NAICS Wikidata structure documentation

NAICS industry classifications are now modeled on Wikidata. The information is drawn from the spreadsheets and other documents at https://www.census.gov/naics/?68967.

• Each Wikidata item represents a unique classification definition, not a unique code number. Note that a single definition may have multiple codes (at the same time or at different times), and a single code may have multiple definitions (at different times), as detailed below.
• Each classification has its own item with a instance of (P31): NAICS industry classification (Q123130760) statement. These are separate from any existing "general" item about a specific industry, as the NAICS definitions are specific; they should not be merged, but may be linked in some way if appropriate.
• NAICS codes are hierarchical. Two-digit codes are the broadest, with six-digit codes being the most specific.
  • These are linked with part of (P361)/has part(s) (P527) statements.
  • In some cases, a node has only one child, both with the same title and definition. In these cases, all such codes are listed on a single Wikidata item.
• NAICS codes are used in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, but individual codes may be valid in any combination of these. The NAICS code (P3224) statements have valid in place (P3005) qualifiers for the countries it is valid in.
• NAICS codes are revised every five years, beginning in 1997.
  • Items have inception (P571) and dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576) statements.
  • If there is a one-to-one change in the title (P1476) or NAICS code (P3224), they are both listed in the same item with start time (P580) and end time (P582) qualifiers.
  • If there is a split or merge, all classifications before and after the change get separate items linked by replaced by (P1366) and replaces (P1365) statements (although these might be missing for NAICS codes with fewer than six digits). Sometimes this results in Wikidata items with the same NAICS title; in these cases the date range of validity is included in the Wikidata label in brackets.
  • If there is a "consolidation", where a broader code absorbs more specific codes formerly beneath it, generally the same Wikidata item is used.
  • There are also replaces (P1365) statements linking to older SIC industry classifications.
• If more than one Wikidata item has the same NAICS code, there is also a separate item with an additional instance of (P31): conflation (Q14946528) statement and "[unspecified definition]" in the label. This is to assist for making lookup tables and for cases where the date is not clear.

Currently all codes valid in the United States in any year are represented. Codes valid in Mexico and/or Canada but not the United States have not yet been imported.
