Babel edit

Babel lets you view and edit more than one language on Wikidata. Just add e.g. {{#babel:de-N|en-3|es-1|fr-2|nl-3|it-4|da-0}} to your user page. With the same language codes you can add links to your userpage on Wikipedia e.g. de:User:User123. --Tobias1984 (talk) 15:49, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

December 2015 edit

Hello, I'm Tom Morris. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions to Q6581072 because it didn't appear constructive. Feel free to use the sandbox for test edits. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks!—Tom Morris (talk) 17:41, 20 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

William I of England (Q37594) edit

This edit has been reported at Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard#William I of England (Q37594) due to the incredible nature of a child of an English monarch only having an Arabic Wikipedia article, and not even an English language name. Jc3s5h (talk) 22:08, 8 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Jc3s5h, yeah I understand your question. According to en:Sancho_II_of_Castile_and_León, his wife Alberta was possibly a daughter of William I. I updated both items. --Melderick (talk) 22:24, 8 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

You added another father on Q2128810 2016-06-24T19:46:42‎ edit

FYI I took away the second father you added on Q2128810 2016-06-24T19:46:42‎ - Salgo60 (talk) 16:33, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for notifying me about it. I added this second father following the Russian Wikipedia. Can you explain why you removed that statement ? --Melderick (talk) 18:41, 18 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Greetings Genealogy Fan! edit

I'm working on a rather large scale effort to help get in claims of the sort that you're creating - by hand?

Anyway, I work using the Genealogy Wiki "WeRelate". It's a wiki - organized at a page per person - with features that allow the people to be connected up as father/mother/sibling/spouse/etc.,etc.

The complete database at WeRelate has something like 2.8M people, but my focus is the people who have a wikipedia page - and more generally - those who have an associated Wikidata identity. I've been tagging Person pages with their corresponding Wikidata identifier.

Using a bit of code I've written, I'm able to search out all the pages on WeRelate with a Wikidata ID. Then, my program uses the WeRelate connections to infer what the Wikidata genealogy claims would be. Finally, it comes over to Wikidata, comparing what's been inferred with what's actually present. That's how I came up with the 4,000 or so claims I've made so far - I've got another 5,000 waiting to upload.

I think my approach is very good in a statistical sense - but a bad page assignment on WeRelate is apt to yield a bad result in an upload. Apparently, you've encountered a couple.

I wanted you to be aware of what I'm doing - and let you consider how it might affect you. If you're interested - I would really welcome your participation in the effort that I've been on. Perhaps you would consider working through the same domains you're interested in from the WeRelate perspective? If you worked there - my automatic process would then pick up what you had found - and create the needed claims for Wikidata?

Anyway, best regards, and I hope I don't step on your toes - not too much anyway.... --Jrm03063 (talk) 02:08, 8 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Jrm03063: Greetings to you too. Well, sure, I can include WeRelate in the way I work. We will need to talk about a few things :

- do you have a process to update a Wikidata ID that have been merged into another item ?

WeRelate is a single tree environment - so only one "Person:" page per human. Duplicates are merged - so we shouldn't ever have more than one WeRelate "Person:" page with a particular Wikidata ID. My tool looks across the entire WeRelate universe for Person: pages tagged with a Wikidata ID. The first check is simply to make sure that no duplicates are encountered. --Jrm03063 (talk) 15:17, 10 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
No. Take for example, [1]. 2 items on Wikidata refered to that person : Margaret of Guelders (Q24040015) and Margaret of Guelders (Q27996381). The usual process on Wikidata is to merge those items (here into Margaret of Guelders (Q24040015)). Now imagine on WeRelate you had linked your Person to Q27996381, you would now have the wrong link (not totally false, but clearly outdated). So my question was : do you have a process to identify those kind of persons and to change their link to the right one (Q24040015) ? --Melderick (talk) 18:38, 12 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

- what are you doing when your tool finds statements on Wikidata that are not on WeRelate ?

