DNB ID

For the discussion of this topic, see Wikidata talk:WikiProject Books#renamed property P1292. Kolja21 (talk) 00:05, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I added "ID" to the German and English label, corresponding strings exists for many of the labels in other languages (~kod, ~identificador) [1] . I also turned the English label into singular ("edition"). @Vollbracht:, would you agree that this is an improvement? The word "edition" has no substantiation, and I would suggest to remove it, the labels in Czech "kód DNB" and Ukrainian (Latin script: kod DNB) already have no reference to "edition", and French "identifiant DNB (éditions)" and Spanish "identificador DNB (ediciones)" as well as Galician and Catalan - maybe derived from Spanish - have it in brackets. Humanisator (talk) 12:45, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I would oppose removing "edition" (leaving only "DNB ID"), since this would probably result in many users confusing this with GND ID (P227); IMHO "edition" is probably the most intelligible label for most users, also because it has stayed there for years (and often changes of well-established labels can disorient users); I would not oppose "DNB manifestation ID" as alias. --Epìdosis 14:15, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Property:P1292#P1292$4b7ddf9f-4404-ab71-38e1-7e76627523c3 includes music publishing company Q1917775, record company Q2442401, record label Q18127 and Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P1292#Types_statistics has counts for them: 10, 1, 1. If these three things are not subclasses of "edition", more precisely of "version, edition, or translation" Q3331189, then the label is wrong and maybe the statistics are biased since it was avoided on certain items because of the wrong name. "manifestation" is also a statement regarding the type of the things, and the companies and the record label aren't a IFLA LRM "manifestation".
Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P1292 21 February 2023, 11:02 (UTC) — Items processed: 1,788 and in the statistics section : "version, edition, or translation (Q3331189)" : "511", that is 0.285%. https://reasonator.toolforge.org/?q=Q3331189&lang=en in section "From related items" lists 19 subclasses, nothing like a company or label among them.
How about DNB catalogue ID? Or if the DNB in the item pages always uses "title" in line two, DNB title ID? Maybe before changing the name, the 388 type violations (388/1788 = 0.217%) should be fixed. Also, it could be helpful to have a SPARQL query showing for each allowed type at least one example WD item that uses it in P31 and has a P1292 claim. Humanisator (talk) 17:51, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Edition still is unacceptable. What about DNB literature ID for clear distinction from GND being a DNB person ID? Vollbracht (talk) 18:37, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Or DNB content ID (better for non print content)? Vollbracht (talk) 18:45, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
"DNB ID", "DNB number", "DNB catalogue ID", DNB record", "DNB record number" or "DNB record ID" all are fine. @Epìdosis GND and DNB are not the same. Even "GND Kennung" and "DNB Kennung" are distinguishable. However we have a lot of better solutions now and as I stated before edition can't be correct by any of its meanings and therefor by no means should appear in the name of the property. Vollbracht (talk) 21:39, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Again: For the discussion of this topic, see Wikidata talk:WikiProject Books#renamed property P1292. @Humanisator: It's not helpful to start parallel discussions. The name of this property should not differ from the other books properties and of cause the change of the name should be carried out after the discussion. --Kolja21 (talk) 23:53, 22 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
