December 2014 edit

Hello, I'm Sjoerddebruin. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions because it didn't appear constructive. Feel free to use the sandbox for test edits. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks! --Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 09:31, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

(Which I did, I left Sjoerd de Bruin a message, it was strange, and I had no bad intentions - as always - don't know what happened. Dan Koehl (talk) 12:03, 28 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Genealogy edit

Hi, Dan. Wie geht es? Just touching base here; noting that you are clearly familiar with Wikidata. Presumably enough to be able to see how its facilities could help a WM genealogy site. I've read the second newsletter and most of the META talk page (which I hadn't seen before). (I must confess that I couldn't remember where we had met when I got your email!! Sorry - 76-year-old memory.) Robin Patterson (talk) 05:12, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Robin Patterson:, mir gehts ganz gut, danke. Thanks for a nice greeting here, Yes, I think I have done a couple of things here, so I could actually start with a smaller project. But are you sure its totally OK, to submit genealogy records here, from pretty unknown people? Dan Koehl (talk) 05:42, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Reminder edit

Please have a look at Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard. Thx. --Succu (talk) 22:53, 14 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Frédérique Chamson edit

Hi there,

according to [1], Frédérique Chamson never was a member of the 'Académie de Nîmes': that's the reason of my removal. Regards, 92.184.101.44 10:19, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations, Dear Administrator! edit

English | español | français | Nederlands | русский | +/−

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our gift is better than the one at Commons or Meta)

You have your gun; now here's your badge: {{User admin}}/{{#babel:admin}} and {{Admin topicon}}. Enjoy!

Congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Wikidata. Please take a moment to read the Wikidata:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Wikidata:Project chat, Wikidata:Requests for comment, and Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikidata-admin @ irc.freenode.net. If you need access, you can flag someone down at @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Wikidata:Guide to Adminship to be useful reading. You may also want to consider adding yourself to meta:Template:Wikidata/Ambassadors, and to any similar page on your home wiki if one exists. (Check Wikipedia:Wikidata/Wikidatans (Q14964498).)

Please also add/update the languages you speak to your listing at Wikidata:List of administrators. You may also like to add your username to this list if you would not like that items you delete at RfD get marked as deleted automatically. Again, welcome to the admin corps!

Lymantria (talk) 10:21, 19 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you @Lymantria:, will do everything requested above, and read through well! Dan Koehl (talk) 10:50, 19 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Congrats. I hope your adminship makes interaction the between WD and WS more seamless. Good luck fighting vandalism here. --Succu (talk) 19:59, 19 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you @Succu:, yes, although I view an adminship merely as a tool against vandalism, I will in any case try to do my best to improve the interaction. Maybe Project Wikidata on Wikispecies, the collaboration platform with Wikidata:Wikispecies can serve as one way of improving communication and cooperation? Roland Paulze d'Ivoy (Q54554745) edit

Hello,

For Roland Paulze d'Ivoy (Q54554745) I removed the nobility title "count" because he and his family are not "count" it is a fake title and this family doesn’t belong to the nobility :

This family and its fake title of count is listed in the book « A quel titre » an authoritative dictionary of Fake nobility in France.

Charondas , A quel titre?, volume 37,Les Cahiers nobles, 1970

Traduction in english : « Paulze d’Ivoy (comte) : Fake nobility, bourgeois 18 century »

I'm sorry to not having indicated this when I made the correction, but thank you to understand the legitimate reason of my correction. --185.42.222.143 19:08, 4 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

I see @185.42.222.143:. I also see that when I reverted your edit, at 2018-10-03 21:24‎, I had checked the Wikipedia article, where mentioned as count on frwiki (comte de La Poype) but user Hictorv on frwiki seems to have changed this at 21.21, after I had read the page, and the link with the mentioned source for that he was not a count, is difficult to read, the direct link seem to mention the term comte and also baron, while the link to an archived version goes to a page where I cant read about this person at all... So sorry if yu think I did a mistake, but when I reverted your edit I had just read the article on frwiki, where he was mantioned as count, and appearently the user who changed the article did that after I read it. Interestingly, this is the only edit that user @Hictorv: has ever done on a Wikimedia server. A truly uniqie input, one single edit, from an acount fr:Utilisateur:Hictorv which was created 2018-10-03T23:12:54, just a second before the edit...?
Anyhow, If I did a miste, I apologize. Dan Koehl (talk) 22:13, 4 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
No problem,
I made some researches, in fact its a little bit misleading : there was a old family whose name was "de la Poype". This family was baron and count de la Poye. In the 19th century, the last woman of this family married a member of the family Paulze d’Ivoy [2]. Their son Roland Paulze d’Ivoy added to his name that of his mother "de la Poype" and took the title of « count » but he was not noble no more than "count", that's why this second family "Paulze d'Ivoy de la Poype" is mentioned as fake nobility and using a fake title.
By the way, congratulations on your election as administrator. --185.42.222.143 04:07, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Revert edit