I can emit those results any way I want. Previously, I reviewed my list and entered claims manually. I've lately changed to emit the claims in "Quick Statement" format - but I've yet to be able to perform such batch loads of claims. Others have been able to do so though - so I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. --Jrm03063 (talk) 15:17, 10 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I am mostly interested (or concerned) with your statement of "removal of some plainly incorrect connections". If it's possible, I would rather check those before they are removed. Some of those statements might have to be set to deprecated instead of removed. Other cases could be to mark the statement as disputed or just hypothetic. Those kinds occur a lot in medieval genealogical data. --Melderick (talk) 18:38, 12 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for being interested enough to consider this. You had found a couple claims I entered that needed to be reverted - which probably means that the pages on WeRelate aren't tagged correctly. Regrettably, that's easy to believe - because I originally had associated WeRelate pages with English Wikipedia page names. As biographies in Wikipedia get added to and reorganized - names are often changed - such that the WeRelate pages might not reflect the right Wikipedia page any more. When I move through quickly - adding Wikidata IDs for the pages with English Wikipedia - I may not notice an association that's changed or bad. So if you find mistakes I've made with claims on Wikidata - chances are they're also present back on WeRelate. If I don't get them resolved back there - I might re-introduce them to Wikidata.
It's easy to find out if WeRelate knows about a Wikidata page - go to this search screen, then enter the Wikidata ID as a Keyword. --Jrm03063 (talk) 15:17, 10 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes. I found out and started adding a couple of Wikidata ID, while I go through my own list (currently 38000 items). --Melderick (talk) 18:38, 12 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wulhard of Flavigny edit

Hello, I saw that you undid my edit removing a claim from Wulhard of Flavigny (Q7744234), so I wanted to explain why I made that edit, because even I was mistaken in making it, I do think there's an issue with the claims as they stand. Adalard of Paris (Q348214) and corresponding Wikipedia articles state that Adalhard died around 890, while Wulhard of Flavigny (Q7744234) and at least some of the ptwiki article state that his "father" Wulhard died in 1044 (the ptwiki article also claims a birth date in 982). Since children can't die before their parents are born, do you have any thoughts on what should be done to resolve this? Thanks! --Jamie7687 (talk) 02:47, 14 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Jamie7687:. I did a quick check and I would say the ptwiki infobox and categories are plainly wrong, obviously taken from the ptwiki of Miles de Châtillon (Q10330024). I just removed the claim of Wulhard dying in 1044 as it was copied from ptwiki. --Melderick (talk) 09:58, 14 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! edit

Hi! Firstly I would really like to thank you for the splendid work you have been doing in these years regarding Greek mythology: you are building a really accurate genealogy and you have merged a lot of duplicates. Greek mythology on Wikidata has improved mainly because of your fantastic contribution! Secondly, I've recently noticed that you had marked Q3647042 as a duplicate and I fixed it on Italian Wikipedia: if you find similar cases on Italian Wikipedia, please write me and I will certainly fix them. Bye and thank you again, --Epìdosis 14:29, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Epìdosis:. Thank you for your kind words. Sure I'll let you know if I find other duplicates on Italian Wikipedia. --Melderick (talk) 16:13, 7 October 2018 (UTC

Ancestors of Borte Chino edit

Without giving any references, you traced Genghis Khan's legendary ancestory, Borte Chino, all the way to the Tibetan king Thothori Nyantsen. Would you mind telling me where this information coming from? https://m.wikidata.org/wiki/Q662696 Yesükhei Baatar (talk) 17:03, 17 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Yesükhei Baatar:, I have followed the data recorded on the various wikipedia pages for the members of this family. One reference is given in this page : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_tree_of_Genghis_Khan#Genghis_Khan's_ancestors . Feel free to amend if needed or to add qualifiers like nature of statement (P5102) = hypothetically (Q18603603) or disputed (Q18912752) to some relationships. --Melderick (talk) 10:09, 23 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Something is wrong with User:Melderick/moveClaims2.js. It working fine but I get the message "The claim P31 was successfully copied to <a href="/wiki/Q91014484">Q91014484</a>." Data Gamer play 07:53, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Data Gamer:, hello. You will need to explain more because I don't see what is wrong with getting a successful message. What were you trying to do ? --Melderick (talk) 10:25, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I didn't get "The claim P31 was successfully copied to Q91014484". I get "The claim P31 was successfully copied to <a href="/wiki/Q91014484">Q91014484</a>". Previously I didn't see "<a href="/wiki/Q91014484">Q91014484</a>" but only item number. Data Gamer play 10:37, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Data Gamer:, ok I understand. It seems they changed something in the library displaying notifications that prevent us from using HTML, hence what you're seeing. At least it's not preventing you from moving/copying data. Thanks for reporting it to me, even though I am not sure I can fix it anytime soon. --Melderick (talk) 10:53, 11 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Duplicate WikiTree ID claims edit

