Incorrect use of instance of (P31)

Hello –

This statement on "Metra" (Q1814208) was incorrect, and I have removed it. Errors with instance of (P31) and subclass of (P279) lead to numerous false inferences, in this case including Metra (Q1814208)instance of (P31)physical process (Q17320256). When using these two properties, check the description of your value item, and make sure your statement follows Help:Basic membership properties. (In this case, Metra is a company, and commuter rail (Q1412403) is a service offered by that company.) There is often another property that can accurately express the relationship you had in mind; in this case, industry (P452) works better. You can search through available properties here. Thanks!

Hello Lotje, yes that was me. I auto imported the logos from wikipedia info boxes. Unfortunately there were many values rather belonging to image (P18). I've checked through all the items that were edited in this run and corrected the wrong ones. Thank you for the hint!

Lotje (talkcontribs)

Thank you for looking into this ;-)

Hi. Your auto-imports from de.wikipedia have in many cases given wrong values. For example M3 motorway (Q1270230) from https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_motorway_(Nordirland) , in which the 1.3km results in 13km in Wikidata. I'm guessing your script assumes that all periods (.) in German are to be ignored, but if doing that you need to check there are at least three digits after the period. I corrected the couple I spotted but I suspect there are many more you'd need to track down with your script.

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

Hi Smb1001,

sorry for the mistake. I will filter my edits for those with dots and correct them.

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

Hi, I'm done now. There should be no wrong imports left. Thank you for the hint.

Hi Waren01,

I think my edits were correct but as they seem to be interpreted in an unwanted way by the two pages you mentioned, I reverted them. Do you see a way to change how the wikidata content is interpreted?

Waren01 (talkcontribs)

I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about it. Thank you very much for solving the problem quickly.

Hi! I checked a few articles, and saw that you have added photosphere image (P4640) for a lot of items. I just wanted to let you know that I (with assistance of User:Nikki) have made a small userscript to display the Panoviewer image directly in the Wikidata item. The script (with instructions for how to enable it) is located here. Hope you may find it useful. :-)

Hi, Nvrandow, since you added the image, would consider replacing it by File:MZN-MZN.jpg? Thank you for your time. ~~~~

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

Hi Lotje, i added it with preferred rank. Thank you for the hint.

FR and official language per municipality

Jura1 (talkcontribs)

Hi Nvrandow,

Just curious, how do you determine them? I think some just use mainly one language, but avoided making it the "official" one.

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

Hi Jura1,

I actually just took the main language, because I think it has to be official at least that way, you can communicate with the administration in this language. (The german title of P 37 is Amtssprache, which literally means language of the administration)

Hello Geogast,

It's important to distinguish between lines and systems of public transport. commuter rail (Q1412403) is a subtype of a public transport system, thats why I removed the instance of (P31) statements on the line items. There is no separate item about the commuter rail system of São Paulo. And as the lines have part of (P361) statements connecting them to Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (Q1121227) (which is common to indicate a line belonging to a system) I marked this as commuter rail (Q1412403).

Geogast (talkcontribs)

It's true: commuter rail (Q1412403) is kind of messed up. A lot of labels don't match with each other nor with the subclass of (P279) statement.

The problem is that you just deleted the instance of (P31) commuter rail (Q1412403) statements and did not replace it by something better. Right now, nowhere in Line 9 (Q5245848) it says that this is a railway line/service. The statement part of (P361) Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (Q1121227) is not the same; a lot of things could be part of CPTM; in fact, some train stations have this statement.

Besides, CPTM is a company, not a system; I know nobody in São Paulo who would say that he goes "by CPTM" as people in, let's say, Berlin would say they go "by S-Bahn".

Inception for railway stations

Pi.1415926535 (talkcontribs)

Please don't use Inception (Property:P571) for railway stations and other buildings. The correct property is Date of official opening (Property:P1619). Thanks.

Jura1 (talkcontribs)

Why are you removing "inception from all buildings"?

Just that one can also add the date of the opening, doesn't mean it shouldn't have that date.

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

Others here doubt, that what is "created" in the NRHP-infobox is the same as P571.

And I am not allowed to do such a large edit without having consensus.

So I have to revert it all.

Pi.1415926535 (talkcontribs)

Why are you continuing to misuse this property without replying here?

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

You are right for railway stations. But P571 does also mean "date constructed" and is broadly used for building.

Regarding me redoing things: Sorry, the import is valy lage, it crashed and I restarted it.

Jasper Deng (talkcontribs)

Nvrandow, thanks for replying but note that communication is absolutely key on this project. I just blocked someone else for a refusal to do so. You are expected to reply promptly to concerns.

Transit projects are often conceived long before infrastructure is built. Silicon Valley BART extension (Q7514993) was in the making (and still is in the making) for decades.

Pi.1415926535 (talkcontribs)

You have added incorrect uses of this property to half a dozen items on my watchlist alone since you replied here. Are you going to go back and fix these errors?

Jasper Deng (talkcontribs)

Since you have continued to do so (e.g. ) without adequately addressing the above concerns, I have blocked you from editing items for 3 days. The block can be lifted if and when you reach consensus for your changes. I suggest opening a discussion at Wikidata:Project chat to that end.

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

Are you ok with it, when I revert all the edits on railway stations and leave the rest?

Jasper Deng (talkcontribs)

It's not just railroad stations, it's also buildings. I think you need a broader discussion about this content before continuing editing.

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

P571 is used on 310,922 of the 2,093,715 building-items. Date of opening is for publicly accessible building like schools, museums, railway stations etc.

For heritage protected buildings in general, that include private estate P1619 does not make sense.

I don't know why this is a problem/in question now?

Jasper Deng (talkcontribs)

Look, one of the most fundamental problems here is that a building exists once its first components are erected but it is not "opened" (or in this case completed) until... construction is completed.

Anyways, the content dispute itself is not why you are blocked. You are blocked because of your inadequate efforts to communicate with @Pi.1415926535: about his concerns. You really ought to get consensus whenever your edits are disputed.

Nvrandow (talkcontribs)

Sorry, I promise to reply faster in the future, and stop my edits as long as they are disputed.

Regarding the edits in question here: If your unblock me, I will revert everything.

Jasper Deng (talkcontribs)

Okay, I will remove the block, but please do take seriously your obligation to communicate about your edits.

I'm importing logos from the german wikipedia infobox "Infobox Computer- und Videospiel". The property is called "Bild" (= image), but almost all of them are logos.
