list of ambassadors of the United States to South Vietnam (Q30056139): Wikimedia list article: (delete | history | links | entity usage | logs)

Comment list of ambassadors of the United States to South Vietnam (Q30056139) is a list item whose dewiki sitelink has been mistakenly moved to the position item United States Ambassador to South Vietnam (Q1837664). I strongly suggest to revert to the previous state, since this looks very messy now. —MisterSynergy (talk) 18:59, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, you seem to share my opinion. This looks like a Wikidata–Wikipedia conflict. You can either have interwikis or items with clean definitions, but not both (in the current setup). Given the problems that typically arise from messed sitelinks (or mixed concept items general), I still strongly prefer to revert to separate items. Otherwise other Wikipedians show up soon and complain about the sitelink mess … :-(
@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): how is that redirect story going? It could help in this situation and in many others as well. —MisterSynergy (talk) 17:57, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
Well, en:United States Ambassador to South Vietnam is a list, too. The word "list" just doesn't appear in the lemma but that doesn't change the content. NNW (talk) 18:16, 2 December 2017 (UTC)
Strange. To me the answer seems pretty obvious: interwikis are much more important than "items with clean definitions". Interwikis are a real benefit for the user, "clean definitions of items" are fine but secondary. Let's go agile ;-) --Mautpreller (talk) 20:37, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Reply to comments by @NordNordWest and @Mautpreller::

  • The English and Indonesian articles about the position also contain a list, but they are not set up to be a list only. Consequently they do not claim to be a list. Such mixed content is pretty common in all Wikipedia language editions.
  • There is constant strain due to interwikis with Wikipedians, and the more abstract the involved entities are, the worse this strain is. On the one hand Wikipedians want to have many interwikis, so they merge all kinds of loosely related things together. On the other hand (other) Wikipedians then complain that interwikis are a mess, blame Wikidatians for it, and either go back to manual interwiki management which outdates quickly, or rearrange interwikis according to their personal flavor. Neither is desirable. Particularly the latter often leads to dangling articles (i.e. no longer connected to Wikidata) or isolated items for articles the editor does not understand. “Items with clean definitions” are the most balanced solution for such situations.
  • Since interwiki management then is indeed complicated sometimes, we had an RfC in summer that dealt with redirects as sitelinks to enhance interwiki linking. The outcome could potentially be very useful when articles in question are somehow related, but different approaches are used in Wikipedias (Bonnie and Clyde problem, as also in this case). However, this would require some technical development and changes in the Wikidata content model. The RfC ran in summer and there was a robust support to introduce “redirects as sitelinks” in some way. As far as I know, Wikidata developers never liked this idea, but Lydia offered to write a comment on the matter. It is outstanding for a while now and we should wait for her response.
  • The items cannot be merged unless the mutual links between them are removed. This can wait until a solution is found.

MisterSynergy (talk) 22:15, 3 December 2017 (UTC) Is this discussed somewhere at dewiki?

See de:Wikipedia:Fragen zur Wikipedia#Artikel lassen sich nicht per Wikidata verbinden. I see the problem of "loosely related things" but these Wikipedia articles are not loosely related things. Their content is identical. The only difference is the lemma. I can't see any problem here. There are more complex problems, as: The content of en:Turton doubling is to be found (completely) in de:Henry Turton. However, the two articles are not identical since the German one is a biography whereas the English one is an article about a chess composition theme. All the same, the section de:Henry Turton#Das Turton-Thema addresses exactly the same content as en:Turton doubling. Other problems of a similar kind were discussed in de:Wikipedia Diskussion:Kurier#Relevante Themen finden, zu denen bisher keine Artikel existieren, for example those induced by different biological systematics. A useful interwiki function should permit to find the content of the article in other languages, so it has to be flexible. Maybe Redirect sitelinks could be of help but I don't think they could solve the problem altogether. However, in the case of the ambassadors, I don't even see a problem. Identical content, identical sitelink.--Mautpreller (talk) 22:40, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
The content isn't identical. One article is a list article and the other isn't. I manually created the underlying redirects. Besides I see no good reason for waiting for Lydia to write an answer. She had enough time. ChristianKl () 23:50, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
This thread was started on Friday evening and you write on Sunday evening She had enough time. Ever heard of "weekend" for employees? NNW (talk) 09:56, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
The RfC is open for half a year and the only one that's listed under "Selected requests for comment" on the Watchlist but WMDE till now didn't find the time to formulate an opinion about what it thinks about the RfC. ChristianKl () 22:40, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the dewiki link. —MisterSynergy (talk) 08:51, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
The English and Indonesian articles about the position also contain a list, but they are not set up to be a list only. How many sentences at the beginning of a list are required that it is no longer a list in your opinion? If I would add three sentences to de:Liste der Botschafter der Vereinigten Staaten in Südvietnam will it still be a list or will it be an article like en:United States Ambassador to South Vietnam? And how come that en:Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam has no "list" in its lemma although it is definitely only list? Consequently they do not claim to be a list seems not to help here as an argument. I don't think that you do a favour to yourself when starting such discussions.
In the end: The German, the English and the Indonesion articles are linked now, that's all I wanted, hallelujah and thank you very much. NNW (talk) 09:13, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
There are way more than enough comparable situations where articles “X” and “List of X” (and maybe even more articles of the type “Y of X”) exist in a single project. This alone already makes a clean separation necessary. The continuous trouble other editors might have with your proposed solution (merge items about different concepts) is another reason to place sitelinks based on a 1:1 correspondence. I see such trouble frequently when browsing several worklist of items for deletion, and put considerable time into repairing the fallout typically left behind.
Unfortunately there are indeed practical problems with that approach, but it is nevertheless the only one that works at all from my experience. Of course I do have to rely on Wikipedia policies that “List of X” articles contain lists, and all other do not. At en:Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam enwiki makes a mistake obviously, but I will not touch such cases when I try to get sitelinks sorted. The three Wikipedia articles in question here, however, are all reasonably placed at the correct lemma, and thus not suitable to be merged into one item.
It might be worth to note at this point that Wikidata-interwikis improve interwiki management for most Wikipedia articles, but not for all. ChristianKl now used that dirty redirect hack which comes with the problem that sitelink updates in both items are very complicated now. The preferable solution for such cases would still be local Interwikilinks of the old style within the Wikipedia articles. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:18, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
