Marking pages for translation

Hi. There are currently 25 pages listed at Special:PageTranslation that have been changed since they were last marked for translation, but those changes can't propagate to other languages until the pages are remarked for translation. If you want to hide the pages from the list that don't need to be re-marked for translation, you can enter $('ol > li:not(li:has(strong))').hide(); into your javascript console to only show links to pages that can be remarked for translation. Can someone please take a look? Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 17:18, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I went through the list and marked some. The rest are either unmarked with no actual change, obsolete (pointless to do that) or having some issues. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 14:12, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Also, if they have no actual change, then there is just a notice being displayed that the page has changes that need to be dealt with, and the notice stays there. --DannyS712 (talk) 14:31, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Matěj Suchánek: Thanks, I too think the list should be watched and cleared regularly.
  • For obsolete pages there seems to be a possibility to mark them as Closed translation requests, but don't know how to confirm consensus if not obviously obsolete. Were there any you wanted to discuss specifically or can you "close" them? Wikidata:Administrators by language is a clear example.
  • Non-changes that doesn't affect the actual translation strings still seems to need to be marked for translation for the changes to be reflected on language variants. Template:Uw-link-removal1/text is an example where nothing really happened. Still, why not just mark it for translation and let the bot update clear the change? Are there any other types of non-changes to regard? Wikidata:WikiProject Music only list P6883 in the English variant, even if it doesn't need translation. Recently added though.
  • Issues should be solved. Can you list which items you found problematic?
  • User pages should be rare, but there is User:BeneBot*/RfD-open/text. Is it otherwise an idea to ignore translation flag on User pages?
I'm not very familiar with the translation procedure, but these items should be easy to go through. Jagulin (talk) 11:45, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ad non-changes: why should an admin mark that change? The user didn't explain it. Of course, I could revert it but who would argue...
Ad issues: eg. mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation example - totally wrong markup. Similarly Wikidata:WikiProject Wikidata for research.
Ad user pages: I try ignore them. User space is a personal space where translations are unnecessary.
Community consultation could resolve this, like in the section below. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:48, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Matěj Suchánek: I think the Roles part here indicates that the admin takes an active part. Maybe not how the current process is, but it would be helpful to less experienced users. I looked at the Wikidata for research page, but apart from the last edit (that should be on talk page IMHO) I don't see any problem since you marked it for translation last time. I've noticed that reverting a change doesn't clear the translation request however.
Page translation example is an interesting case, since it's a tutorial to learn translation tags. As such it has to have < when starting the tags at the "documentation parts". Are any of the tools confused by that? I didn't specifically find any error, but we can surely fix it if you can point it out.
@Jc86035: Do you plan to make more changes to Wikidata:WikiProject Music before asking for translation, or were you expecting assistance from a translator admin? You are an experienced user, so I'm not assuming you did wrong, but curious to why so many translation items are left open and this example happened to show up. Jagulin (talk) 18:55, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jagulin: I'm not really sure. I think for a lot of those edits I didn't expect page translation to be affected, but I'm not really familiar with how the extension works so I wouldn't know how to fix the translation items. Jc86035 (talk) 07:13, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jc86035: Thanks for clarifying your intention. I specifically ment this edit[1]. As you say this is not an edit that needs translation or markup, but it still needs to be marked as a "new version for translation". @Matěj Suchánek: I saw you also did an edit and it looks like the page was properly flagged now. Thanks! Jagulin (talk) 11:30, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Note that Pages proposed for translation are not marked "strong" but should not be ignored. Wikidata:WikiProject Neuroscience is an item pending, may or may not be suitable and ready for translation though. The other items should be cleared out from the list. I've reached out to the owners of most pages, so can hold off on those. There are however a number of items I think should be flagged as "Discouraged pages" or be hidden manually from the list by strategic edits or other such means.

Could an available admin do the "discourage" until better option is found? Jagulin (talk) 11:45, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Unmarked pages cannot be discouraged. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:48, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for confirming my suspicion. From what I see the "fake translation items" are either translate tags within nowiki (which seems to be ignored) or clones/drafts that have not been removed. The third type are queries that have translation tag in the search string. Jagulin (talk) 18:55, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can Wikidata:News also be remarked for translation? I've added a new item about State Bank of India, Akhri Shahpur branch (Q66000000). Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 14:54, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