Hello there! I see you may have added a duplicate WikiTree ID claim for Q1677724. Only one ID should exist, even when duplicates are present on WikiTree. See Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P2949. Feel free to choose the best ID according to WikiTree naming conventions and message profile managers to complete merges. Thanks! Add possibility to copy claims between forms on lexemes in moveclaims2 edit

I am adding pronunciations on lexemes and in Swedish (and probably other languages as well) it is quite common that two or more forms are pronounced the same way. Right now it's not possible to copy statements between forms, but if you would add it, it would make my work much more productive. Thanks for an awesome tool! Ainali (talk) 20:48, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Ainali:, I am not working much with lexemes so could you give me an example so I could make sure I address correctly your needs ? Thanks. --Melderick (talk) 21:52, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
In fact @Ainali:, I just tested on sandbox 2 (L1234) and I was able to copy a statement from one form to another with the current version of the tool. I have used "Copy" in the "to another entity" tab and I entered L1234-F6. Let me know if it works or if I misunderstood you. --Melderick (talk) 22:02, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Of course! In halvera (L54719) for example, both Lexeme:L54719#F1 and Lexeme:L54719#F5 are pronounced the same. If I could copy it from the first I add it to to the other, it would be nice. Ainali (talk) 22:13, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ah, that works for me too! I never tried it since it is the same entity. :) Thanks for the guidance! Ainali (talk) 22:18, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Wonderful ! Have fun --Melderick (talk) 22:31, 4 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

moveClaims2 credit edit

Hi, User:Melderick/moveClaims2.js currently uses the credit using [[User:Matěj Suchánek/moveClaim.js|moveClaim.js]] (line 112), which makes things confusing (since it's not the right version of it). Could it be changed to using [[User:Melderick/moveClaim2.js|moveClaim2.js]], please? --Pokechu22 (talk) 20:23, 18 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Pokechu22:, I just changed the credit. --Melderick (talk) 00:53, 19 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Matěj Suchánek:, any idea when you will find some time to merge my version with yours ? As it seems more and more people are using mine, even though it's supposed to be a temporary version. Thank you --Melderick (talk) 00:53, 19 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Strip input of moveClaim2.js to just the identifier edit

Hi!, Check out User:1Veertje/moveClaims2.js, where I've added two lines to your script that makes it so that input in its two input field get stripped to just the P or Q value. This makes it easy for folks to work with the full URL to these properties or when they've copied it with brackets from a page's title. --1Veertje (talk) 14:58, 7 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

moveClaims2.js pull request edit

Thanks for creating moveClaims2.js. It is really useful. However I was unhappy about how it integrates into the UI. I changed it a bit over on User:Shisma/moveClaims2.js:

If you like it, feel free to merge it into your code. Or if you want something changed let me know. I couldn't find a better standard icon. I wonder is there a list somewhere?

I would advise you to look at it and contact Matěj. --Melderick (talk) 18:31, 15 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Merge edit

You undid my merge from Pauline de Simiane (Q110381599) to François de La Rochefoucauld, 4.Marquis de Surgeres (Q108942227) (seems fair) but then you merged the item to Pauline de Simiane (Q3372769) resulting in very different life dates on this item. Could you please check again? Emu (talk) 10:01, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hmm let's see. Pauline de Simiane (Q110381599) was based on the Genealogics page, while Pauline de Simiane (Q3372769) was based on Wikipedia. Both have the same spouse and daughter. I agree her life dates are different but it's probably an error in Genealogics. I can't find another source matching Genealogics dates. --Melderick (talk) 16:08, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Call for participation in a task-based online experiment edit

Dear Melderick,

I hope you are doing well,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I am working on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender model that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our model based on your previous edits.

Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published in a research venue.

The experiment should take no more than 15 minutes, and it will be held next week.

If you agree to participate in this study, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfA1wfdBfCRlcG3WhDyc-V8lzgPNx3fDFCNXkyn4CSwahXZ_A/viewform?usp=sf_link

Then, I will contact you with the link to start the study.

For more information about my project, please read this post: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Kholoudsaa

In case you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me through my mentioned email.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.
