site optimization suggestion

it would be really cool wikipedia use the ipfs network as a cache for the pages, because as ipfs uses the p2p protocol the readers themselves could contribute to the project by providing an article for other readers, reducing a part of the workload on the wikipedia site. there is already a project that does this, it would be interesting to get in touch with people from that project. https://github.com/ipfs/distributed-wikipedia-mirror  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 131.255.45.27 (talk • contribs) at 01:22, 27 April 2021‎ (UTC).

For privacy and various other reasons this is unlikely to be done on Wikipedia or any of it's sister projects, sorry. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:01, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

Deleted Page - What do I do?

To the development team. This is my first day ever as a Wiki contributor. I have spent the day creating a page using a wide range of references. The page is for a documentary film that was broadcast in a number of countries. After working on it all day, adding the references and citations - I returned to the page to find it had been deleted. It simply says EMU deleted this page stating "(Wikidata does not host original encyclopedic content)".

What does this mean? How can I rectify this? Is all the work I did wasted?

Many thanks.

User:OwAYTiOntYwA

@Emu: --Tagishsimon (talk) 14:12, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

@OwAYTiOntYwA, Tagishsimon: It seems that you created some sort of encyclopedic article on your userpage. Wikidata does not host original encyclopedic content. Although users have considerable leeway in how they present themselves on their user page, this discretion should not be used to circumvent regulations. I have restored the page for you to copy its contents and use it at a more appropriate location. I will again delete it after some time. (If another admin disagrees, please let me know.) --Emu (talk) 14:19, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

@OwAYTiOntYwA: Thanks Emu. Seems to me that, with improvements to the refs, dropping the unhelpful emboldening, sorting out the links, and some judicious editing to deal with overlong lifts from reviews, the article might fly on EN Wikipedia. Perhaps copy it to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Sl%C3%A1n_leis_an_gCeol and do some more work on it? --Tagishsimon (talk) 14:32, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
@Emu: - The page at User:OwAYTiOntYwA can be deleted; content is now found at w:en:Slán leis an gCeol. Thanks again for your help. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:34, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Labels

Labels are determined by Template:Babel (Q5461620) on user page.

  • Why there is no other way to set up default labels languages in options?
  • How to icrease limit of languages from about 40 languages?
  • If labels or especialy labels and variant names are added in around 40 langaues at once it takes a lot of time to save every change to label and variant names. If I'm adding 3 or 4 variant names to around 40 languages it can take up to few minutes to save every edit in item history.

Eurohunter (talk) 16:03, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

At the time this was implemented using the existing babel system was the easiest on top of automatically determining the language based on the users' browser language, rough geographic location and previous language changes they've made. In future iterations of the Item page we will look into more seamless ways to configure the languages.
Please also be aware that the case of 40 or more languages is way more than we think is useful for the large majority of editors, so it has not been optimized for that. In those cases we recommend just expanding all languages. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:07, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

MediaWiki icon

Hello, bad MediaWiki icon on the left menu. Cordially. —Eihel (talk) 10:55, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Eihel, I am not sure what icon you are referring to. Is it maybe coming from a gadget or user script you are using? Could you clarify more where you are seeing the icon? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:08, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
@Eihel, Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): I think the issue is with this gadget: MediaWiki:Gadget-InterProjectLinks.css. Ayack (talk) 10:31, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Exactly Ayack   .
Lydia Pintscher (WMDE), see this (since the end of March, this is this picture).
  1. With Firefox, go to the main page e.g.
  2. Scroll down the sidebar to In another projects
  3. Right-click on MediaWiki and click on Inspect Element
  4. In Inspector, right-click on the nearest class (<li class="wb-otherproject-link wb-otherproject-mediawiki"><a href="https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki" hreflang="en">MediaWiki</a></li>) and copy the outside of the HTML
  5. go to Special:Search and paste your code
  6. remove uninteresting classes to keep only wb-otherproject-mediawiki
  7. improve your search with all:insource:/wb\-otherproject\-mediawiki/ (without forgetting to escape the metachars)
  8. …and you will find the same reply as Ayack (not me or a tool). Cordially. —Eihel (talk) 13:32, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Ok makes sense. Thank you. This is not for the dev team to fix then but the admins here. Maybe one of them reads it here and will change it. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 15:51, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
So Interface admin… as Ladsgroup + Random Lexeme in french (Lexème au hasard). —Eihel (talk) 02:46, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
@Eihel@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE)@Ayack Did the change. Is it fixed now? Copied from ruwiki. Amir (talk) 09:32, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Hello Amir, it works for the MediaWiki logo, thanks. But the term "Random Lexeme" is still in English. In French, the term must be "Lexème au hasard". Cordially. —Eihel (talk) 09:38, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
@Eihel It took me a long time to realize what you're referring to. That also is fixed now. Amir (talk) 09:51, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
You are kind. Thank you  Eihel (talk) 09:54, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
I think that this discussion is resolved and can be archived. If you disagree, don't hesitate to replace this template with your comment. Eihel

