   Comment @DannyS712: Thanks for raising this (and apologies for the delay). That’s a fair question, and to be honest I’m not too sure how to best phrase my answer ; as in, we could also sort-of just use either described at URL (P973) or full work available at URL (P953) in place of many external-IDs.
  In this particular case, my use-case would be to use this external-DB as todo list to create all episodes of a given podcast (99% Invisible (Q16001236) is high on my list :) and having an external ID would make it somewhat easier, to more easily use mix’n’match and ensure we have full-coverage (all such Panoptikum entries have a matched item) *and* non-duplicates (all podcast episodes of the show have a Panoptokum ID, without constraints violations). It is of course possible to do that without a dedicated ID, but the workflow would be a bit less smooth.
  In general the podcast ecosystem is missing 'authoritative' identifiers − because they do not belong to one platform (although iTunes has been the de-facto reference for a while). The RSS feed URL should be it ; but feeds get moved from one hosting to another, have several alternative URLs… And episodes are worst: the 'authoritative' source should be the RSS feed contents (which contain all episodes of the show) ; however it is common that feeds are cut (only the last X episodes − for example, this feed is missing the first 5 episodes, while Panoptikum has them recorded ; this only has the last 10 episodes). That is why I think having IDs to clearly identify episodes, with the relevant constraints, would make sense.
