Motivation

- Comment If it is necessarily the case that '# literate' + '# illiterate' = 'total population' for a given year, isn't this property just redundant to taking 'total' - '# literate'? Mahir256 (talk) 19:35, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
- It seems to me it is not guaranteed to be a simple complement. For instance, it is possible that for some individuals it was not possible to determine whether or not they were literate (e.g. because they were very ill at the time of the census), in which case I would expect there to be no entry for il/literacy for them, meaning that the total literate + illiterate in that locality wouldn't add up to the total.
