Constituencies of various Indian Legislative Assemblies edit

@Owenpatel: Just a heads up that you should revise your queries that filter various Indian constituencies as I am adjusting many of their P31 values to be of the form "constituency of the {appropriate state} Legislative Assembly". Mahir256 (talk) 01:59, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - will do Owenpatel (talk) 08:32, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Since you are in fact updating items for the various Legislative Assemblies, would you also be able to adjust the P31 values of those constituencies that do not have an item of the form "constituency of the {appropriate state} Legislative Assembly"? If you aren't able to do this, I can put some time into that this weekend. Mahir256 (talk) 16:37, 29 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Mahir256:Hi. I'm working through the states in alphabetical order and will be updating the P31 as I go. Currently on Assam. Happy to discuss any of the changes I'm making if necessary - see my description of the work I'm doing at WikiProject India
Thanks for doing all of this, as it seems urgently needed both for past and present constituencies. By the way, you may not need to worry about constituencies for West Bengal and Tripura once you get to them; for the former state I have already added much of the information you have added and am tracking them on bnwiki, and for the latter I intend to do both of the same. Mahir256 (talk) 21:01, 2 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
No problem Owenpatel (talk) 21:06, 2 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
You may have noticed that GZWDer's bot has begun mass importing enwiki articles. Many of those are for Legislative Assembly constituencies, in whose absence on Wikidata you had previously created items to complete the list of constituencies for a given state. It may be to your advantage to look for them (just set the username to "GZWDer (flood)" and add "&limit=5000" to the end of the URL afterwards to get as much as you can on a single page). I will try to do the same if I can. Mahir256 (talk) 21:16, 18 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks - will take a look at these Owenpatel (talk) 08:41, 20 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Mahir256: I've now worked through all of the legislative assemblies at State level in India and corrected P31s and made other updates as necessary. There might still be some minor bits of tidying up to do but I think this is looking pretty good now. I'm away for a couple of weeks, so I'll probably not look at trying to do a final tidy up until I get back

Gibraltar is not a part of China edit

Hi Owen, here you defined "en:district officer" as "head of a district office in Hong Kong". What's with Gibraltar, Malta, Palestine? --Recherchedienst (talk) 18:44, 27 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Recherchedienst it looks to me like district officer (Q11129049) was originally meant to represent District Officer for Hong Kong (see revision https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q11129049&direction=prev&oldid=378097581) but was then linked additionally to Wikipedia articles for DO in the British Empire (https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q11129049&direction=prev&oldid=523104735). When I added the description, I was using it in the sense of the current public office of a District Officer in Hong Kong only and didn't notice the ambiguity. My view is that District Officer in Hong Kong (which is a current and active public office) should be separated from the sense of a District Officer of the British Empire (as described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_officer and https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_Officer. Do you agree?

Needs assessment for Wikidata Movement Resource edit

Hi Owenpatel,

CIS-A2K is planning to invest some resources from May-June 2020 to create community movement resource (CMR) materials in English and different Indic languages for Wikidata in the form of tutorials, handbooks, infographics, videos, animations etc. The aim of this initiative is to build a pool of resource materials for Wikidata eventually, which will serve as ready-made handy references for new as well as experienced users. You are requested to fill up this form, so that we can understand your needs on different topics of Wikidata. You are also very welcome to actively participate in the process and help us build the CMR with your different areas of expertise.

Indian scientists datathon edit

Hi Owenpatel,

You are receiving this message as you are one of the participants of WikiProject India on Wikidata and/or a subscriber of the Wikidata India newsletter.

Hope you and your loved ones are safe and sound during this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation.

This is for your kind information that, from 22nd May, 2020 Friday to 24th May, 2020 Sunday, a datathon will be happening on Indian scientists on Wikidata. The lack of data about Indian scientists, their works and publications on Wikidata is the reason behind conducting the datathon. Considering the ongoing pandemic, the datathon will also focus on scientists working on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19.

The tasklist of the datathon is flexible. Participants can choose their own preferred task on this topic

Hoping for your active participation.

Take care and stay safe,

New OpenRefine reconciliation service edit

Hi!

Thank you for wearing the {{User loves OpenRefine}} userbox on your user page!

