CommonsMedia

Does the "Commons media file" datatype work with other shared media repositories, other than Commons? I believe it is a too WMF-centric name, it should be called "sharedMedia" instead, and every translated name would need to be updated accordingly. Also, I think it should support local files, too. --Ricordisamoa 02:31, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Hey :) It only supports Commons atm. I'll think about other repositories some more. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 14:39, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Phase three schedule update?

Wikidata:Introduction says that "Planned deployment of [the third] phase on Wikidata is in late 2013." Could we get an updated timeline for phase three, so we can avoid having the intro page look out of date? --Yair rand (talk) 07:28, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

I am working on the plan for 2014 and hope to have it published this month. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 14:42, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Abuse filer for merge items

Hi, while we are awaiting the release of entity redirects, I have created an abuse filter for item merges via the api module to log all merges. You can see it in this query. However, as you can see, also the (‎Merged item from 'Q###') edits are listed there, although the abuse filter only logs edits with "wbmergeitems-to" in summary. Also if I test the filter against single changes with Special:AbuseFilter/examine it says The filter did not match this change. Might someone of you take a look into that? Perhaps the filter is added to all changes made during a merge and not only to the one it really applies? Thanks in advance. -- Bene* talk 15:49, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

@Hoo_man: --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 14:37, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
The linked recentchanges page looks good to me, so I can't see the problem right now - Hoo man (talk) 17:45, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

SubProperty mechanism

Wikidata does not have a 'SubProperty' mechanism - where one property can be identified as a SubProperty of another and a search for items with a property can be extended to include it's SubProperties.
In the discussion at Wikidata:Property_proposal/Generic#specifically @Emw: has pointed out that this proposed property is for creating the equivalent of subproperties using a qualifier and has pointed out some problems with that.
Could someone from the development team have a look at this discussion and Emw's comments. Filceolaire (talk) 00:59, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

The objections seem sensible to me. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 14:41, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
For reference, see also this bugzilla enhancement request: Bug 59680 - SubProperty mechanism. Klortho (talk) 16:40, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Invalid dates

It seems that at some point, dates were entered in an invalid format (the string did not have the right length here, causing script errors in Wikipedia. I do not recall any discussion about it: is this a fixed bug ? --Zolo (talk) 10:53, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

I think it is a fixed bug. If it is still happening from now on please let me know. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 14:43, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
New dates seem to work fine, but apparently, it requires to completely delete and then recreate buggy dates, and I am rather puzzled by this diff. --Zolo (talk) 21:48, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Why does the recent changes linked page for A-class destroyer show a change to English Wikipedia (Q328) when there is no obvious link between the two? --Izno (talk) 04:32, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

instance of (P31) on that item has the source imported from Wikimedia project (P143)English Wikipedia (Q328) The Anonymouse [talk] 04:59, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Oh, good catch. -_- --Izno (talk) 15:55, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

wikicommons and lua

Hello,
I am a wikicommons contributor writing templates and Lua modules.
My lua module commons:Module:Wikidata4Bio now fails to retrieve data from wikidata as the wikidata library seems to have been deactivated from wikicommons (mw.wikibase equals Nil).
Is it temporary ? Can I be notified when it will be back?
Best regards Liné1 (talk) 07:00, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry for the issue. Phase 2 should not have been enabled on Commons yet (and we have always communicated it that way). There was a configuration issue that enabled it anyway that we fixed 2 days ago. It will be re-enabled in the next months but not right away because a few more things need to be fixed first. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 20:20, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

This page is inactive for several days. Can someone have a look at:

  1. Creating a new item without a label
  2. Copy/Paste a statement (bugzilla:53619)
  3. Add Qualifier when adding statement
  4. GUI for edit summary (bugzilla:45224)
  5. Change claims' property
  6. Long property labels are cut (sources)
  7. Duplicate statements
  8. remove all statements of one property in one item
  9. Searching keywords containing punctuation
  10. Going back in browser loads old version
  11. Unknown language
  12. Launch item creation from the property value input box (bugzilla:49068)

--GZWDer (talk) 06:04, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

I'm currently working on the 2014+ plan for Wikidata which I consider more important. My plan is to publish it this month. Once I am done with it I am going to spend time on the paper cuts page again and update it/asnwer requests there. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:06, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Why?--GZWDer (talk) 13:50, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

  • I have tried:
  1. Using GUI to add link in Q4167836
  2. Special:SetSiteLink
  3. "Add link" in Wikivoyage page
  4. slurpInterwiki tool
  5. Merge tool (from a new item Q15627782)

None do work.--GZWDer (talk) 16:31, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Can confirm that I have tried to add a sitelinks to svsource in the same item, with the same result! -- Lavallen (talk) 16:41, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Same result for me. The "timeout" error message seems very general and uninformative. The Anonymouse [talk] 16:57, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Strange. Is this limited to this item? To this language version? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 18:43, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Looks like GZWDer has tried to add a page at zh.voy, while I have tried to add a page at sv.source. -- Lavallen (talk) 08:11, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
Merged finally using tons of ways. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:12, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Wikiquote

I was wondering when Phase 1 will be available for WD:Wikiquote. Is this planned on the development roadmap? --Ricordisamoa 15:09, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

  • I think Wikiquote will be the next project to be supported.

