replace multiple identical labels

A few months ago somebody pointed out that it was silly to have multiple identical labels in the case of taxa. For most taxa the label (in any language) is the taxon name. This means we will end up with 1.9 million × all the languages = more than a hundred million redundant labels.

It would be very sensible if there were the option to have the software read "P225, taxon name" as the default label, in any language. The same may also work well for songs, computer programs, and anything that is called the same in every language. - Brya (talk) 17:34, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

This would also help in preventing wrong labels. It happens with some frequency that items prove to have the wrong subject, and after correcting there remain all those wrong labels in multiple languages. - Brya (talk) 05:25, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

This simple request is open about a month. But we can not use Wikidata. Fix it please. --sasha (krassotkin) 08:58, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Hoo is on it. Thanks for poking. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:54, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

OTRS for Wikidata

Hello, some contributors want to ask to some statistical offices the right to import data under the CC0 license. My questions are the next ones: 1) Did the development team think about a similar system as the OTRS system used in Commons to validate the imported data ? 2) Is it a task corresponding to the work of the development team or something which has to manage by the community ? Thanks. Snipre (talk) 15:53, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Hey :) I think this would be pretty much the same as what is done for image rights on Commons. I am not super familiar with the process but am happy to help with this. In general I see this as a community task that the dev team can support if wanted. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:23, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Lydia. So I propose to start Wikidata:OTRS and if you have someone in your team or in the Wikimedia DE which has some strong knowledge in legal stuff, it could be helpful if he can write a formal text which allows the import of data under CC0 license like the one there. Then we will need a email address like permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (permissions-wikidata@wikimedia.org) and I think after this we can start to manage this with some volunteers. Snipre (talk) 16:43, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll send an email to WMF legal for the text in a minute. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:45, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Do you have some contacts with these people : https://otrs-wiki.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page ? Snipre (talk) 16:49, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
User:Raymond and User:John F. Lewis might be able to help. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:51, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
Just release a message there. Perhaps can be helpful with you can put your support to this question in order to indicate that there is an official interest behind. Thanks a lot. Snipre (talk) 16:59, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
We already do have an info at wikidata dot org queue, though it is used for general information about Wikidata. --Rschen7754 02:15, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
Rs We need to have access to the ticket system of the WMF not only to have an email address. And then we have to define a proper legal text for data release. See this. Snipre (talk) 08:30, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I know what OTRS is, and have had an account there for two years... The wikidata queue is already archived, so I don't see why we can't just use that one, unless we want subqueues for categorization. (And it seems that that is what the admins are proposing too). --Rschen7754 04:04, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
Ok, so the professionals of OTRS don't know if it is possible to mix image permission with database permission: subqueue of permission or subqueue of wikidata. That's the question. So we need an answer from Wikilegal to see if the management of data permission requires special skills or not. If not, we can mix with commons permission in a dedicated subqueue. Snipre (talk) 12:58, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) The OTRS admins are ready to help us but they want to know what we need as system. The main question is to know is we can mix the wikidata permissions with the commons permissions. For that we have to know if the management of these new permissions is a difficult task and requires special skills in legal knowledge. To define this with Wikilegal.
Then we have to think about the process:
  • As we don't have the data like the pictures for commons on a server, we have to find a way to spot the data which are released under the authorization: is a simple description of the data in the authorization document enough or do we need a copy of the released data ?
  • If the description is enough, it would be good to find the correct terms to describe the data. We have to think about on-line documents or closed databases, full set of data or partial set of data,...
  • If a copy is necessary, we have to have a way to store them: how ? where ? ....
  • Then we have to identify the data in Wikidata. We can create a item datatype qualifier and for each ticket/permission, we will create an item describing the owner, the ticket data and the date.
  • Is there a possibility to block some statements of the wikidata database in order to prevent any modification of the data imported under this system ? This is not necessary, we can use bots to check sometimes the consistency of WD data with the external database if this is on-line. Snipre (talk) 15:43, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
Rs As you know the system from inside, can you give us your list of advantages/disadvantages of the proposed solutions given there ? Thanks. Snipre (talk) 15:45, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

New interface

Does not seem to support merge anymore (FF, Win7).--Ymblanter (talk) 19:16, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Can you please try purging the page by adding ?action=purge to the URL? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 19:20, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
And what's with all the "1"s in the edit summaries? They're REALLY distracting! Jared Preston (talk) 19:59, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Haha yes. They should clearly not be there. Katie is looking into it right now. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 20:00, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Edit summaries are fixed :) --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 00:33, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
Now I got the merge option, but merging itself does not work. Specifically, I tried to merge Q1142592 with Q18746591 and get an error. Purging does not help.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:27, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: what error do you get? ·addshore· talk to me! 20:31, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
As far as I can tell I just merged it fine! [1] [2] ·addshore· talk to me! 20:33, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Adam for merging it. I had an error message saying that some (unrelated, as far as I could tell) item prevents these two from merging. I checked that the item (some German article) was not on either of them.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:35, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Interesting! If you get the issue again be sure to pop back :) ·addshore· talk to me! 20:37, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Need for an update

