The present page contains overview tables of properties that are commonly used in connection with Wikidata items relating to heritage institutions. It further contains references to relevant vocabularies and ontologies as well as to mappings to infobox templates of various Wikipedia language versions. The typology of heritage institutions is covered in a separate section.

Specific data modelling issues are tackled on a separate page: Data Modelling Issues.

Note:

  • instance of (P31): Use a type as specific as possible from the typology of heritage institutions. Not all libraries are "heritage institutions" in the sense proper, as they may not have a heritage collection of their own. The same may go for some other institutions being listed on museum inventories and the like (e.g. exhibition centres). In order to declare specifically that an institution has curatorial care over a collection, use instance of (P31) memory institution (Q1497649). Check the mapping for the Swiss GLAM Inventory for an example on how the information in the source file was mapped to various types of heritage institutions contained in Wikidata.

Open issues:

  • director / manager (P1037) vs. chairperson (P488) – which one should be used by default?
  • To what extent should the typology of heritage institutions be used to characterize various types of institutions? Alternatively, it has been suggested to use main subject (P921) instead.[1] It should however be noted that the typologies presently used are mutli-dimensional and do not exclusively focus on the subject/theme of an institution.

Vocabularies and Reference Ontologies

edit

Institution Types

edit

Refer to the "Typology" section for an overview of institution types. The GND, the Library of Congress Authorities, RAMEAU, and probably further vocabularies maintained by other national libraries or similar institutions contain thesauri for various types of heritage institutions. None of the vocabularies reviewed so far seems to have the ambition to provide a comprehensive typology of heritage institutions. On the contrary, they seem to have grown organically, they often lack proper definitions, they are partly country-specific, and the concepts defined in the different vocabularies are not necessarily congruent. They contain however cross-references, which facilitate a mapping among the different vocabularies.

Municipalities and other administrative territorial entities

edit

Municipalities and country sub-divisions should have their own items on Wikidata. This is already the case for many countries, but probably not for all of them. Check out Wikidata:WikiProject Country subdivision and Category:Geographical WikiProjects for information whether a given country has already been covered. If not, ingesting data on all municipalities and other administrative territorial entities should be considered before ingesting data about heritage institutions of a given country.

Mappings to Infobox Templates

edit

The tables below contain overviews of infobox templates related to heritage institutions in the various language versions of Wikipedia. The table is far from being complete; feel free to add information about further infobox templates. Where templates presently already include data from Wikidata, this is indicated by a  . Eventually, most data fields used in the templates should also be documented in the "List of Properties" section of this page (at the exception of those relating to buildings); thus the templates can be used as a guide as to which further properties should be included in the inventory of heritage institutions.

Note: There is a mismatch between the ontological approach taken for some of the infoboxes and the one taken in the context of this WikiProject. In fact, some Wikipedia versions, such as the English Wikipedia, originally conceived the infobox templates for museums and libraries as templates for particular types of buildings. In the context of Wikidata it seems reasonable to keep the two classes (buildings and organizations) apart.

See also: Template:Institution – we should also keep an eye on the developments at the interface between Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, as heritage institutions play an important role as holding institutions of the content at Wikimedia Commons.

To Do List

edit

The following tasks still need to be done (please chime in!):

  • Split the tables below according to the classes concerned (organizations vs. buildings).
  • Complement the tables by adding information about more language versions.
  • Add a "definition" column; make sure that the definitions given for the various language versions in the same row match the common definition; if not, split the row in two or more rows with matching definitions.
  • Add information about which data fields are required in which languages.
  • Add Wikidata items for the data fields commonly used in templates.
  • In cooperation with the various Wikipedia communities: Modify the code of the templates to have them fetch more data directly from Wikidata; document the templates accordingly.
  • In cooperation with the various Wikipedia communities: Improve the infoboxes on Wikipedia in the light of best practices in other countries; work towards harmonization of the infobox templates across language versions.
  • In cooperation with the various Wikipedia communities: Promote the systematic use of the infoboxes on Wikipedia.