I guess this is probably the order of which project will be support first:

  1. Wikiquote
  2. Wikibooks
  3. Wikiversity
  4. Wikinews
  5. Meta-Wiki, MediaWiki, Wikidata itself
  6. Wiktionary
  7. Old Wikisource and Beta Wikiversity
  8. Incubator
  9. Probably non-WMF projects

--GZWDer (talk) 15:58, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

Note that the last point, non-WMF projects are already kind of suppored by our tons of identifier properties. ;-) -- Bene* talk 22:02, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
@Bene*: but Wikibase Client can't be installed in non-WMF projects, non-WMF projects can only use API which is rate limited. Making Wikidata useful outside WMF will be a big work for WMDE programmer to do after all WMF projects are supported.--GZWDer (talk) 07:33, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
The client can be installed on non-Wikimedia projects. It just can't connect to Wikidata. And yes that will still take time. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:15, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
No this is actually not the order in which we will be doing the projects.
@User:Ricordisamoa: Wikiquote is on my list for after Wikisource. So at least another month or two. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:15, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Suggesting already linked item for Wikisource

When I added s:ru:Категория:Биологи to Q8300830, suggestion shown s:ru:Категория:Биология which was already linked to Q1457402. Same behavior was to some other similar categories. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:17, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! Will have a look. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:16, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Internal error in ApiFormatXml::recXmlPrint

Setting a reference via API to MSW ID (P959) in Chiroptera (Q28425), Dermoptera (Q183383), Pholidota (Q2191516) and Proboscidea (Q26308) I got the message:

<?xml version=\"1.0\"?><api servedby=\"mw1117\"><error code=\"internal_api_error_MWException\" info=\"Exception Caught: Internal error in ApiFormatXml::recXmlPrint: (P248, ...) has integer keys without _element value. Use ApiResult::setIndexedTagName().\" xml:space=\"preserve\" /></api>.

The created references seems to be OK. --Succu (talk) 13:05, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

no.wikisource

In the description to the sitelink to no.wikisource, is it today written "norsk bokmål". no.wikipedia is Bokmål, that far is true, but no.wikisource is in Norwegian, with texts both in Bokmål, Nynorsk and other Norwegian-related languages/dilects. -- Lavallen (talk) 10:42, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

I've reported it as bugzilla:60097. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 18:43, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
On https://no.wikisource.org/ the value of wgContentLanguage is 'nb'. As far as I understand is 'no' the superset of 'nb' and 'nn'. Should wgContentLanguage on nowikisource be changed to 'no'? --Fomafix (talk) 14:15, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Auto URL in statements

Please Freebase ID (P646) and sample use - Africa (Q15). My question is - can we make this to automatically create an URL to Freebase from inserted string, just like in topic's main category (P910). --Rezonansowy (talk) 14:22, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

There already is. Activate AuthorityControl among your Gadgets and prey that it works with your browser. -- Lavallen (talk) 14:46, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Frequent errors when adding second/third/etc value to property

Exception Caught: Specified index is out of bounds happens quite frequently when adding second/third/etc value to property. Reloading page fix situation but it may take long time for some pages. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:56, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

This was already reported here. See also bugzilla:58394. -- Bene* talk 16:08, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Bug in importing

I don't know if this was previously reported, but I found a bug in importing a template. I was importing (en.wiki) en:Template:TOC left. Upon completing it, several templates broke because it imported information from a Wikidata module onto the history of existing templates on Wikidata. For example: (wikidata) Template:Namespace detect and (wikidata) Module:Namespace detect existed previously on Wikidata. The import wanted to import (en.wiki) en:Template:Namespace detect, but it already existed on Wikidata. For some reason, what it did was take the history of (wikidata) Module:Namespace detect and imported the history onto (wikidata) Template:Namespace detect. Compare the history of Module:Namespace detect and Template:Namespace detect and you'll notice how the import imported history of the module onto the template mistakenly. The result was a messy clean-up trying to remove modules from the template namespace and trying to restore about ten essential templates from being corrupt. Interestingly, I've noticed that most, if not all, of the templates that did this error had {{#invoke: in the template, so this may have something to do with the bug. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 14:49, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Hmm not good. However I don't think this is a bug specific to Wikidata? Can you please report it on bugs.wikimedia.org for the importer? Thanks! --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:12, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Script Errors

I get quite frequently error messages like this, when I access Barack Obama (Q76)

Ein Skript auf dieser Seite ist eventuell beschäftigt oder es antwortet nicht mehr. Sie können das Skript jetzt stoppen oder fortsetzen, um zu sehen, ob das Skript fertig wird.

Skript: https://bits.wikimedia.org/www.wikidata.org/load.php?debug=false&lang=de&modules=jquery%2Cmediawiki%2CSpinner%7Cjquery.triggerQueueCallback%2CloadingSpinner%2CmwEmbedUtil%7Cmw.MwEmbedSupport&only=scripts&skin=vector&version=20140125T024416Z:91 The more more properties, ranks, qualifiers, ranks, sources the more likely these errors occur. Projects with many village pumps / main pages

Do we have any solution for Talk:Q16503#Commons_have_many_Village_pumps? --Stryn (talk) 08:48, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Are they about the same thing but in a different language? Then we don't since Wikidata can't deal well with wikis set up in this way. Are they about different topics? Then they should have different items. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 20:27, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
They're in different languages. Maybe after the issue is resolved when Incubator is handled... --Rschen7754 20:52, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
