Motivation
editThe collections.louvre.fr website unveiled on March 23rd 2021 uses an ark identifier for each of its items. The "Base Atlas Identifier" property now links to the site and only covered items exhibited in the Louvre Museum. This identifier covers every single item in the Louvre collections, whether they are on display in the Louvre in Paris, Lens, or in storage. Rhesusnegatif (talk) 16:45, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
Discussion
editthat's a very good news (that those new adresses are ark) - does this mean that Atlas ID should progressively converted to this new ID, once created ? (since Atlas ID will ultimately become obsolete) --Hsarrazin (talk) 22:00, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hello Hsarrazin, from what I understand, the Atlas web database is already not functional anymore, with the ids rederecting to the item on the collections web page (you can test this on any wikidata item with such an external identifier. And I haven't seen a trace of that Atlas ID in the new item's metadata.
- However, it should be noted that this new ID is very different. The Atlas ID only encompassed objects on view in the Louvre Museum, this new ID covers every object within the collections, whether they are deposits, on view in the Louvre Lens, stored, etc. We're jumping from a few thousand items to hundreds of thousands (I don't believe every single shard of pottery inventoried in the Louvre will become a Wikipedia item but still). I would suggest keeping the Atlas Base ID while warning of its obsolescence and updating wikidata items with the new ark. --Rhesusnegatif (talk) 22:49, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- well, that was, more or less, what I meant - not deleting Atlas IDs, because other databases or ressources could refer to them... deprecate and add new ID - we're very lucky that, contrary to other museums, they redirected the IDs.
- I was a bit surprised by the announcement about Atlas because, after years without using it, I used it 2 days ago, and it was working properly... that was a swift and clean update :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 22:56, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Shonagon: Could you help Wikidata to migrate from Atlas ID to ark: ? Pyb (talk) 10:14, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- Of course Pyb. It will be a pleasure to help. If the property is validated, as soon as it is ready, I could get started. --Shonagon (talk) 21:21, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

edit- Strong support of course ! I remember adding Atlas IDs to Louvre inventory on Commons... that was sooo... painful ! --Hsarrazin (talk) 22:01, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Support obviously. On a side note: I'm wondering if we should keep creating new identifier like that (see User talk:Dipsode87/ARK reflexions on that matter). Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 07:30, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