Databox for Dagbani Wikipedia

I am trying to duplicate Hausa Wikipedia's Databox on Dagbani Wikipedia (dag:Tɛmplet:Databox), and hopefully also other Wikipedias in the future, but without much success. User:DonCamillo tried to follow the instructions here but it does not seem to work. No idea why, that's exactly what he did on the Hausa Wikipedia and it worked. He kept getting the error message: "Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Wikidata' not found." Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Sabon Harshe (talk) 02:14, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

You need to import (duplicate) the appropriate "Module:Wikidata" to Dagbani wiki, because it is required by dag:Module:Databox. The instructions on Wikidata are only relevant if you import the template from Wikidata, not Hausa. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:22, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
@Sabon Harshe: dag:Module:Wikidata doesn’t exist yet, you probably need to copy that as well. (If that solves your problem, it should be added to the databox instructions, but let’s first see if it works or not.) Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE) (talk) 09:22, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
@Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE): @Matěj Suchánek: It works now! Thank you. Sabon Harshe (talk) 04:38, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
Another request: the Wikidata item d:Q9458 (the Prophet Muhammad SAW) is fully protected, but I would like to add dag:Muhammad to it. Thank you! Sabon Harshe (talk) 12:49, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
Done Please use {{Edit request}} at the appropriate talk page next time. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 13:42, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
@Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE): @Matěj Suchánek: Thank you! I have just successfully enabled databoxes on the Dinka, Bambara, and Dagbani Wikipedias. However, images often do not appear or show up, even if the Wikidata items all have images attached to them. An example is dag:Balimbiɛɣu, connected to d:Q652142. File:Pentatomidae01.jpg is attached to Wikidata item Q652142, but the Dagbani Wikipedia databox does not display the image. How can we fix this issue? Sabon Harshe (talk) 17:27, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
I guess the following in dag:Module:Databox is responsible:
    local images = item:getBestStatements('P18')
    if #images == 1 then
        databoxRoot
            :tag('div')
            :wikitext('[[File:' .. images[1].mainsnak.datavalue.value .. '|frameless|300px]]')
    end
It is displayed when there is exactly one image, but not more. You can change it to eg. #images >= 1 to choose the "first" (whichever) image. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 13:40, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you Matěj, that worked. Sabon Harshe (talk) 14:11, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Looking to obtain a wikidata dump

Hi, I'm a PhD student working on the area of anomaly detection in KBs. To support my research work and test my developed approach, I need to have a dump of a KB. Right now I'm working by calling the API of Wikidata. Could you direct me to a place from where I can download a full/subset of wiki data?

Hello! Depending on your purpose, there are different kinds of dumps available. Wikidata:Database download has more information about the Wikidata database dumps. -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 08:21, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

Seems like this vandal edit still displays on many Wikidata items and other Wikimedia projects (see example, also screenshot). Is there any way to fix this? Regards Kirilloparma (talk) 21:03, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

@Kirilloparma I notice that the edit was reverted and so it was likely a caching issue. I think it should be fixed now. In the future, you can purge the page and see if it still happens. You do that by adding ?action=purge to the URL of the item. - Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 09:24, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
As result of phab:T254280 all properties are semiprotected. According to Wikidata:Autoconfirmed users user accounts that are more than four days old and have more than 50 edits are considered autoconfirmed. But Youtpry (talkcontribslogs) apparently has less than 50 edits when he edited publication date (P577) (and other properties).--Jklamo (talk) 09:34, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
Even their first edit ever was to a property. Something makes me feel that just the 4 days are enough (ie. it's OR). --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:27, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
In fact, the user had plenty deleted contributions, they are just not displayed to all. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:29, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