Because the existing Wikidata reconciliation service has had severe performance issues recently, I have created a new one which should be faster and more robust. You can add it to OpenRefine in the reconciliation dialog with the following URL: https://wikidata.reconci.link/en/api (or by replacing en by any other language code).

If you have any issues with this new service, let me know.

Happy reconciling! − Pintoch (talk)

Notability edit

Thank you for contributing to Wikidata. I see that you recently created an item Q59819205 that does not clearly indicate its notability. The Wikidata project only accepts items that meet its notability criteria, and your item is therefore likely to be deleted soon. In brief, items must have an associated Wikipedia article, must be needed for statements on another notable item, or must have both identifiers and serious sources. For the last case, a good indication of notability would be multiple articles about the subject in independent publications like newspapers or magazines. You can add such sources as references to specific claims using reference URL (P854), or as top-level claims using described at URL (P973).

Also, this may not apply in this specific case, but you should know that we discourage editors from contributing on topics with which they have a strong personal connection, as this may present a conflict of interest. If you are being paid to edit here, then you are obliged to disclose this. For a longer version, you might find it useful to read the essay "How to create an item on Wikidata so that it won't get deleted".  Bovlb (talk) 01:08, 15 January 2024 (UTC) --Bovlb (talk) 01:08, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I found many other items you created that make no attempt to establish notability, so I'm going to stop listing them here, and give you chance to make improvements. Bovlb (talk) 04:09, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

None of the items you are highlighting here are recently added to Wikidata. All these items were added as part of work funded by the Wikimedia foundation and were part of the Wikidata:WikiProject every politician project. These were done while working for a UK charitable organisation mySociety (Q10851773) as declared on my user page.
I'm not particularly invested in defending the notability of these entries but I will note that political constituencies are inconsistently covered by Wikidata and Wikipedia - some countries have very good representation of their political constituencies and others very poor, and while a particular constituency may not be notable in and of itself, they are intrinsic to representing the political landscape of any country that uses geographic areas as part of their political representation (i.e. they serve a structural need as per Wikidata notability guidelines) . This is the reason that the Wikidata:WikiProject every politician project undertook this work.
I would suggest engaging with those who are currently active in recording political information on Wikidata before deciding to remove these entries based on notability grounds. Owenpatel (talk) 09:32, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for following up.
The reason why I'm contacting you in this way is because I'm trying to assist you in rescuing these items. I am sensitive to the issue of covering traditionally under-documented regions of the world?
As part of Wikidata:WikiProject every politician, were you offered any training in Wikidata? I'd like to follow issues of this sort upstream. I believe that improving education is a more efficient approach than dealing with problem items one-by-one. Can you point me at any specific editors that I should contact? Bovlb (talk) 21:35, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and if this work was funded by the WMF, can you please point me at the specific grant? Bovlb (talk) 21:36, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
This is the grant information https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/EveryPolitician. Probably more accurate to say the project received some WMF funding rather than the project was funded by the WMF Owenpatel (talk) 10:00, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I can see you've picked up these questions in Wikidata:WikiProject every politician.
This was work I undertook 6 years ago, and so I'm sure you'll understand that the full details are not immediately in my mind, but I did, and do, understand the notability criteria and the work I undertook was done with these in mind. These entries were created based on the criteria "It fulfills a structural need, for example: it is needed to make statements made in other items more useful." as the entries on constituencies are required to make statements about representation of those constituencies by elected politicians. I can see that as it stands the entries you have highlighted are not being used for this purpose and as such I understand why they could be deleted on notability grounds. My guess is that in this case I was setting up items to make the creation of position held (P39) statements much easier for this political area, but for whatever reason, the relevant position held (P39) statements were never added (in the project I was often working with people more involved in the local political scene and so was probably relying on those statements being created by another editor with better local knowledge).
Where good sources were readily available I would have added these as references - but it is (or was) often surprisingly difficult to find publicly available and citable sources for constituency information for legislatures. Owenpatel (talk) 10:55, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for responding.
I take your point that this work was done some time ago. (The standard template message says "recently", which is misleading in this case.)
Anticipated structural need is an interesting point. It does make sense to have a complete set of certain classes (e.g. political constituencies) so that we can go on to make appropriate claims about other entities (e.g. politicians). Unfortunately, that's not the way our notability criteria usually work.
I'm a little surprised that there's no identifier scheme for constituencies. Bovlb (talk) 18:42, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
