- If you look above you can see the example used when the property was proposed is a person. However it used for a nickname for this individual, not for generic nicknames for all members of an organisation ("Gooners" for supporters of Arsenal football club). Are you trying to say that Kristiaan Reuder was known as 'Leander' to the other members of Bentvueghels? If so then there are better properties than nickname. I suggest you use pseudonym (P742). - Actually, the nickname, once given was used also by others, not just members of the club. For some, their original names have been sadly forgotten. I guess it is a bit like nuns when they take on a new name when they put on a habit. A pseudonym in my mind is a name someone takes on when they are hiding something, not a name they are proud of. I was planning on getting started with this as well, but I would like to know what properties are preferred. Should we use Geri Horner (Q19845) as the example states? Or, should we use nickname (P1449) and add the Bentvlueghels nickname, but if we do that, how do we model the connection to the Bentvlueghels? Would love to hear what you think! - It's been awhile, but I just add the nickname as a qualifier for member of (P463). The membership is also used for other collectives, like guilds, but then I don't use a qualifier. Theoretically I suppose there are bentvueghel members with unknown nicknames, but generally the existance of a nickname causes art historians to assume bentvueghel membership, since there is no one publication (that I know of) that documents membership over the course of 150+ years. Internet nicknames edit
Is it the right property for Internet nicknames? If so, the mandatory "language" qualifier doesn't always make sense for this one. --eugrus (talk) 15:28, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Limitations of text field edit
The current property as a text field is more appropriate to a byname (Q279239) than to a nickname that is the short form of a given name, like Bob (Q18105736) for Robert (Q4927937). Perhaps we should consider a new property, or another way of dealing with this?--Pharos (talk) 15:55, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
