Songs

I have very vivid question: should we create an item for each song from each album of notable musicians (groups)? P.S. Even if corresponding song has no any Wikipedia article about it. --Infovarius (talk) 22:47, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

That's certainly a question! My thought for now would be to focus on songs that have corresponding Wikipedia articles that can show the notability of the individual song. Sweet kate (talk) 01:37, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
I was thinking about this also. Here are some example fields that could be added:
  • The length of the track
  • The set of instruments used in the track
  • The set of time signatures used in the track
  • The set of all people who played on the track
  • Lyrics for the track
  • The set of all people who wrote music on the track
This information could later be used to generate more detailed discographies and album pages, and to calculate statistics. For example, "On what percentage of recordings was time signature A used by band X?". "Show me a word cloud of all lyrics used by band X." "Show me word clouds comparing the lyrics of different genres of music."

I'd certainly create any missing item for a song when necessary to say something about another item. For instance Brown Sugar (Q21888088) vs. Q21888090, where the distinction is in the statement has part(s) (P527) which requires the three involved songs as object. Music video URLs?

Should we have a property for URLs linking to music videos? --AmaryllisGardener talk 18:37, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

@AmaryllisGardener:: YouTube video ID (P1651). See how I use it on Kipinän hetki (Q20249986) --★ → Airon 90 17:48, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

It seems to me ideal that composers would have a link to their page on IMSLP. I don't see that listed under the artists properties here, though, only the work properties, and the property IMSLP ID (P839) seems to only apply to works. Is there a similar property for people, or can that be used as well? Taking Wagner as an example, is it a problem that they use categories (like Category:Wagner, Richard) to designate composers' pages, and thus it should link to Category:Richard Wagner (Q8041069) instead of Richard Wagner (Q1511)? Rigadoun (talk) 08:21, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Pages on IMSLP site are dedicated to musical works, no pages exist for composers. The works from a specific composer are organized by category, so it seems logical that a composer wikidata element has a property IMSLP ID (P839) linked to that category. If you would like to change IMSLP organization, you're at the wrong place to lodge a complaint ;) --Djiboun (talk) 11:55, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Former band members

Hello. Newbie here. I was wondering if there is a property to indicate former band members, for both the band's item and the individual's item. On Wikipedia there is usually some kind of prose accompanying a Wikilink, to indicate the person's status, but things are different here. It seems like some kind of connection should exist between the items, but in a way that makes it clear the relationship is in the past. Thoughts? :) Shinyang-i (talk) 05:27, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Thinking further, looks like the "point in time" qualifiers work for that purpose. Dunno how to do strikethru here. Shinyang-i (talk) 05:43, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
start time (P580) end time (P582) See Pink Floyd (Q2306) for an example. --ValterVB (talk) 09:38, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Mode vs scale

I believe (from point of better classification) that major scale (Q190812) and minor scale (Q184567) should be separated into 2 items each: one which is subclass of scale (Q179651), the other is subclass (part?) of mode (may be unrelated with Q731978), tonality. What do you think? --Infovarius (talk) 09:37, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Music groups

Hi! Does tha music groups have country (P17)? The Beatles (Q1299) has country of origin (P495) also... --Edgars2007 (talk) 15:10, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

country of origin (P495) is preferable. --Infovarius (talk) 13:10, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
I also prefer country of origin (P495). --Jklamo (talk) 22:26, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
I too prefer country of origin (P495). --AmaryllisGardener talk 14:07, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
OK, thanks. --Edgars2007 (talk) 00:40, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Pieces using motifs from other pieces

Tchaikovsky used the melody of God Save the Tsar! (Q478470) in two compositions of his, Marche Slave (Q922953) and 1812 Overture (Q212776). How do we represent this? based on (P144) or has part(s) (P527)? I feel like the former is too strong a statement (most of the composition is original, after all), but the latter isn’t right either. —Galaktos (talk) 18:17, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

Just throwing another possibility out there: influenced by (P737). Don’t like this one either though, this doesn’t seem like its intended use case at all. —Galaktos (talk) 20:04, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
The qualifier applies to part (P518) may prove useful, I've added it to the table yesterday because it "saved" me at least once.[1] Federico Leva (BEIC) (talk) 12:19, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Automatic label for music albums and singles

Please partecipate in this discussion, which is related to the scope of this project :) thank you. --Superchilum(talk to me!) 08:25, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Maybe this would be easier if we solved #Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records. As someone pointed out there, this would probably be correct when the item refers to a specific manifestation, but not for items which are about works or expressions. Currently (and perhaps forever?) Wikidata items are a mix of various levels. Federico Leva (BEIC) (talk) 12:24, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records

Was the data model/ontology ever checked against the FRBR model? I think someone at Wikidata:WikiProject Books did, but the outcome is not very definite yet.

As an example I'm working on Brown Sugar (Q21887964) (song: I'd say work, or expression if limited to a specific performance sung on a certain day) vs. Brown Sugar (Q991121) (manifestation with same name but various content) vs. Sticky Fingers (Q745850) (other manifestation). (Terms are just used for illustrative purpose here.)

Do some of the properties make sense only at some level and not others (for example "date")? Do some properties logically extend from one level to another (for example "author")? Federico Leva (BEIC) (talk) 16:23, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

tracklist (P658) vs. has part(s) (P527)

The current table seems to recommend tracklist (P658) over has part(s) (P527). See Property_talk:P658#P527. Federico Leva (BEIC) (talk) 18:28, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