Hi Dan,

this obviously wasn't an unconstructive removal. This claim was only there to help me to found some documentation about J. Reinaud. Now that it's done, it's no more useful. I allow myself to re-delete it.

Re: edit on Q3322116 edit

Hi Dan, my edits on wikidata items were aimed to remove the elevations imported by a bot from ceb.wiki, which are known to be wrong. You can check the items I corrected looking, for instance, on Openstreetmap. The elevations imported by ceb.wiki are sistematically underestimated. Thenks in any case for your patrolling work, --158.102.162.34 11:20, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Lexemes edit

(I'm using English just in case other Wikidata editors may be interested in our conversation.)

Can I find a summary of the current status of the Lexeme project somewhere, in particular the Swedish vocabulary? I've been browsing documentation pages and spurious proposals, but the edit dates aren't entirely clear, and it's a bit tedious to cross-check revision histories all the time to find out... Are we supposed to add every single lexeme, form and sense yet missing manually, or are there plans to do bulk imports of data from free lexicographic sources, such as old editions of SAOB or SAOL (if possible)? Any negotiations with Isof or the Swedish Academy about getting a license to use more recent data going on? How about Project Runeberg (Nordisk Familjebok)?

I see that many lexemes have been imported from Wikidata labels, which have been imported from Wikipedia, which is sometimes confusingly wrong and has so been for years. As an example, the Swedish articles on "Evenemang" and "Händelse" were mixed up wrt to the English versions, and that error of course crept into the lexeme database leading to the Big Bang being something you might get an event management company to engage in... I think I have resolved that one now, after seven years of confusion, but there are probably others waiting to be discovered. Can we somehow search for those and get them fixed before adding more data?

I have also been looking into the English vocabulary and found a number of words with multiple meanings having been entered into the very same sense, such as "office" being described as "a room where administrative tasks are carried out OR a position within an organization" (something like that). I have fixed a few cases of such words, but there are several more, and there aren't even separate Wikidata items for them yet; "Archive" being a rather tricky example. I think we could do an automated search for any lexemes with English glosses containing the word "or" to get a list to work through (some instances of "or" are actually legit in glosses, though).

As I found English "of" totally messed up with two forms (but only one sense) due to an earlier merge with an item describing the lexeme itself as a genitive marker, I began working offline with a mammoth project, sorting out the senses of all the prepositions and corresponding grammatical constructs (such as cases) in any language, with the intent of presenting a table correlating of, from, by, to, when, in, into, i, om, på, ur, av, de, at, в, durch, für, gegen, ohne, um, aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen and so on with each other; I think I found over 80 different prepositions in Danish (but only two in Russian), and English "in" has at least 23 different senses in the COD (9th edition)! This isn't something you can achieve asking volunteers to type in random glosses off the top of their head, but it requires a more systematic approach, I think. Might do the same with conjunctions, articles and numerals. Do you have any suggestions or other comments on that? --SM5POR (talk) 10:52, 9 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Call for participation in a task-based online experiment edit

Dear Dan Koehl,

I hope you are doing good,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I work on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender system that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our system based on your previous edits. Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published to a research venue.

The study will start in late January 2022 or early February 2022, and it should take no more than 30 minutes.

If you agree to participate in this study, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSees9WzFXR0Vl3mHLkZCaByeFHRrBy51kBca53euq9nt3XWog/viewform?usp=sf_link I will contact you with the link to start the study.

For more information about the study, please read this post: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Kholoudsaa In case you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me through my mentioned email.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

Regards