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this comment. I was browsing some random pages to see what needs translation and have found that this page informs of future events to take place in 2013 (???). Shouldn't this page be updated, or removed if it's not needed anymore? I Don't think it's useful to translate it if it's so outdated. Thanks for your comments.--Quico (talk) 20:28, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Uff yeah. Can we just delete this page? I am not sure why it was ever imported. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 20:33, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
We may archive it and remove from translation (but this cannot be undone). See WD:Autopatrolled users. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 20:38, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Page deleted, the content is either out of date of massively duplicated in other locations. ·addshore· talk to me! 20:43, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Error when calling a deleted property

Using {{#Property: on non-existing properties gives an error message on fr:Wikipédia:Wikidata/Bac à sable. Given the content of the message, I don't think it is intentional. --Zolo (talk) 11:25, 17 January 2015 (UTC) clarified --Zolo (talk) 10:40, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

You can transclude property by label, {{#property:nature de l'élément}}. --JulesWinnfield-hu (talk) 16:56, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
It may be a good idea, to warn that the property could not be found but this sort of message looks buggish. --Zolo (talk) 10:43, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
THanks for bringing it up. Do you have a suggestion for what would be better there? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 15:00, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
The "property not found for label P373" part (preferably translated) might have been clearer without the "rendering failure" part but I am not sure using error message is the best solution. The most likely reason for this sort of issue is that the property was relabelled/deleted. No big deal for the article, some info will be lost, but thhre is no need for a big red message that only a few can understand. Adding an "invalid property" tracker category sounds like a better approach. Those who don't know about these technical things won't be bothered, and those who do will find problematic pages more easily. With the current system, the issue can hardly be found using the search enging. This particular case was spotted only because an administrator -with some technical background- could not make sense of the message and notified it on fr:Discussion Wikipédia:Wikidata. --Zolo (talk) 15:57, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks for the clarification. I have created a ticket for it at phabricator:T87430. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:22, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

JSON dumps

Since yesterday the directory is empty. Is this intended to be so? --Succu (talk) 10:14, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

No there was unfortunately a screwup which deleted them all. A new one is generating right now I'm told. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:27, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
They are back by the way. Sorry I forgot posting it here earlier. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:16, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
. Thx. I allready made use of the new one. --Succu (talk) 11:40, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

LM template

One af the admins kindly instructed me to use the LM template to get localised images in the translated help pages. I noticed that this help page already used the template so I uploaded to Commons the translated image. However the translated version of the help page still shows the English image. Is the LM template not working, or did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance. --Quico (talk) 16:23, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

@Qllach: Again me: I have purged the page and the file is now shown localised. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 16:46, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
Oh, great, thank you, very kind of you, I notice I still have to learn a lot! --Quico (talk) 16:58, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Getting "unprocessed" data from the database?

Is there a simple way to get data as it is stored in the database, without any processing such as padding, converting binary numbers to characters, or the like? Would this be an example of how to get the data:

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Export/q44269

A related question is whether there is a specification about how data shall be provided to data consumers so data consumers can write reliable parsers?

Jc3s5h (talk) 19:06, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

I am not developer, but data are stored in MySQL database as I know. Some raw data can be found in the database dumps. Also page Wikidata:Data access can be useful maybe. — Ivan A. Krestinin (talk) 21:07, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Wordnet reference integration

For various applications, the mapping of wikipedia/wikidata references to wordnet references is useful. This is only true for common words (not for people, geo places, book and movie titles...).

Such links were partially integrated in FreeBase - not perfectly.

As far as I know, nothin like wordnet reference is currently provided by wikidata.

That would be a MAJOR improvement, since many people (like me) spend a lot of time trying to establish such mapping, probably incorrectly.

Future plans on this ?

Best regards,

PG

I don't know wordnet in detail but it looks to me like this will need Wiktionary integration. That is still quite some time away as it needs major technical development. Planning is at Wikidata:Wiktionary. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 09:46, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Error without info when trying to add website property to Adland

I'm trying to add official website (P856) to the Adland (Q4683270) item, and every time I try to save the value, the operation fails without any information as to why. The error object returned states "failed-save" as the code, and has as its info field "<unknownerror-nocode>". Any reason why this would be? When I put in an invalid URL string it fails and informs me that it's due to not providing a valid URL, but when I provide the actual URL for Adland, it's just a silent failure. // coldacid (talk|contrib) 03:21, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
