Template talk:Welcome/text/Archive 1

Redundancy

The first and second sentences of the welcome ("Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit!", "Wikidata is a free knowledge base that can be read and edited by humans and machines alike, and you can help.") contain quite a lot of redundancy. Maybe they should be merged, or the second one trimmed? --Yair rand (talk) 20:49, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Translating

I've got a little problem: I would translate the template in Bavarian, but I don't know how. Can you help me? -- Klinglton358 (talk) 16:09, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

On the template page, you can see a block with links to translations. Above this block, there's a link "Translate this page". Click it and you will be sent to the translation interface. --Michgrig (talk) 16:32, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
NB: "Diese Seite übersetzen" in the Bavarian. --Kaganer (talk) 18:13, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

IP editors

I have an idea, the template could detect an IP editor's talk page, and include something like: "You're doing a good job, but you'd do us all a great favour by registering." Someone advanced with parser functions? Thanks, Littledogboy (talk) 09:57, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

There is another template, Template:Welcome-anon. Is it what you're looking for? --Michgrig (talk) 18:57, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Addition

Can we add a line to the template that says: "Babel lets you view and edit more than one language at the same time. Just add to your user page". The natural language (e.g. de-N) should be changed to be the persons' viewing language. --Tobias1984 (talk) 12:29, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

special:prefixindex/template:Welcome/lang

wgArticleId:1342#larger_benefit
Hi! One should add a parameter that overwrites the actual interface language used by the user and detected via . I still should be used as the default Welcome language. This would allow a larger benefit of the available translations.
I suggest the usage of something as:

The change should be documented in template:Welcome/doc. There one may include also:

To welcome a user in a specific language use
You may set your preferred language at Wikidata in your preferences.
To edit in additional languages or monitor the values available in other languages you may insert the Babel template substitutes at Wikidata. Insert at your user page.

This additions may be improved using syntax. Thanks in advance! לערי ריינהארט (talk) 09:10, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

How would this be useful? In what situations would it be preferable for a user not to be welcomed in their own interface language? --Yair rand (talk) 09:18, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
You may know the users from your home language community. I can not know what language they are using at Wikidata in their preferences.
Assume you see that the "User contributions" link is available at "Tools" (and if you either find contributions made some time ago or no contributions),
In a first step you may insert / or update (see below) the Welcome message.
In a second step you may contact the user at a known wiki, by mail, by phone etc.
This would allow to build a new language community at Wikidata. לערי ריינהארט (talk)

parameters update=1, preserve=earlier Welcome message users wikicode, and shorturl=1

At my user talk page https://www.wikidata.org/?curid=16714844#top I can see:

--Liuxinyu970226 () 01:16, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

This means that text will change if the template text is modified.
a) Maybe we should add also a link with action=purge.
b) Assume you want to add new parameters. Then you want to preserve the original "Welcome message users wikicode" (the history). At my talk page this would be:

--Liuxinyu970226 () 01:16, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

c) additional note about shortest links: You may know how difficult it can be If you want to use links to user pages / subpages when other scripts then ISO 15924:Latn (Q13099375) are used. Please see search: ...&search=ISO+15924. If you want to refer to sections at Wikidata:project chat non LATN variants see the target links at template:ProjectChatLanguages or to sections at pages from ara.Wikipedia, he.Wikipedia etc. the level of complexity is much higher; there you may work with optional url anchors.

There have been discussions at MediaWiki (and MediaZilla) for years about "short url" / "shortest url". I am using at my user page:

[SERVER?curid=16714844#top wgArticleId:16714844#top]<br />

c) continued: We should consider to add a parameter "|shorturl=1" (link present). The default value shouls be "|shorturl=" (NIL == empty string == absent == no link).
My knowledge of Javascript / Lua is quite poor to make the changes my self. Any help is appreciated. Regards לערי ריינהארט (talk) 10:20, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Delete the zh-hans page and zh-hant page, please

Editprotected Because the zh page already exists. Thank you very much. -- -- By LNDDYL.(Talk02:28, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Weak oppose I'm afraid it'll no longer works for me, you know Meta-Wiki's Welcome template always shows English instead of zh. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 13:49, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Babel

Whenever I teach someone to edit Wikidata, the first thing do is get them to put a Babel template on their user page. Should this template include advice to do so? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:56, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Editprotected

Please add the line

* User options - including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.

after the 'Community portal' line. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:20, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Done Per what I can see above, there seem to have been more similar requests. I'm not sure whether this will be relevant forever, though. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 15:07, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Signing talk pages

Please add the text:

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

You can see how it should appear, on en:Template:Welcome. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:32, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Added it. If you don't see any problem, I will make it translatable. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 14:05, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Replace {} with auto-signing.

Editprotected Replace {} with <includeonly>~~</includeonly><includeonly>~~</includeonly> so that the editor themselves does not have to sign it? Or replace {} with{}? PokestarFan • Drink some tea and talk with me • Stalk my edits • I'm not shouting, I just like this font! 22:40, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Oppose You need to insert the signature by hand in order to have it expanded. See the usage instruction on Template:Welcome. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 07:15, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
